I just want to be on record that I think the 10 minute battle stinks. Hopefully you will reconsider.

Just so I understand, since I did not make my 200 kills during this last phase, there is no point in me or anyone else who hasn't achieved this mark to contribute to the battle phase. Is that right? Sit it out, wait for Turn 2 and try again?

200 kills in 24 hrs. for occasional players could be aggressive. Shouldn't take more than a few hours to get at least 1 turn for most casual players. I don't have that kind of time most days. Still going to have fun with it. Hardcore players are going to do very well for prize and country.
