Angel Of Death.... A raven circled the night sky above me. Ever so often, its black eyes gazed down below at the vacant road and then back to my cold gray eyes. A long time ago, my mother once told me that blackbirds are the reminders of the lost souls. They soar the heights of heaven to view the life they used to have and are in search for a new one to take away. Back then I thought it was just a silly fable to scare me away from the woods. Now, I know that it's the truth. I reached for my gold pocket watch and right on cue, the blackbird flew down to my shoulder. I glanced at the raven and imagined its beak formed into a grin as it looked down at the watch ticking towards death. As the minute hand reached thirty, a car's headlights came into view breaking the darkness as promised. With a subtle nod of my head, the raven soared into the dark sky. I closed my watch, placed it back inside my black coat and heard a rustling noise from behind. I turned around and saw a fawn hiding behind a weeping willow. I already knew the events that were going to unravel before me, but it still amazed me how precise everything always went. The car rounded the corner and the raven was poised at ready, eagerly waiting for the few seconds to pass. The raven glided down to the white car and landed right on the windshield as instructed. The driver abruptly stopped the car and profanity escaped her soft lips. After the few failed attempts of whisking the bird off her car, she continued to drive not caring about the obnoxious bird that was tilting its head while it stared at her through the window. She was in a hurry and I knew why. Her soon-to-be fiancé had a romantic dinner planned were he was ready to take her hand in marriage. She was clueless to the proposal and only anxiety filled her stomach while she drove back home. The thought of seeing her lover quickly vanished from her mind when the sound of wings flapping against the windshield consumed her ears. The raven flew off her window only to reveal a frightened fawn crossing the road. Her instincts were fast, but not fast enough. The car swiveled by the sudden maneuver and then tumbled upside down by the force due to the spinning. The sight before me would cause tears in anyone's eyes, but my own. She groaned softly as she tried to escape this deadly accident. "Sir, help me," she cried while squinting her eyes to get a better look of me through the shattered window. The raven flew to the ground and walked over to her side before I had the chance to do it myself. Catching sight of the appalling bird caused her to whimper out of fear and hatred. "Please help me," she begged. The raven flew back up to my shoulder as I knelt down to take a look at her. Her pleading green eyes were going in and out of consciousness as I examined the state she was in. Blood trailed down her auburn hair, causing it to stick to her pale face; her strength was weakened from the crash making it difficult for her to retrieve herself from the prying hands of the car. "What's your name?" I asked. I already knew her name, it was Jessica, but I had to make sure. "Jessica," she replied weakly as if life was already drained from her. I sighed and extended my hand to her heart, letting my fingers brush her skin. With just one touch, her heart stopped beating, her lungs shriveled up and her soul became mine to collect. This is the task I am designed to do, no matter how hard I tried to fight against it. For years, I was cursed with this power and it will stay that way for eternity.... To Be Continued......
