[Issue 5] All You Need To Be a Pro - Community

Since the initial release of this series, I’ve encountered a bit of criticism concerning its name: “All You Need To Be A Pro”. Dear readers, trolls, and critics: let’s be honest. We all know that to be a recognized, respected and valuable member of this community, it takes much more than an expensive garage. There is more to “being pro” than simply having “pro” equipment. But, as most things in life are, “pro” is a relative term. There’s the element of skill (i.e. being able to adroitly maneuver one’s tank, having the ability to outwit an opponent, etc.), but how much you "up your game" is entirely up to how much you play, practice, or an innate knack for pc or video gaming that you just “have”. For the sake of simplicity and to avoid redundancy, I’ll focus on the social component one must possess in order to excel in this online community. This will involve recommended software, programs, and any behavioral advice I can give, having spent a lot of time getting to know players.

Behavior: Why People Do What They Do

There are 3 things that everyone seeks, one way or another, to achieve in a community. Three things that are the impetus for everything that anyone ever does, anywhere, whether it be in your social life, tanki, or around any group of people. These three things fall conveniently under the acronym: “ABC”. They are:

1. Acceptance
2. Belonging
3. Competence

These three things build one’s self esteem. It is the need for acceptance in a troll infested community, for example, that causes Contaminated to post those horribly offensive/hilariously funny memes. It is the sense of belonging that makes clan members ceaselessly hunt for a blacklisted player. It’s the need for competence that drives the noob to drug just to capture the last flag in a game of worthless fund. As you can see, common behaviors people exhibit, more often than not, spring from these three fundamental needs.

What’s the moral of this story? My advice is to realise that Tankionline, as brilliant and expansive as it is, is merely a game where kids, adults, teens, and even seniors come to kill some time, make some online friends, and have fun. Don’t take the game too seriously. Don’t pound your fists at the mindless mult, or the teammate who captured the flag that should have been yours. As bizarre as it may sound, remember that your life and identity is so much more than how you perform in your daily battles (and, well, if it isn’t, perhaps you should change that :P). It is truly a wonderful experience to be part of something with players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and to share defeats and victories with them. In a nutshell? Try, but don’t try too hard. Ironically, a person who tries LESS to be noticed is usually the one to be respected.

Resources

Having knowledge and resources at your disposal can greatly help portray the image you’d like people to see of you. These resources I speak of range from software editing programs, useful applications created by players, to general abilities and common sense about creating forum posts. Off the top of my head, some things you may want to learn, if you haven’t already, are: how to take screenshots, how to edit and caption screenshots, how to post screenshots, free image hosting websites, how to screen videos, how to edit videos, post videos, create and use a youtube channel, you to use skype, including voice and video functions, how to create a xat chatbox, how to embed a chatbox, how to install tankviewer, how to use tankviewer, how to install tankstestingtool, how to use tankstestingtool, and how to create a free website. Phew! Try saying all that in one breath! :P I’m sure I’ve named only a few of the many resources and free, useful tools that are available to esteemed tankmen readers like you. You will be amazed at the positive effects you’ll get from other members of the community if you can draw from these resources. For example, a neat clan topic with even MEDIOCRE artistic images will greatly enhance the interest and support you receive. If you have a lousy image and sloppy, disarrayed text, you will almost undoubtedly get a facepalm image from one of the community trolls (seeking, as you should remember, acceptance by fellow members in their trolling society). On a side note, not all criticism is bad. The degree of facepalming you get will alert you as to how much improvement you need. A simple “*facepalm*” isn’t all that bad; you’ve got only a bit of housecleaning to do. A Captain Picard facepalm is a bit worse. But dear reader, if you ever, God forbid, get a GODZILLA facepalm, you have some serious work to do. As we all know, “when godzilla gives you the facepalm, you know the fail is epic.”

How lazy can one be? Seriously, it can't be that hard to think of a new topic. That's the annoying thing about chiswo's¹ topics, hardly anything new, just a series that will never end until the summer holidays when he has a whole 4 weeks ('WOW!' says criswho) to think of something. Apart from that, this article is worse than that article they put at the bottom of real newspapers. What do you call them again...? Oh yes, they're called 'adverts'. Your first 'All you need to be a pro' article was the best, because it is the least boring.

Selena,

I see no constructive criticism in that post. Criticism of that kind - without any intent on making the post better - can be called "Trolling". If you could give reasonable and forthright reasons why this article is a bad one and ways to improve it, rather than vague "boring"; "hardly anything new", then I am sure that chriswu - and me, who thought this article a very good one - will take those things to heart and aim to improve.

That is not constructive criticism, it is just criticism, but how I want him to improve?

And, if you are (yes I know you're not, but it's English) accusing me of being a troll, then there is absolutely no freedom of opinion here. I don't think there's anything good about the article apart from the grammar and punctuation being spot on.

Stop doing series things and do new stuff instead, because it seems like he has run out of ideas.

I thought you would have understood the word boring, but oh well. Anyway, there is nothing interesting, a new story or something would be interesting, not knowing what we'd see, instead of thinking all the time before every issue 'Oh, I bet it's gonna be another 'All You Need' thing, we've had enough of those already.' Hardly anything new; I say that because there are no new toics by chriswu, just series topics.

Well, I understand you've been hating for a while, in IC's forum thread, etc. Take your trolling somewhere else. If you don't like serials, why don't you say so?

And btw, this is the last of this particular series, which I wanted to wrap up. If you haven't realized, I wrote two "all you needs" this issue, in order to do that.

I apologize for any redundancy. Next issue will have new subject matter.

Selena,

If you are so critical of his writing, which is well done by the way, why did you not try to become a reporter? That way you can share all your wonderful ideas and incredible style with the rest of the community. I would look forward to reading your work

Calling you a troll is a statement of his opinion.

if you are accusing me of being a troll' date='[/quote']

And yet, you insist

there is absolutely no freedom of opinion here.

The irony.

@chriswu, this has nothing to do with your clan; even if I had not bothered to comment there my comment here would be more or less (Quantum Theory) the same. Now, what I don't understand about the press team is that you ask for feedback but when I give you some you accuse me of being a troll? A troll, for giving my opinion! So, I'm guessing all you want are good and positive comments. How on earth will you improve? A troll?

Selena, look up at what I said. There was nothing constructive. Basically, all you said in your post was an elaborate of saying "This is boring, I hate it.". That type of criticism is rarely accepted by authors.

If you don't understand what 'boring' and 'I hate it.' means that's your problem. And, accusing me of being a troll is no way to get yourself classified as an 'author'. Now, answer my question.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Realize, though, that you are just one voice from the pool of input my co-authors and myself receive. Some people prefer series, because they provide a fuller context from which one can read. I have to admit, though, that you're the first person I've heard who dislikes series. You want me to hear your feedback, and I have. However, presuming that the person you are criticizing is dull and stupid, as can easily be inferred from your original post, is a terrible way to send your comments. If you want to be treated with courtesy and respect, learn to treat others likewise.

P.S. What’s in a name, anyways? This article has totally different subject matter than all the previous “all you needs”. The only reason I titled this article under that particular series was to help address some player’s concerns about how it takes more than a good garage to be a “pro”. Hypothetically, if I had named this article something else, would you be happier?

P.P.S. Don’t try to throw in “Quantum Physics” to buy an intelligent impression. Any person with the slightest philosophical background knows what “Schrodinger’s Cat” is.

I only introduced QP because you sound like an intelligent boy who would understand. Now, first I must apologise and explain everything. When I wrote the original message I was a little bit irritated, this thing logs me out if I take too long typing. So, the reason I hate the series things is: chriswu, I find that the first and last articles in your series are the best, the middle ones just aren't that... (this applies more to stories). The outside ones grab people's attention.

That's because in a story, you have your:

Setting__Rising Action___Development___Climax__Resolution

It makes sense that the rising action and the Climax/Resolution grab people's attention.
