Guys, I'm leaving this clan (and the game). (and pls, I'm not gonna just leave and rejoin a month later :P) School and extracurriculars are becoming more of a concern, especially since I'm in high school, and my free time is diminishing. Unfortunately, an online game is not very high on my list of priorities, especially as tanki is not the most engaging game, and Dossy appears to have died. I'll probably still play or post once in a while, but I doubt I'll be able to remain an active member of the clan. Ok, so I have 5 apples and 3 oranges. There is a 5/8 chance that I ate an apple and a 3/8 change that I ate an orange. Then I bought 5 apples and 3 oranges again. At this point, the probability of having 10 apples and 5 oranges is 1/2 and the probability of having 9 apples and 6 oranges is 1/2. Idk if you did anything wrong in the middle, and I'm too lazy to check so I'll just tell you you're definitely wrong on your final answer - since there are two pairs of solutions, (a = (3+sqrt(17))/2, b = (-3+sqrt(17))/2) and (a = (3-sqrt(17))/2, b = (-3-sqrt(17))/2) (I used square roots for a more exact answer), you plug each PAIR into a^2 + b^2 to get TWO solutions. I think what you did was substitute each possibility of a and b, regardless of whether they fill the requirements together. If we square each number, however, we find that (3+sqrt(17))^2 = (-3-sqrt(17))^2 and (-3+sqrt(17))^2 = (3-sqrt(17))^2. So there's only one answer for x: 13. Edit: I found why. (a-b )^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab, and since we know a-b and ab we get 3^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 4 9 + 4 = a^2 + b^2 a^2 + b^2 = 13. (God, I just did a whole bunch of work on the quadratics for nothing, didn't I?)
