[Guide] Tank Positions & Structures

 Share

Recommended Posts

This guide contains knowledge that is useful for making more special and creative parkour tricks, as well as building stuff out of tanks. The main focus is on different ways of positioning a single tank. In the end of the guide there are just a few basic structures you can build out of tanks, I don't list more of them because I want you to use the knowledge you'll acquire from this guide to come up with more structures on your own. Keep in mind that coming up with ideas is the easy part, building them is going to be harder.

This guide is not about space mode, these positions and structures are possible in space too but some work differently there.

The jumper here is a flipped sliding tank:

Flipped upside down

Everybody know what flipped tanks can't do, but not everyone knows that they can slide easily, especially when they are on top of other tanks. Tanks that stand on their tracks have a lot more friction with what they stand on, but it's not because the tracks have higher friction, a flipped tank will still slide easily on top of another flipped tank even though he touches his tracks.

Flipped tanks can move a little by shooting with recoil turrets. It's a tiny movement but sometimes it is useful for dropping off an edge or hitting a mine.

Flipped sideways

The easiest way to flip a tank on his side is by getting him on top of a tall tank and then letting him drop off the edge to the side. You might want to have another tank standing ready to hold the tank that tries to flip on his side and prevent him from flipping upside down.

Sideways tanks slide even more easily than flipped tanks.

NACIYAW.jpg

Stuck with the tracks in the air

If a tank stands on something but his tracks are both in the air, he won't be able to drive and he will slide as easily as flipped tanks do.

It is possible to get tanks stuck like this on top of other tanks too, for example if a Dictator is perfectly centered on top of a Wasp, or almost any tank on top of a sideways tank.

Leaning

To lean against a straight wall, drive against it and shoot at it with a strong recoil turret, using nitro or having a tank pushing you from behind can help. You can also hit mines when driving towards the wall to lift your front. To lean on a cliff, depending on your equipment, you can either use the same method as for leaning on walls or simply run fast into the cliff. Alternatively you can drive against the cliff at a sharp angle and turn towards the cliff, or slowly drop down from the top of the cliff.

If you lean on something you will most likely need to keep driving to not fall down, which requires fast acceleration that most M0 hulls don't have.

Some people call leaning tanks a ramp, so if someone tells you "make a ramp on/to this house" he wants you to lean on the house, even if it won't make a ramp that is high enough to get on top of the house.

Handstand

This position has 3 variations, they all look pretty much the same but each variation has slightly different properties.

Variation 1:

A tank in handstand leaning against a wall. This is the simplest and least special one, you can get a tank into handstand by pushing him from behind while he is leaning on a wall, another tank in handstand, or any other solid object that is high enough.

If you unintentionally got someone into handstand when you want him to be just leaning on a wall, you can get him back into leaning position by gently pushing the side of his tank.

Variation 2:

A tank in handstand on top of another tank. This position is a little less stable: the tank in handstand slides very slowly until he falls off the tank that he stand on. The sliding is very slow and will mostly take a few minutes to make the tank in handstand fall off, but it can be accelerated by putting more weight on top of the tank and by having the handstand tank use a lighter hull compared to the tanks on top of him. Pushing the tank in handstand will easily make him slide or flip.

The easiest way to get into handstand is to dip down between 2 tanks that lean on another tank from both sides, so that they will hold you for a few seconds to make sure you will stay in handstand and won't flip. A little harder but still easy way is to stand on top of a tank that swings on the edge of a ramp, and drive forward (and optionally shoot) when the tank under you drives forward.

Variation 3:

A tank in handstand stuck between the edges of two close objects. To get into this position, use the method I described for the second variation, but instead of doing it on top of a tank do it over a narrow gap between two objects. This variation of handstand is more stable - you won't slide out of the gap unless someone pushes you from the side, and a small push from the front/back won't make you fall.

Note: Hulls other than Wasp may have the wrong size to fit in.

Leaning on the garage which is slightly higher than the cliff, so it keeps the wheelies stable:

EGsry9p.jpg

Wheelie

When a tank is standing almost in handstand (at around 80 degrees from the ground), he can stay somewhat stable in this position, but only if he does something to not lose balance. Despite the weird looking and unbalanced rotation, tanks in wheelie can carry unlimited weight without falling. The only hulls that can be stable in wheelie are Wasp, Hunter and Dictator.

Ways to stay stable in wheelie:

  • Shoot up with a recoil turret - Twins, Vulcan and Ricochet are the best but some other turrets can work as well. Don't drive while in wheelie, otherwise you may lose your balance.
  • Lean against a little object that will hold you from falling, and drive forward non stop. You can see an example of it in the spoiler on the left, a line of tanks in wheelie leaning on the roof of a garage which is just slightly higher than the ground.
  • Have a tank standing on top of the tank in wheelie, dipping down a little and shooting with a recoil turret (Twins and Ricochet are best for it).
  • Push the tank(s) in wheelie against a wall from the side, the friction will keep them in place and stop them from falling. The tanks in wheelie must not drive, otherwise they will fall quickly. This method is less stable and the wheelies are likely to fall after a short time. The time can range between a few seconds and several minutes depending on the number of wheelies and how strong they are pushed. If a tank in wheelie shoots up it will help get him steeper and delay the fall.

How to control your motion in wheelie:

  • To slide back slowly, shoot up and don't drive at all.
  • To turn your hull to the side, shoot up and slightly towards the direction you want to turn to. The more sideways you shoot, the faster you will turn.
  • To go forward, drive forward with short clicks and be careful not to drive too much at once to not lose your balance. Some equipment combinations will enable you to drive forward non stop fast without stopping and without losing balance, the best equipment for it is Dictator and Smoky.
  • Other tanks can push the tank in wheelie to make him slide sideways or forward.

Setting up:

LOcIyYP.png

ODBvOaM.png

Static wheelie

When a tank in wheelie has a wall or a tank behind him, it will hold him from falling. To set it up you need to stand on top of a tank (preferably a tall one, but no necessary) close to a wall/tank and then lean down towards it and get steep enough for wheelie. The tank under you can help you get steep enough by pushing you against the wall, then he needs to slowly drive away while making sure you don't fall down.

With a wall it is not very stable, the tank will lose steepness slowly but surely until he falls. Driving down helps losing steepness slower, and shooting up with a recoil turret helps getting steeper so you can stay in wheelie as long as you shoot frequently enough, but be careful not to get too steep.

With a tank behind the wheelie it is more stable, the tank in wheelie doesn't need to drive and he will never fall if you set him up properly.

Stuck between edges

When a tank gets stuck between any 2 things that are just barely close enough to each other to stop the tank from falling between them, the tank stays there and behaves in a special way:

  • He can't drive.
  • He can slide easily to the side along the things that hold him.
  • If pushed against the things that hold him (he can push himself by shooting with a recoil turret), the tank will swing back and forth for a few seconds.

You may have noticed that the third variation of handstand position is exactly a tank stuck between edges.

A hanging tank next to tank standing on the ground and a gold box, view from under the ground:

IIZEywy.jpg

Hanging in the ground

Tanki maps are made mostly of flat squares with a texture on one side and invisible on the other side. Tanks can go through the invisible side of the walls/ground. If they go too deep through it kills them, but if they go just deep enough they get stuck in it and can't go back but don't die, then they still can keep going deeper (which will kill them).

To hang in the ground, stand near the edge where you have access to the invisible side of the ground (when it's not blocked by a wall under the edge), slowly drop down with the front of your tank going under the edge while the back stays up, once your hull turned a little more than 90 degrees - shoot with magnum at 70-90 degrees (experiment with a few different angles to see what works best for your equipment). The shot will push you through and you'll get stuck in the ground with most of your tank hanging down from it and only the edge of your hull above the ground.

Having a tank standing on top of your turret when you drop down is going to make it easier to get into the ground because the splash from shooting him will give you a stronger push. It is also possible to get into the ground with other turrets using a similar method with a tank on top of you that shoots to push you into the ground using his hull.

Hanging tanks slide very easily when pushed and can take a few seconds to stop, they can also push themselves by shooting with Magnum at 90 degrees.

You need to be careful when moving around when you're hanging in the ground, if someone pushes you too much you might go up through the ground and die.

If you shoot down with a strong recoil turret, it will push you up through the ground. You can see an example of how it can be used in a parkour trick in this video.

Setting it up:

JpaDXq7.jpg

Standing on the side of a cliff

Viking and Hornet seem to be the most stable in this position. To get into this position you need a not too small tank leaning on a cliff to help holding you from below. Stand on top of the cliff, dip down to stand with your edge on the edge of the other tank, then start driving up the cliff and don't stop. The tank under you needs to slowly get lower and lower until you are no longer touching him, then he can move away. You have to keep driving up all the time unless you want to fall down.

This position is not very stable, some hulls can stay in it longer than others but you can't avoid falling eventually. However, doing it on a round cliff is more stable and doesn't require a helper to set up.

You can see an example of the setup as well as a trick that uses this setup in this video.

gOoIlcM.jpg

Flipped on the side of a cliff

To get a tank stuck on a cliff like that, get him flipped on top of the cliff and have a tank leaning on that cliff from below. The flipped tank needs to shoot himself off the cliff or get pushed off slowly by another tank, once he gets to the edge he will rotate in a way that the edge of his tank will be on the edge of the tank that leans on the cliff, then the leaning tank needs to slowly go down.

The tank will remain stable on the cliff only for a short time (ranging between a few seconds and a few minutes, depending on how well you set him up and what hull he uses), then he will rotate a little and start sliding down slowly but surely.

Tower

Just a bunch of tanks stacked on top of each other. The easiest way to build a tower is to drive onto the other tanks from higher ground. If the environment doesn't allow you to do that or the tower you build is taller than any object you can get on, make a line of tanks leaning on each other and when everyone is ready each tank should drive onto the tank he leans on, this must be done in sequence from top to bottom.

It's mostly used for building a tower as tall as the building you want to get on, so the top tank can just drive from the tower of tanks onto the roof of a house. Such towers can be used for more advanced stuff if the tanks that make up the tower do something more than just standing there. This structure is also very useful for building other structures when you need to place tanks high up on top of other tanks.

Taxi with a passenger on it:l0CO6eA.jpg

A Hammer elevator setup using taxi:

Q8EoERI.jpg

Taxi

Two tanks leaning on each other in wheelie to keep each other from falling. These tanks can support a limited amount of weight from above - put something too fat on it and it'll collapse. Both tanks need to keep driving to stay stable in their place, if both tanks stop driving then the taxi will fall apart. If only one tank stops driving, the taxi will slowly slide in the direction of the tank that stopped driving. If one or both tanks shoot to the side it will make the taxi turn, but at a high risk of ruining the alignment of the wheelies and breaking the taxi.

To build a taxi you need 2 dictators that lean on both sides of another dictator - standing in front of each other and driving up to get in wheelie against the dictator they lean on. Once both tanks are in wheelie in front of each other, the dictator between them should leave the battle, the dictators must keep driving forward all the time until they lean on each other. (and then keep driving unless you want to move or break the taxi)

LUKfpTA.png

Bridge

You can build all kinds of different bridges and use them for lots of different parkour tricks, but the main function of bridges is just to let tanks drive on them, so it is a mostly decorative structure. I won't get into the details of what kinds of bridges you can build and how, there are too many possibilities to cover them all here, and it's more fun if you get more stuff to come up with yourself :)

Awsome! I should try one of these later on when I get better than I am now.

You need to try stuff to get better at it, not the opposite lol

how to read this whole? -_-

You don't need to read the whole thing ._.

Just look at the pictures and titles to see if there's something you didn't know, no point in reading about things you already know.

I couldn't understand how to get the Variation 2 of Handstand and the Static Wheelie. Any help?

For the second variation of handstand: choose a tank that you want to make handstand on top of him, let's call him Tank A, this tank will just stand in place and do nothing. Then get 2 helper tanks to help setting up the handstand, these tanks need to lean on Tank A from opposite sides - one helper leaning on the front of Tank A and one helper leaning on the back of Tank A. Get on top of one of the helper tanks, go to the space between the helper tanks on top of Tank A and dip down in such a way that you will touch Tank A with the front or back of your tank while the other side of your tank is still on one of the helper tanks. At this point both helper tanks need to push you to make your tank rotate and stand vertically on top of Tank A, once you are in handstand they can both stop pushing and drive away.

For the static wheelie: this screenshot shows where the helper tank (the one at the bottom) needs to stand. The tank on top of him is the one getting into static wheelie, he needs to start on top of the tank and swing his hull while dropping down into the space between the helper tank and the wall. Then the helper tank needs to push just enough to make sure the other tank is touching the wall behind him and is steep enough but not too steep (the screenshot shows how steep exactly he needs to be), then just stand there for a second to make sure the tank in wheelie doesn't drop down slowly when he's not being pushed, if he doesn't drop down then the helper can drive away.

Thanks for explaining, though it is a bit tricky to get the tank to stand on both of the helper tanks.

Also, how do you discover game mechanics like static wheelie? :P

You don't need to be in handstand on top of the helper tanks, you need to be between them with the edge of your tank on top of one of them so he can push you to get you steeper.

A lot of these are just discoveries that happened by accident.

I would say almost all mechanics are found by messing around in parkour, as are tricks; that's why when I parkour(ed) with my club, the first 10-20 minutes are dedicated to fooling around to see if anyone finds something by accident.
