Hello, I am Test_The_Guy. :)
I am a long time player of TO, and I want this to be read so people can understand how I feel about the game and I want other people to share their thoughts and feelings about how the game has evolved and changed over the years though there are already discussions about this topic. I'm probably going to get a lot of TL:DR, but please read.
So I played TO since May of 2014. I made several accounts, and I have played them for a decent amount of time. (tankdetroyer_3000, fernozzle, Starsdust, Budda_ON) I remember starting out the game and enjoying it very much. I remember staying up way past my bedtime because I wanted to grind crystals for M1 Twins and M1 Thunder on tankdetroyer_3000. It was a lot of fun playing in those times. I found solace in TO because it was the game I enjoyed the most out of any other game when I was going through a lot of pressure of high expectations from my parents and everyone around me. I feel like these were the best times for TO when there was crystal boxes, gold boxes that were of value, the freedom to make a battle with your own parameters and objective that must be achieved, etc. I had fun playing not because I was fairly new to the game, but because it was an extremely simple game. You could simply just pick a battle from a list and join it. Also, there were maps like Madness or Moon Silence I played on the most because Madness was truly madness and Moon Silence was extremely fun because of the gravity.
But then I got scammed on tankdetroyer_3000. I was a very naive kid, and someone of the name of ExplosiveHurricane said that they could get crystals for me. I said yes and gave him access to my account. He changed the password and I was locked out of the account. I hated how I was such a fool to give up an account like that, but I decided to play on Budda_ON in 2015. I still enjoyed the game even though I had to start everything again. I remember new turrets being added, daily missions, and the game seemed to get better and better. "Hammer and Vulcan being added?! COOOOOL!!" I thought to my self. I thought at this rate, TO will get a lot of people playing and it will never die.
But then some changes happened that seemed to really dull out the game. I remember crystal boxes being removed, and I hated this change. Yes, battle funds grew, but I hated the fact that totally useless players, like me, could not get crystals because I was simply too weak to get a high enough score on a game mode and did not have strong equipment. Crystal boxes were an easy way for new players to get money, as well as people who really need it for their reasons, but are too weak for their battle. It made battles more fun because of how people fought over them in battles. Yes, it distracted from the main objective and some kid could just sit there and do nothing getting crystal boxes, but it benefits all players in terms of crystal count. I remember drop zones were really nice additions to the game because people know where to get an advantage like more damage. Then premium accounts were added and new kits were added to the game. I really didn't mind that much, but it was somewhat annoying playing with someone who was completely decked out in supplies and had superior equipment, being someone who barely had anything. Premium accounts were another thing, the paint protection it used to offer was so overpowered, and remember people like Arabiannoble ranting about this. I still enjoyed the game though because there was still its simplicity. But then I felt the game got stale with the balance changes to the parameters in the hulls. It pretty much made Viking, Light Hulls, and Titan the only popular hulls being played, and I have never seen a Dictator or a Hunter in the times the balance changes took place. Alterations also were a thing, and I thought it made the game a lot more fun because it changes how you play a turret, which I liked.
Later, I quit and decided that I was too addicted to the game. This was after containers were added and matchmaking was in the making. I thought that getting random paints and XT equipment was really cool, along with animated paints, but I thought that adding supplies and crystals make it a bit unbalanced. Some person who would get more resources from the containers could overpower those who do not have resources from them. Also, some people are very busy and don't have time to grind missions for containers, so they could be put behind because they won't get the potential resources from the containers. I also remember gold boxes dropped a lot faster when it was announced that it was dropping, so gold boxes became something rather worthless, and they never changed the value of gold boxes for any event. I later came back to the game to see that there were new game modes added into the game, but matchmaking was a thing. I felt like out of all the things I lost like gold boxes or the challenge of getting crystals, matchmaking really hit me hard when it comes to my enjoyment of the game.
Many players were invested in making a battle with their own parameters, and the many maps to choose from. Many people felt like they had lost in the maps they have invested so much time original Polygon or Madness. I will explain this feeling, and it is Loss Aversion. This refers to the theory that losing feels twice as bad as winning something feels good. For example, would you win 5 dollars or not lose 5 dollars? Most people would choose to win 5 dollars.
How does Loss Aversion apply to TO? This applies to Tanki because people invested so much into making their own battle. They lost their freedom to make a battle for free without a pro battle pass. They have also invested in maps like Madness, Polygon, and Sandbox because they have changed, and some people do not want to old sandbox map to be gone. It's still in the game, but you need a pro battle pass to be able to make a game with it. Also, TO uses this concept a lot with events and such. When was the last time you have heard that there would be 2x battle fund in pro battles? Never, they have all been in matchmaking. Some people don't like playing in matchmaking, and it feels like a wasted opportunity and investment if you are not going to play on matchmaking. This is a way to get people to play on matchmaking, but why not give people the freedom to make their own battle with these events? Also, I feel like I really lost the fun playing in different maps. Never have I ever played Dusseldorf in matchmaking or Madness in matchmaking. It feels really stale, despite battles being short. Many people asked why couldn't they just make a new map like the revamped Sandbox and keep the old Sandbox and put them in matchmaking? Also, remember when paints got reworked to where you can choose your own protections? I liked this because I never bought paints, but many old players feel like they have lost big because they invested so much into buying a different module or paint for specific protection. It would have been better if it was in the game the first place, not when everyone had already brought most of the modules. That is another example of Loss Aversion. Overdrives were added to give hulls more uniqueness and variety, but this made the game less simple, which I felt is another loss, even though they are really fun to use.
Overall, I felt like I have lost a lot as the game changed. I felt like I have lost the freedom to play whatever battle I wanted, the fun of getting gold boxes and crystal boxes, the challenge of getting crystals due to containers giving a ton of them, the maps I get to play on, though I got a lot in return like Overdrive. I really hope that Tanki Team sees this discussion and I hope for many other players alike will too. I want old players who played with the old graphics to give their thoughts about my opinions and the tanki team to respond however they want. I want new players to give opinions as well. I want containers to stop giving crystals and supplies, I want old maps back like Crash, Gallery, Legacy, and other maps from the test server 6 years ago testing new props. I want the freedom to make your own battles without the battle pass back again. I want gold boxes to be worth of value. I want fewer kits in the game. I want crystal boxes to be back in the game for players who are weak. I wish that Tanki would be as simple as it used to be...
I'm sort of fine with all of these changes. I might get some backlash because I expressed my thoughts about the game, but that's ok. What do you guys think of Tanki, and your time playing it?
Maps like these would be fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeBBnF2Qs_U&t=40s
