The Infinity Above Us The sky spreads above me, a vast panorama, seeming ever-so tangible. Stars freckle the sky, proof that we are not alone on earth. In just under a couple minutes I will be up in the sky, an amazing revelation. Finally the radio sputters to life, a voice echoing throughout the spaceship, seeming to breathe life into all six of us drowsy spacemen. The voice, while cracking, says clearly, "1 minute until takeoff... Repeat, 1 minute until takeoff! All set?" One of the spacemen reply confidently, "All set!" The night sky now no longer seems loving, but menacing. "Contain yourself" I whisper, in attempt to soothe myself. What could go wrong? We are only going to be flying at approximately 15, 600 m/ph in the boundless behemoth of space! It can't be too bad... I take that back, it is hopeless! What all the people say about the stars in space, supposedly radiating light, hope -- Not true at all. Lies. The stars are merely barren rocks in the distance, a horrifying metaphor of what we could end up being. Finally, the radio, once again, speaks. "10 seconds to blast off... 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... BLAST OFF!" I cringe as we jet upward, my stomach feeling a peculiar gut-wrenching feeling. I feel like the life is being sucked out of me as we shoot upward. Minutes pass while I scream in agony, the echoes only reverberating through my spacesuit. I gradually adjust, as I feel a sudden weightlessness, a feeling that I have conquered the world, done the impossible. It is the satisfying feeling of floating. I quickly buckle myself into my seat, and brace myself for whatever surprises the stars decide to give us. Minutes pass. Hours. Everything seems in place, all of my fears, all of the anticipation, even the excruciating pain, all worth it to have this one moment of perfect peace. I smile, slowly allowing the sleep to cradle me. Time passes. I awake with a jolt. Something hit the spaceship. The side of the ship is being mercilessly battered by stone, as the metal caves in. A fellow spaceman yells into the radio: "Houston, we have a problem!" I unbuckle myself and slowly (not understanding all at stake) make my way over to the gash in the side of the spaceship. It is similar to the colossal vortexes in movies, sucking out everything near into space. One spaceman lays suspended in the air, only supported by one hand gripping the edge of the spaceship. I outstretch my arm, and grip his hand as he nearly falls, almost swept into oblivion. His eyes plead me to find some remnant of strength, to gather some adrenaline and save this helpless man. Suddenly, with one strong gust both of us are swept away, until the rocket ship is only a dot in the distance. I float helplessly through space, only stopping to look back at the man I tried to save, eyes glazed over, face contorted in pain. I was not going to end up like him, that was not going to be my horrible fate. -

A Hope for Escape As I walk home, gales of wind lash at my face like a ceaseless whip. On top of that, I feel a sort of sensation telling me I am being watched. I swivel my head, only to stop and gaze in front of me, everything sparkling a conspicuous shade of red, from the intensity of the crimson sunset. I feel bad leaving the majestic sunset behind, a picturesque moment. I continue walking along the remote, empty streets. To be honest, it’s unnerving to walk along the streets at this time, shadows constantly bouncing around. As I continue walking, I look to my right, and only get a quick glance at a hooded figure, covered in black, clothes immaculate. I am only given ample time for fear to take shape within myself. I open my mouth to scream, only to find a cloth being raised against my face. For a fleeting moment I feel as if there is no effect, and adrenaline urges me inflict pain towards my attacker. I kick him and he doubles down, but then I feel everything fading, becoming increasingly blurry. I slump to the ground. ___________________ I hear voices, hushed voices speaking to each other. I slowly open my eyes, and a wave of grogginess washes over me. I look around the room I am being incarcerated in, to find nothing other than a toilet and a table, the rooms meticulously clean, walls painted a vibrant shade of yellow. All the memories of the previous night is a haze within my mind. As if I was a feeble old man, I arise from the cot I am held in, and move to the front of the “cell” in an attempt to hear the voices more clearly. The voices are like an old radio, too distant, and only providing snippets of conversation, “Jimmy cannot… could use floor… to get out.” Another voice, “Ransom… thousands… he cannot escape” After that, the voices raise to a crescendo, and an argument arises. What did they mean, talking about my escape, as if it was a tangible possibility? I am locked in a “prison”, and there is no apparent way to escape. ___________________ Days pass, days of hope for escape, until finally I set my eyes on my only chance out. I spot a loosened tile on the floor, that I could lift and go where it leads me to. Face caked in a mixture of concrete and sweat, I finally manage to pry open the tile. Beneath me is what seems to be an office, but abandoned, all items in it dilapidated. I open the only door in the office, creaking as it slowly inches open. Outside is somewhat of a yard, the sun shining above, while birds chirp harmoniously. The only thing separating me from escape is a small fence erected carelessly. I run, laughing in glee, pride swelling within myself. Suddenly, I hear a gunshot, followed by immense pain. I fall to the ground, paralysed by the pain.
