Chapter 2 Mysterious Box

Astonished by his offer, I stared. Recruit me? I thought. I didn't do anything much to be worth this recruitment. I glanced at Mr. Gills, and I could see anger and pride mixed in his eyes. Of course, he didn't want to lose one of his best officers to some strangers, but he was proud of me also to be worth this attention.
"Wait!" Shouted Mr. Gills, "What will the police department get out of this? Sparky here is one of our best officers, and I don't intend to lose him to a couple of strangers."
One of the strangers glanced at him in irritation and sighed. "The police department will get $25,000, also better weapons and utilities."
"Better weapons? Anything more powerful than the ones we're using should be sent to the military then."
"Have I not said that we are part of the military? And that we have superior technology over the other branches?"
"Oh ya? What kind of 'superior' technology do you have then?" Mr. Gills demanding and putting air quotes when saying 'superior'.
"We have knowledge of Nano-robotics, laser, pressurized fire, plasma and more."
"I don't believe you."
"I'm not asking you to."
"Well you should at least give him some more information about what you're trying so hard to recruit him into."
I was surprised. It sounded like Mr. Gills was giving up already, I had no idea what I was going into. I don't even know if I want to go into this.
Calmly, the stranger who hadn't been arguing with my boss took a sip of water and informed me.
"Being part of this corps is a highly honorable position. Your salary will be at least...quadrupled."
Mr. Gills jaws dropped to the ground, and his eyes bulged out.
The stranger continued. "First, you are to fill out a survey based on your personality and character. You will then be put into a team with other members who will either match up with yours, or cover-up what you lack in." He took another sip of water. "Then you will do training as a team through many obstacles. If you pass, you're in the military branch, if not you'll go home with nothing."

That didn't sound good to me, I'm not exactly an Olympic athlete, and neither did I have so much muscle that it looks like I'm on steroids. However, soon the two strangers convinced me and Mr. Gills, and very soon I was packing my stuff and saying good-bye to everybody. As I was about to leave the police station doors for the last time, my friend Darren caught up to me.
"When are you coming back man?"
I thought about it for a moment; I fail on purpose those tests, but they said I was going to be with a team, and we fail together. I didn't want to mess up these future team members dreams or anything. "I don't know." I replied.
"Are you ever going to come back?"
"Probably not."
Darren looked uneasy, but he recovered soon.
"Hold on a second, I've got something for you." He then ran back up the stairs while I waited in the lobby. The lobby was actually quite big, with perimeter walls that were white. Pairs of windows appeared at a pattern of every few meters. There were two automatic doors for the entrance and a desk behind them a few meters back. Comfy little chairs dotted the lobby. I was actually quite relieved; I hate sappy good-byes and all, no tears or anything. Just a straight out, cold good-bye and not glance back. You can't change destiny. However, I always thought that destiny hated me. I waited for Darren a little longer. I was beginning to think that Darren was jealous and decided to ditch me. I waited a little longer and decided that he wasn't coming back, it's been at least 15 minutes. Just as I was about to turn around and head out the door. I heard panting and someone shout "Wait!" I turned around to see Darren coming towards me with a big metal box. It clanked in rhythm every time Darren took a step. He smiled as he gave it to me.
"Something special inside." He said with a glint in his eye. "However, there is a time lock on it. This box will open by it'self so don't worry about it." He smiled once again and handed it over.
I took the box and was surprised on how heavy it was, I didn't expect it too weigh too much, but this thing did.
"Can you tell me when it's going to open?" I asked.
"Nope, sorry." He patted my shoulder and turned me around. We walked together to the parking lot. It was where the strangers said they were going to pick me up.
Mr. Gills was suspicious of them, so he said I can keep my police gun and if they give any sign of kidnapping me, I can put up a fight. A big van eventually came, it had a big picture of an exploding tank on the side of the van and then "Tanks Battalion" written in big letters across it.
"I think they are trying to get attention from everybody in the world." Whispered Darren. I grinned at that.
They told me to put my stuff in the back and that I would be riding alone.
I waved a final good bye at Darren. The doors were closed automatically and we were off, heading towards an unknown destination.
