OPPOSITION TO MAINSTREAM This short film convention says that a lot of short films are usually very different from other main stream media. They have very different formats and styles and can be very experimental. The audience often likes this simply because it can give them a different experience. Ours is different from most main stream films because we have very little net character growth. Instead of it being a film about our protagonist changing for the better, it’s about the protagonist trying change for the better. It’s also different because it does not resolve the issue that the protagonist wanted to fix, that being having a better relationship with his dad but ends up not spending more time with his dad and when he grows up he does not spend much time with his son. We want to do this because it keeps our film shorter and less predictable. Witch is something I wanted to do because I have a short attention span and I don’t like how I can predict most of a film in the first 1/3ed. LENGTH AND STORYLINE Most shot films are between 3 and 20 minutes. Some can be up to 40 minutes and as shot as 1 minute but this is unusual. Ours will probably be around 4-6 minutes. Because of this short time most short films have a very simple narrative to keep the pacing acceptable and not feel rushed. We have done this in out film, the story is very simple and it is also easy to show the context of the film meaning we don’t have to cram so much information in the first part of the film. This makes the film easier to follow. In short films, there is also usually very little dialog. In our film, most of the story is shown though actions. Eg we know that they don’t have much time for each other because we can see that Stan does not turn up to his ‘big game’ and we know that Robert is upset because we can see that he keeps looking over to were his dad usually is and then gets annoyed then starts not doing very well because he lets it distract him. TWIST Including a twist is a common convention in short film is common, this is because it is an easy way to make it interesting. A twist is more common in short films because the short storyline can give less clues as to what is going to happen. We have a twist in our film. That being, the issue that they are trying to resolve is never solved and the protagonist ends up having the same issue latter on. The issue being, Robert is annoyed that his dad never spends any time with him, then when he is older, he can’t spend any time with his kids.
