Story [Issue 77] The City of Peace
Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in [Issue 77] The City of Peace Newspaper Archive
1st place winner of the Story category! The City of Peace The white, snow-capped mountains stand majestically before the towering green Royal Palace, their shadows cast over the island. Behind the mountains, the sun rises on the horizon. There are people climbing the mountains. One reaches the top of a particularly difficult mountain, before falling to his death. I briefly see silver, brilliantly reflecting the sun's light. His screams echo through the island. I see another person, holding a dagger, atop the same mountain. His - or her, I cannot discern, laughter drains the echoes of the dead man's screams. A river flows through the mountains and encircles the palace, before flowing through the farmlands in the residential sectors. It turns just before the army’s barracks, and slowly finds its way to the industrial areas. It turns left one last time and meets the sea. The Peace Scientific Research Institute is built atop the river water, just by the raging sea, and acts as a dam that powers the city. It’s a timeless scene. I don’t want to leave. I wish I had a camera. Or the time to take a picture. I see people living happily and peacefully across the city. The name of the city, Peace, is still ironic, because it’s not as peaceful as it may appear from an ancient fortress designed for war, situated at the banks of the river when it’s furthest from my home in the palace. Corruption is ingrained in the lives of the people. Crime hides in and operates from the most ridiculous and devious of places (that is, to the people). Think a shop that looks bigger than it is, not because the unseen sections are for goods production or processing, but because said unseen sections contain the impossibly lavish and secure house of the city’s greatest thief. I raided it two months ago, only to be accused of being an accomplice in crime. By, of course, my own sister. Still, surely there must be a reason why the people haven’t already dethroned the king and queen by now, if they can’t keep peace. After all, the balcony of the king’s room faces the entire city, and it’s hard to believe how easy it can be to assassinate him from the rooftop of just about any building of the city. But let alone assassination, for a millennium the people have not rioted. Ever since the City of War was destroyed, Peace has avoided even the tiniest possibility of war. Peace fears war, and for good reason. It is better to let the War Palace decay. I see a child running amok, dangerously close to the river just off Research. A man and woman running after him. Scared, and hoping the child survives unscathed, I silently begin to pray. But it is cut short. I hear sounds that force me to turn around. They’re coming. This place is patrolled by hundreds of robots, walking and killing intruders for three millennia. No human has entered this place for eleven hundred years. Its deteriorated, decaying black and white walls show its age. I’m not supposed to, but I can see the ground floor from here. It’s stained with the blood and powdered bones of countless humans that have made the mistake of entering this place in the last eleven centuries. The building never cleans it. Its robots let it decay, and barely keep the entire fortress from falling apart. I hear the creaks of the robots’ mechanisms. They’re three millennia old, and in that time they have been repaired only seven times. The last time was eleven centuries ago. But that doesn’t mean they’re weak or incapable of fighting. If they find me, this room will be littered with my bones, and bathed in my blood. The stains will remain till the time war breaks out again. Fear envelops me. I will have to jump. I will have to abandon all the valuable information I can get from the computers and databases in this room. All the history of the ancient civilization of Time, gone. The information I needed about the conspiracy, gone. And if I jump, I’ll die. I’ll die either way. A robot enters the room. I merely see a titanium skin, and it scares me to death. I refuse to look at this monster any more. Or maybe it's only a monster because of my precarious situation? I notice a body lying on a chair nearby. Dead. The blood is fresh. She died because it was her blade that killed her. And then she sparked a revolt. I might have forgiven, if it was only the former. Or was it the robots? I turn to the balcony and the city beyond. I take in the view one last time. A voice stops me. What will the people do when you're dead? Surely I can survive? A force compels me to jump. I resist. I refuse to jump. I will not be a tool in their machinations. I will die gruesomely and my corpse will rot, but I will not live to help the conspirators. I will not do what they say. I will not live to cause chaos. The city is the last thing I see before I jump. The last thing I hear is a shrill, metallic voice. “Intruder found. Intruder found. Intruder committed suicide. Threat nullified. Threat nullified. Return to patrol.” And then the child's screams. Splashes of water. Then silence. Then screams. Then, "The King is dead!" Little do they know. @thethiefofvictory -
Story [Issue 78] Pencils
Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in [Issue 78] Pencils Newspaper Archive
Pencils “She’s asleep!” “Yay!” “At last!” The shrill voices of pencils scattered throughout the room shouted joyfully in a frequency only they could hear. A dozen pencils assembled in the middle of the room, bouncing with excitement. “Ouff to ze meesing place!” called a bright yellow mechanical pencil from some foreign country. “Yes, yes!” eleven other voices cried. “No!” said an old red pencil that was faded and worn. All the other pencils turned to him. “Have you not heard? Our meeting place,” he said slowly, “was discovered.” Twelve pencils gasped. “Yes. The human has moved the couch!” More gasps. “Were—were—?” asked a blue pencil fearfully. “Yes,” said the red pencil gravely. “All 388 pencils hiding there were discovered.” Most of the pencils burst into tears, except for one orange-colored pencil with an incredibly pink eraser. “I’m confused,” he said blankly. Red sighed deeply, though in truth he loved storytelling. “Listen, my young one, and be enlightened.” It was agreed, long ago, By the Founding Pencil Fathers of old, That, as far as I myself know, We, whether hot or cold; We, whether we had fear or joy, Whether we were green, or blue, Would gather together, girl and boy, And hide from the human, too. Why should we do this, this sorrowful task, Which would bring chagrin to the human race? We should do it, because as discussed in the past, It brought many smiles to the pencils’ face. So, whenever new pencils were stolen or bought (As is the case with most of you here) Some pencils would go, as we ought, And gather all the pencils near. We would hide under the couch, yes, With all the new pencils, we would. ‘Twas like a secret code, I guess, That spread to all pencils, as it should. Most pencils, even those who are new to the house, They know very well the secret code. So, they know to—” Rangey, the orange pencil, interrupted Red, though he wasn’t half finished. “!!!!!!!!!!!!” he said, making a noise which sounded like a dozen exclamation points. "Excuse me?" said Red, greatly offended. “Just tell me what it is,” Rangey whined. “I can’t understand you.” Red snorted indignantly, but did as Rangey commanded. “While the humans were asleep, we roamed the house, recruiting new pencils. When the humans woke up, we hid again under the couch. No one ever looked there. But apparently, today, someone did, and almost 400 good pencils were lost. Nowhere is safe if they have started looking in the most unlikely crooks and nannies.” The other pencils nodded solemnly. “Whatever shall we do?” asked someone. “We,” replied Red, “shall eva—” YEESH I have no clue where these dreams come from. Have you ever dreamed a weird dream, and then woken up and had no clue why you dreamed it? So have I, many times. All the other dreams I’ve had in my life were pretty much completely random, like meeting Mike Pence in the dentist office, or catching black snakes with my cousin and putting them in a burlap bag, or moving to France. Then why did I write this down? When I woke up this morning, all my pencils were gone. @PeregrinTook -

Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in "Write for the Tanki Newspaper!" Contest Contests Archive
Hello Tankers! In case you had not heard, the Newspaper is celebrating its 6 year anniversary! We would like to dedicate this month to celebrating all past and current reporters and newspaper administrators for their work that was put into this project. Also, to those that read and enjoy the newspaper; you are the reason why we’ve made it this far. Now, the purpose of this topic is to welcome in a new generation of readers and writers to the newspaper. This is a writing contest but that doesn’t mean someone who enjoys reading can’t participate. Invite your friends to take part and show them what the newspaper has to offer! Overview Let’s briefly discuss the structure of the contest before we get into the details. You must pick one type of article to write; either a guide, review, or story. It is up to you to pick the topic but it has to fit within the boundaries of the chosen category. You have over one month to pick your topic and write your article to be submitted via forum PM to a special newspaper account. I. Categories An author may only submit one article in one category. An article is considered a guide if it is providing instructions on how to do something, such as how to use a turret or hull, or how to play on a certain map. Those are just a few specific examples that deal with certain game objects. Guides can also be based on gameplay concepts like camping, capturing flags, or passing the rugby ball. If you are good at giving instructions, this is a great category for you. An article is considered a review if it expresses an opinion based on given facts, such as a review of an update or event. Specific examples could be about the new mission chains update or an eSports or Parkour competition. If you have strong opinions that you are willing to share, this the category for you. An article is considered a story if it tells the tale of fictional events. The story can be based on a non-fictional event but cannot be an exact copy and must be fictionalized. Everything from the classic murder mystery to talking fairies and galloping unicorns; the sky's the limit. If you have a limitless imagination, then look no further. II. Rules One person can only submit an article on one account. If multiple participants are using the same network, proof of there being two individuals must be provided One person can only submit in one article category All participants that are being considered for prizes must have followed by the EULA and Game rules for the duration of the contest and as recently as 3 months before the contest began The submission itself must not violate the EULA or Game Rules Plagiarism is strictly forbidden. The organizers of this contest reserve the right to disqualify submissions at its discretion Entries in the Guide and Review categories must be related to Tanki in some way. Entries in the Story category are not required to be related to Tanki in terms of subject matter. The article submitted must be at least 400 words in length To make the judging process move quicker, only articles written in English will be considered III. Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in The Newspaper's 6th Anniversary! Newspaper Archive
It's almost unbelievable, but start of the May marks the sixth anniversary of the English Tanki Online Newspaper. Six years ago, the founding fathers of the Newspaper put forward the very first Issue. Since that day, Tanki Online Newspaper produced 74 more Issues consisting of almost 2,000 topics that were written by more than 50 reporters and directed by 7 administrators. A huge THANKS goes to all past and present reporters, administrators, designers and other assistants who put hours and days of their precious time to produce quality content for this really marvelous project, but mainly to all of YOU, our dear readers, who have supported us with your feedback and appreciation. We hope you will continue rooting for us even in all upcoming months. Stay tuned because we have some exciting plans to reveal shortly. ;) Cheers to many more years of great Newspaper content.- 12 replies

Enjoy the contest! If you're not the best at Rugby mode, check out the special guide! -
This topic has served its purpose well for the past four and a half years, but its time for it to close. We have started a new one that has similar content. Issues are lined out by seasons instead of two different time periods because there are different eras of the newspaper in between. The article genres now have their own respective topics for ease of access. If you have any suggestions for the Newspaper Archive, please leave them in the Newspaper Suggestions topic!

Guide [Issue 74] Submitting a Successful Reporter Application
Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in [Issue 74] Submitting a Successful Reporter Application Newspaper Archive
Hello content hungry readers, it's time we discuss applications again. It's no secret that the number of reporters has been slowly diminishing for some time now. The newspaper administration has not given up its quest to bring new writers on to the newspaper team. Today, the goal is simple; explain how you can submit the best application you can in a way that gets our attention and ultimately earns you a spot on our roster. Introduction If you're familiar with the newspaper, you may remember Fen-Harel's article, What makes a Good Reporter Application? This article follows the same premise, although this time it is being told directly from an administrator's perspective. The paper itself is much different than what it was only 2 years ago. The paper hasn't stopped taking applications for a long time and the application itself has evolved to what it is currently. This is in addition to other new initiatives and practices that occur now but did not back then; thus, it is time to review what we're looking for in applicants to the reporter team. We recently came to the realization that many of you reading through the application or this article are not that familiar with the newspaper itself. As a result, we've added extra descriptions and noted some of the benefits of being a reporter. Since that is stated in the application topic, I won't go there. This article is meant to address the requirements to become a reporter and how you can fill out the application in a way that shows you fit the qualities we are looking for in candidates. There are two main parts to the application, the questions and the article(s) you provide. Lets talk about the questions first and then we'll get to the actual writing portion of the app where you truly show your skill. Application There are two underlying sections to the application that most do not know about. Question number 1-6 are the introduction of you as it relates to Tanki and the newspaper. Questions number 7-10 are the meat of the bones in terms of what we judge and are looking for. Here is a little bit of background on each question. #1. What is your in-game nickname (include all alternate accounts used)? By far the easiest question to answer. Simply tell us your full, unedited or shortened, accurate nickname for the account you are applying with and all other alternate accounts you own. You cannot apply with an alternate account from the one you would prefer to use. Alternate accounts are checked as well, so if the main account you're applying with checks out but your alternate doesn't, that can have an effect on the outcome. #2. What is your gender? We've deemed this appropriate to properly introduce who you are because all we see is a nickname, we can't see through the screen. We don't want to assume your gender only to find out we were wrong. Getting it out and done up front saves time. #3. What is your Skype ID? If you don't have Skype, you'll want to get one. Our primary communication is through the well known program. #4. When did you register your account (approximate date)? This tells us how long you've been playing the game, if you couldn't tell. While its true that new accounts (less than 6 months in existence) are not usually accepted, it is still worth showing your writing skills even if your game knowledge and tenure is lacking. #5. How much time do you spend in Tanki? Looking for how many hours a week you spend playing the game. It can be 5, 8, 10 3, 2, even 1 hour a week. Zero hours a week can cause some concern, but we're looking for good writing and knowledge of the game, not someone that plays the game the most. It can also give us an idea of your availability. #6. Do you have any writing experience in other projects? Maybe you've written for a school paper or for another online game. Anything that relates to writing for a sizeable platform of viewers is worth mentioning. Whether or not you have worked on other projects is not a huge factor in our decision, but still relevant. #7. Why do you want to write for the Tanki Newspaper? Answer honestly, compellingly, and be genuine above all. We can tell if you have alternative motives behind why you're applying by the way you answer this question. I shouldn't have to tell you what you should and should not say, you can deduce what your answer will be. #8. What is your age? This gives us a general idea of what you have going on in your life and who you may be as a person. Also, by the nature of the position, we can't let just anyone take the reigns. We do not accept people younger than 15 years of age. #9. Please provide at least one example article. Example article should contain at least 700 words. It MUST be related in some way to Tanki Online. If you want to submit a story, please provide at least one additional article that is Tanki related. This is self-explanatory, we will get to the specifics in the next section. #10. Any other information relevant to your application that you feel would be helpful? Things that would be relevant are awards for good writing, community service projects, what you're studying if in college/university, what kind of articles you'd prefer to write about, etc. You have a lot of freedom with this question, don't let it go to waste! Presentation Not only does an eye-opening introduction help direct attention and increase the likelihood of someone reading an article, the way in which an article is presented play's a huge part. An article that is laid out with different headers to separate different points and has pictures that help enforce content creates a more enjoyable read. Without such breaks in between paragraphs, all that is seen is a wall of text and is much less pleasing to the eye. Headers introduce and separate ideas As I did above, I used a small header in between paragraphs to break up the pace and transition to other content. Sometimes they speak for themselves but are used to hint at the next point much of the time. They can act in place of a transitional sentence, although its find if you still use a sentence to transition to the next point in addition to a header. Using a mix of large and small headers are essential for articles on this platform. I've already used 3 in the pale turquoise color and one small header in this section using white. If you're wondering how you come up with these headers, it's very simple. Before you start writing the article, list the topics you want to cover as if it were your grocery list. Make sure you go through your points the order that best suits the information discussed. You wouldn't want to talk about how to capture a flag before you talk about how to take the flag. You should be able to come up with some large sections and specific topics within that group to talk about in smaller sections. Here is a quick example from Hexed and Zenith's article The Ultimate Guide to Magnum where he describes the learning curve in a small header and introduces several tactics to enhance performance with the turret. Other tools can be used to not only break up stretches of paragraphs but get to the point much sooner. Bulleted or numbered lists (whether inserted with forum tools or with text formatting) make it easier to explain an idea. Images or video are also quite helpful and often convey ideas better than when using words. Pictures also help with associating the ideas presented. If you're going to talk about how a turret performs against another, its worth using a picture of the turret you're talking about as seen in most Ultimate guides to turrets. Only use a maximum of two different colors and leave most of your content on they automatic grey color. Avoid using text colors (for an extended duration) that appear very sharp on this background like red or blue as they are hard to read in any exposure. If you do not find the desired color in the section above click "More Colors..." and find a lighter hue of the red or blue you want. Information Introduction Now that we've gone over how to plan and showcase your discussion, now it's time to get specific about what that discussion might entail. I want to preface this section with some of what I said in response to Fen's request for comment about his article. I know it's selfish of me to start with this, but I mention this because my view hasn't changed simply because I help manage the paper and the ideas mentioned are pretty universal. These things are relevant to candidates, reporters, and writers of all levels. "In my view, the article you submit for an application to join the team should be thorough, concise, and thoughtful. To be thorough is to be aware of different sides or angles. Concise in your phrasing, along with grammar; your style. Thoughtful, the one that weighs the biggest. This paper has seen a lot of diversity in writer's style and what they chose to write about. Each piece has its purpose. Each piece has creativity within..." By "different sides or angles," I mean covering everything you can address in relation to the topic discussed. It means you've gone over everything you possibly can in a guide or you've addressed differing opinions in a review. The next point relates to presentation but ties into the point of the article because you want to make sure you're phrasing your ideas in the best way possible. Lastly, a "thoughtful" article is something that is noteworthy and should be featured in the newspaper. At the end of the day, the reason you're writing about a specific topic should be clear and it should be about something that other people would want to read. Topics and Themes What should you talk about in your article? Well, it's probably a good idea to write something about TANKI! Even something that vaguely relates to the game, such as Quantum's Rocking Out on Tanki or Yisroel.Rabin's If the English Community was a Bowling Alley. We ask for articles that tie into the game so we can judge your knowledge of the game; this is why if you send in a story, we ask that you submit something else Tanki related. When deciding what to write about, it's important to consider the overall theme or purpose behind the article itself. What is it you want to do with this piece of writing? Do you want to inform, persuade, or entertain?. This is a question you have to ask yourself every time you go to write something if you accepted as a reporter. You have to make the decision based on what you are capable of writing, based on knowledge of the game, style of writing, and ability to convey that theme in the given article type. Here is what I mean for each kind of article. Guide: requires the most game knowledge and ability to instruct others on how to be better Review: ability to present your opinion of something convincingly Interview: ask questions that enable the interviewee to express thoughts and opinions Stories: tell a tale that captivates the reader Other: create laughter with obvious humor eSports/Parkour: knowledge of eSports or Parkour and ability to write about them within parameters of different kinds of articles If you cannot maintain the purpose behind the piece you are writing the entire way through, then you might have to look to writing something else. It is possible to mix some humor into an interview or review an aspect of something you're writing a guide about and integrate them in a way that doesn't take someone out of the article. It takes some practice, but it can be done. Originality This cannot be overstated, a reporter has to be able to think on their feet and come up with something that is new. New content and new ideas catch the readers eye and ultimately make the newspaper a better resource for enjoyment. If you're accepted as a reporter, you have to maintain your creative juices so that you get the most out of your writing career for the Tanki Newspaper. We're not saying you have to reinvent the wheel. This administration is not opposed to using old ideas that appeared in the newspaper previously because some themes are important enough to reiterate and update, such as the Ultimate Guides. That doesn't mean you can get on the reporter team and mooch off old articles, you have to be able to produce something fresh or else your tenure as a reporter will be short. Before Submission If you've read this far, clearly you are interested in filling out and submitting an application. One last thing before you get started on that, I want to give you a final few tips using the word successful. Spend more time than you think you need to. Don't whip out an entire article and application over a weekend, take a few days, a week even! Your submission requires a lot of thought, which requires the time to do such thinking. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Write what you are capable of writing about. Don't force a guide on to yourself when you're better at doing something else. Be yourself, know yourself. Creativity goes a long way. Being creative and original go hand in hand. Think outside of the box, don't follow someone's footsteps. Check your writing. Then, check it again. It is never a waste of time to reread your writing over and over or to rewrite something that can be said better. This is how our writing improves. Expect your writing to evolve. Even as you prepare an application, your writing should look different from anything you've written before because you've put in extra time to make sure it is great. Seek helpful resources. Don't get stuck in a rut, dig yourself out with writing tools that are at your disposal; dictionaries, thesauruses, the Amateur Writing Section, and various writing guides that have been published before. Separate your ego. If you've made no changes to your writing after you've finished, you've probably convinced yourself that you've done everything right. Take a step back and look at it from the perspective of someone who would be reading your work. Focus on portraying your ideas as best you can. Don't be shy about taking the time to explain your points clearly. Often times, the best writing is super clear by virtue of it's length. Understand your chances. Most writers are turned away and never get the chance to write for the Tanki Newspaper. The small caveat in this case is that our numbers are low and we want to bring in some new faces. But ultimately, still have to be good at writing to get a spot. Learn. We would not have made the AWS section if we did not want to learn. We would not give feedback on applications if we did not want you to learn. Whether you apply and succeed, or apply and fail, we want you to have learned something along the way. Conclusion At the end of the day, you have to have the writing ability to earn a spot. Other factors like age, motivation, and karma can affect the outcome of the application regardless of whether you're good at writing or not. The newspaper administration tries it's best to make the right judgement on each applicant. Best of luck to all that apply! I highly recommend possible applicants to try writing content in the Amateur Writing Section. It is a great place to get feedback from reporters and forumers. In addition to writing for feedback in that section, it is now possible to write for the newspaper without being a reporter in a recent initiative. Contest [Issue 70] Tanki Puzzle #1
Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in Newspaper Archive
Apologies for the wait. There was some unexpected processing time that had to occur. If you do not see your name on the list under the spoiler when you know you submitted correctly, then you either did not submit a completed image, submitted more than once, or plagiarized someones template, as took place here. Someone distributed an image with the completed answers. That template was found on numerous submissions. Although not explicitly specified in the rules above, plagiarism is never acceptable in ANY contest. If you submitted the template, you have officially been warned. The next instance of breaking contest rules will result in a ban from newspaper contests. Thank you. -

Sorry, that wasnt made clear. What I meant is that the time and date on the task bar were part of the things you can't crop out. You can cut, blur, or fill in the other items on your task bar because they are irrelevant. I need to know that you have completed a battle in this perid because the paints are already in the shop and not temporary. An example will be included in the next edition. The number of maps you can use out numbers the amount you cant, so I'm not going to list most maps. -

Announcement Hindi Samachaar Patra ka Thaharaav | Hindi Newspaper Hiatus
Vikingsrallentando replied to Vikingsrallentando in Hindi Samachaar Patra ka Thaharaav | Hindi Newspaper Hiatus Hindi Samachar Sangrah (Hindi News Archive)
Priya Hindi Pathakon, Humare paas apke liye thodi buri khabar hai, Hindi Samachaar patra iss September ke liye rukne waala hai, tab tak, jab tak ki hum koi aage ki soochna na de. Team aur Administration (@Flexoo aur Mai) ke liye aayi kaafi saari adchanon ki wajah se humare paas koi doosra chaara nahi raha, iske alawa ki hum kuch samaye tak iss samachaar patra ko rok kar rakkhein. Kuch Hindi Patrakaar ab bhi rahenge aur doosre apne doosre lakshyon ko paane ke liye jayenge. Applications KHULE hi rahenge, to hum naye reporters ko ki talash me rahenge taaki hum Hindi Samachaar patra ka dobara shuruwaat kar sake, aur wo bhi jald se jald. Hum aapke dhairya ki prashansa karte hain, apna khayal rakkhiyega. Dear Hindi Readers, We have unfortunate news for you, the Hindi Newspaper will be going on a hiatus this September until further notice. Various roadblocks have presented themselves to the team and the administration (@Flexoo and I) does not see an alternative option other than to close the paper temporarily. Some Hindi Reporters will remain and others will leave and pursue other ventures. Applications will remain OPEN, so we will still recruit reporters and hopefully start the Hindi Newspaper back up really soon. We appreciate your patience, take care.- 42 replies
