As swiftly as he could, he swam back towards the land where he flopped the driver down on the ground. The man wasn't breathing. Panicking, Alex folded his fingers and dug the heels of his palm on the man's ribcage making sharp compressions. Alex was able to hold his breath for the entire time they were underwater- but the man wouldn't have been able to. Having been unconscious, the driver must have taken a lot of water into his lungs.

Alex carried on pushing- making sharp downward movements. Each time he pushed down, the man's chest rose up slightly before descending back down. But no sign that the man was actually alive. Alex couldn't help thinking how closely the man in front of him related to a lifeless corpse.

Still no movement...

Chapter 4: One More Time

Just when Alex was beginning to lose hope, the driver suddenly jerked forwards and violently threw up water making loud retching noises. With a sigh of relief, Alex staggered to his feet. The driver looked remarkably pale. But at least he was alive.

“I wasn't sure you'd make it. ” The sharp voice jolted Alex. He turned around to face who had spoken.

Towering above him was a man with cold, expressionless eyes. Alex instantly recognised him. The first passenger. The one who had left the car so promptly, leaving Alex to save the others. His cheekbones jutted out and his jawline looked menacing but despite these sharp features, one prominent feature stood out from the rest. His hair.

Alex was mesmerised. The man's hair was completely white and looked as if it had been woven out of threads of snow. It seemed to be a beacon of white light in the darkness. He hadn't noticed it underwater due to how abruptly the man had left.

“I'll carry him back to the road. That way I can get a car to stop. ” Ice Hair spoke calmly as he pointed to the driver. “You try and save the other two...especially the bigger man. Please, save the man. ”

Maybe it was the commanding tone of Ice Hair or the fact that Alex couldn't really see a better solution and so he reluctantly nodded. Without another word, the man grabbed the driver and lifted him up on to his feet. After a few wobbly seconds, the driver was finally able to stand up by himself. They turned around and headed towards the road.

Alex looked back at the lake. Why had he agreed to do this? He didn't have much of an option now though. It was his fault that they were all in this situation.

But why didn't Ice Hair help the others down there? And why on earth did he tell me to save the man instead of the boy?

There were so many questions rattling around in his head but the time to ask them were gone as he glimpsed Ice Hair's back in the distance. Besides, none of it would do the people trapped underwater any good.

With a sigh, Alex turned to face the lake. Without further ado, he dived back into the water. The recovery time to get used to the sudden drop in temperature was short this time and so the swim to the middle was relatively quick. He took a deep breath once more before diving underwater. It seemed to take a lot longer to reach the car. It wasn't long before the pressure made his ears pop. Alex continued- uncomfortable as he was with this new depth. By the time he reached the car, he found it resting at the bottom.

Alex didn't waste any time and swung in through the broken windscreen. Water had practically filled the entire vehicle except for maybe a couple of inches near the roof. Both the passengers were submerged. The well-built man- Alex named him Muscles- had a nasty gash on his forehead and seemed to be half-asleep; his eyelids half way down but his mouth tightly sealed. The boy looked unconscious.

Alex unclipped both seatbelts and grabbed them both by the arm at the same time. It was clear what he would have to do. He wouldn't have time to make another trip as the person that he would have to leave behind would most likely drown. He also couldn't leave the boy to die as Ice Hair had implied. Alex took a huge gulp up of the stale air, just before the remaining pocket of oxygen was replaced by water. He kicked away from the car.

Progress was significantly slower than last time. It was incredibly hard to try and swim up with only your legs while carrying two people. One of whom was more than double the size of him.

Time passed.

It seemed to take forever to get to the surface and the torch strapped on his head didn't seem to show any sign that he was even close to the top. As if on cue, the light flickered out. Apparently, the battery had decided to die right there and then. Nothing but darkness once more.

Alex's lungs were beginning to burn now. He couldn't hold his breath any longer. His arms and legs had started to tire and the build-up of lactic acid started to cause his muscles to ache. He just couldn't go on any longer. His brain was screaming at him. He had to open his mouth.

No. If I stop now I'll drown and these people will drown. Keep going.

But Alex's body started to betray him. His kicks were becoming weak and he started to thrash his legs wildly. The people he was carrying seemed to get heavier and heavier and his body was only getting weaker. He needed air. But he refused to open his mouth. His eyelids started to drop. Unlike before the crash however, it wasn't because of fatigue. He was going to pass out from the lack of oxygen. His muscles weren't coping and now his brain was being cut off. His lungs felt like they were about to burst.

But then he broke through the surface of the water.

Alex took the deepest breath he had ever taken in his entire life. The sweet oxygen was welcomed by his burning lungs. He didn't realise how hard he was panting until his jaw hinge started throbbing. As if no matter how much air he gulped in, his lungs didn't have enough. The much-needed oxygen was rapidly pumped around his body immediately bringing relief to his limbs. Eventually, the pain from his muscles and lungs started to subside. Then Alex remembered the two people he was carrying.

By the time he reached solid land, he slumped to the ground unable to hold himself up. Slowly, he got back up. The man he named Muscles was awake. Alex didn't know how but the huge man must have been able to hold his breath while they were underwater. But he was struggling to move so it seemed as if he was still suffering from the crash.

Alex turned his attention to the unconscious boy instead. He started pressing down on his chest with as much energy as he could muster. It took a lot longer than the driver but finally, the boy started gagging and retching before a cascade of water seemed to gush out of his mouth. The boy continued spluttering for a good minute or two until he finally slumped back down to return to his half-awake state. At least he was breathing this time.

As if on cue once more, Ice Hair appeared out of the fog.

“You've saved their lives. The driver is on the road. He's a lot better.” Ice Hair glanced at the boy. Alex couldn't tell if he imagined the flicker of annoyance across his face as he did so. Alex quickly checked again but Ice Hair had returned back to his neutral expression. “Let's take these two back. ”

Without waiting for Alex to reply, Ice Hair grabbed Muscles and lifted him on to his shoulders like a sack of rice. Alex could only gape at the man's strength. He certainly didn't look he could carry a man three times his own weight...effortlessly at that.

Inevitably, now that he was out of the water, Alex started shivering. He was feeling the effects of his time in the freezing lake. Drained he tried to get up, but his legs felt like they were going to give up and buckle under him.

No, I need to move. I can't die out here.

Alex yanked the boy to his feet a little too aggressively. Though it looked like the boy wasn't aware of what was happening, he seemed to sense what Alex wanted and started dragging his feet forwards- still half asleep. Together they slowly trudged their way back to the road, leaning on each other for support.

...And that's it for Chapter 4! Stay tuned! ^_^
