Intergalactic battles: Hidden Enemies

"Sir… I think we may be in a little more trouble than we think…”

“Oh really Jack? Please enlighten me. How can our situation get any worse than it is now?”

“The scanners are picking up life signatures. I don’t mean the kind Simon’s army might give us. I mean thousands upon thousands, heading this way.”

“That means nothing, Jack. If they’re not Simon’s army, we don’t need to worry about them. Are the turrets operational?”

“Well… we have one turret working.”

“So no then. We have nothing to defend ourselves with and we can’t get away either. We have only one choice. The faint hope that we’ll outsmart them.”

“Well sir, if it’s of any help, we have non-lethal weapons which can be used. The electro blasters and voiders may work.”

“Yes, we’re going to kill Simon’s army with nonlethals. Gather everyone. They should know what’s going down.”

Jack reluctantly got up from his seat and went to the PA service and called all of the crew to the command center. Soon enough, the Command Center was stuffed with people, just like a turkey is stuffed with stuffing.

“My crew… I have bad news. We have no weapons, and we can’t escape Simon,” he was interrupted by the groaning of people,

”But, I’m not gonna bother telling you that we’ll easily fight them off. I won’t give you that kind of a lie, coated with hope. I just checked, and all we have is nonlethal weapons. This isn’t a fight we can win with sheer power. We’re gonna have to use our brains rather than just our fingers. Then maybe, just maybe, we will outlive this. I don’t know what’ll happen out there. We don’t have a choice in the matter. So pick up your weapons and fight. Fight for your life” Nobody applauded after Ivan gave his speech. There was no hope felt amidst his crew. As the night grew old, their attitude grew stale. Ivan’s crew got on their feet. The next morning they had a fight to lose. As the sun was rising, the enemy attack commenced.

It started with a single shot. Then two, then a barrage of ammunition, followed by a salvo of missiles. Ivan jolted out of sleep.

“Sir! Sir, they’re here!”

“Yep. I figured that out, Jack.” Ivan sprang out of his bed.

“Hand me that screwdriver Jack!”

“Why?”

“So that I can put a metal conductor into the battery of the gun and-”

“Make the electrical output much more powerful! Here take it!”

Ivan finished his modification and headed out of his room to return enemy fire. He was greeted by the gruesome sight of dead bodies. A lot of his crew had died, and more still were dying. Ivan pulled out his gun and shot an enemy. The Electro blaster had almost roasted his chest, where Ivan shot him. Soon enough, a lot of other enemies fell to Ivan’s fire.

“Sir! If we can disable their database, their suits won’t be able to function properly!”

“Right. I presume that their “database” happens to be an almost inaccessible small place with lots of booby traps Alex?”

“Yes, sir… how did you know?”

“Forget about that. Let’s go! Cover me, guys!”

With that last sentence, the fire intensified. Ivan’s crew was rallying Simon’s army. Ivan noticed a small ditch and jumped into it with Alex. Through the sticky mud, they made their way towards Simon’s ship.

“It’s abandoned. How can that be? Why aren’t they using their turrets and where are the guards?”

“I don't know Alex. We have walked quite a while now… I think that their ship is too far away to accurately use the turrets."

“Perhaps. Well, if fortune favors us, who are we to complain?”

“You’re right. I guess I’m just being a little too paranoid. So shall we enter the ship then?”

“Let’s go, sir.” Then they went inside the ship.

It was more or less the same as Ivan’s. As Ivan took a step forward, a camera almost slammed into his face.

“Confirm identity!”

“Why you little piece of garbage!” Ivan flew into a rage and shot the camera to pieces, till it was just singed metal dangling from a rod. Then they kept going down the corridor until they came to the database area.

“Well, that was easy enough,”

“No. We are being tricked Alex. It’s never this easy.” From the darkness emerged nine robots, each with its own plasma minigun.

Ivan had no time to think. He fired a shot above his and Alex’s head. Suddenly, they were encompassed in a translucent red shield.

“What did you do sir?!”

“Sealed us in. Those guns would’ve torn us to pieces before you could reach out to retrieve your weapon.”

The fire continued to bounce harmlessly off the shield.

“We can’t stay here forever Ivan. We have to go. Alex pulled out his electro blaster and made a hole in the shield. Ivan and Alex quickly climbed out of the whole and behind a table. The plasma bullets were tearing through the table.

“Alex, stay behind me!” Ivan yelled as he fired at the robots. One robot at a time, Ivan managed to take down 8 enemies. Then, he felt something in his chest. He looked down to see a dagger… held by Alex.

“Alex… how could you do this to me?! How could you betray me?!”

“That’s because I’m not Alex at all." Simon pulled off a small device. His true face showed.

“Simon?! Where’s Alex?!”

“By now, probably halfway to hell.”

“Why would you do the-”

“Don’t talk to me about how I could do that. You’ve done far worse. You got in my head and did this to me!” Simon showed Ivan his scarred face, “You claim to be a hero, yet you stand for nothing! You left me to do on Cyclono after you took my parents from me. You showed me how pathetic it is to be a hero. You were my friend many years ago, and here you stand now. The only difference between us is that one of us didn’t lose everything!”

Ivan picked up his electro blaster with a grin on his face. “You think I wanted that? I didn’t leave you, Simon. You left me when you tried to kill me!” Ivan aimed the rifle at the computers and emptied all his charge.

“I’ll die Simon, but I’ll die knowing that all my friends won’t. Also, why did you tell me that if I destroyed your database your soldiers would be rendered useless?” Ivan was in a lot of pain from the dagger.

“I told you that so that my actions would at least seem convincing. I was going to kill you when we came to the camera, but I'll just do it now. ” Simon pulled the dagger out of Ivan. Ivan howled in pain, ready to meet his maker as Simon pointed a plasma gun at him. Suddenly, there was humming, followed by the noise of a metal wall breaking.

“Ivan, you’ve gotta get me one these A-22 suits man!” said a familiar voice.

Thanks for your feedback Tweezers! Which sentences did you have to rephrase if you don't mind me asking you?

Sorry, but I can't really remember which ones exactly  :(. They were quite minor though, just a couple of words out of place.

That is good to know then. I think I am improving from my first story, which was terrible in retrospect. Thanks for your help!
