Continue playing and saving crystals for an augment in parallel. It'd be better to have Mk4. You should aim to buy an augment at the highest sale possible to get it at it's cheapest. Preferably at 50% sales or any higher or similar personal sale if you get (i dunno if we get these anymore). Another reason to get better Mk is because you'll be fighting Mk7's by the time you reach Lieutenant. So higher the better. I'd suggest to start with Railgun.

Use HPAS, SR or Stock. I've been using stock Smoky and have been smoldering people even 7-8 ranks above me. I really like the idea of HPAS. Increased damage for a pay in reload. It hits hard. Very hard and is great. I didn't get to use it much but when I used it in test server my scores were better with it than stock Smoky. If you're a mid-fielder like me who makes sure to finish the tank then go with HPAS. There will be times when you feel that having a faster reload would be better, welp, that's one drawback. But the 2k crit you get is totally worth it.
