CTF Focus: Smaller Maps

Series Introduction
Everyone wants to be a pro. From the low end of ranks to the highest of the game, no one wants to finish last. But, wanting is just as good as nothing if you don't put in practice, strategy, and good teamwork on the battlefield. CTF Focus will be my first series that I will be doing as reporter. The goal of this series is to educate those players that don't think along the lines of strategy while playing a simple game of Tanki. There are many maps on Tanki, much of which have already been reviewed by fellow reporters. The maps this series focuses on follows a distinct pattern, size. Many players do battles in big maps, where there are larger teams, greater crystal drop rates, and bigger funds.

Combe
First map features Combe. Well known for Capture the Flag, it is an easy beginner's map. There are no heights, no sudden changes in elevation, and a clear line of sight throughout the map. Seems straight forward right? Wrong.

Advantages of Combe
> Small map, easy to take and capture flags in a short period of time.
> No range issues with any medium ranged weapons.

Disadvantages of Combe
> The size of Combe is probably a disadvantage for most players even though many think it is quicker to capture flags in, since weapons such as Freeze can slow down opponents tremendously and make capturing next to impossible.
> Limited amount of hiding places, making Shafts vulnerable to attack.

Best Team for Combe:
Weapon choice
> 1 (or 2) Freeze(s), 1 (or 2) Isida(s), Thunder/Smoky
Hull choice
> Hornets, Vikings, and a defending Mammoth Freeze
> Faster tanks will have the advantage, since this map is smaller, and can capture a flag while your opponent is still respawning.
Paint choice: Choose paints that have protection against Freeze. This will minimize the effect of Freeze on your tank, so you can capture quicker. If you don't have Freeze protection, Firebird is another weapon that is often used in these small maps.

Defense Mode:
The Freeze will work best to slow opponents down, and not kill opponents. Killing will drain too much of valuable freezer, in case another player were to aid the attacking tank. The Isida should back up the Freeze, and disallow it to die, since it does a great deal of slowing down the enemy in capturing your flag. Once the opponent is slowed to minimal speed, the Freeze should retreat back to flag position, and let the Thunder/Smoky take over in killing your attacker, thus returning your flag to its original position.

Offense mode:

Bring an Isida, a Freeze, and a Thunder or Smoky and charge onto the slope of your enemy's base. Have an Isida clip away and attempt to kill an opponent's defender. This will probably attract a defender at you, and have your teammates team up, and kill that singled out defender. With only three more, it is a fair battle if you work as a team, and come out successfully with the flag. The Isida should stay behind either the Thunder or the Freeze, since it has the capability to heal. Keep the Isida alive, as it may be your last hope to capturing. If a Freeze dies in battle, when it respawns, have it defend, and your defending Freeze help with the offensive. A smart idea would be to keep a defender behind the walls of your own base (coded turquoise on diagram), in case all of your members die and cannot respawn in time.

Island
Second map is lsland, possibly the smallest map in the Tanki collection and a favorite for capturing quick flags and having small team battles. The limited amount of space gives an edge to some weapons, but also disable other weapons, so weapon choice is crucial in winning a Capture the Flag battle here.

Advantages of Island
> Another small map, capturing flags take only seconds if there are no obstacles.
> This map concentrates all of its players in one place, where there are no secrets, just straight-forward battling for the flag.

Disadvantages of Island
> Once again, Freeze can really affect your performance, since they can run around the map in a matter of seconds.

Best Team for Island:
Weapon choice
> Freezes, Firebird, Isida
Hull choice
> Hornets, Mammoth/Viking
-> A stronger tank would be useful to stand in the middle of the map. Other Hornets would have enough health to withstand the power of the Freeze, but also have the necessary speed.

Game play
Because of the small size of the map, players often chose to completely ignore defensive and offensive structure, and just either stay on your opponents, or continuously attacking, and attempting to capture the flag.

Have 2 Hornets attack on the enemy base, preferably Hornets with an Isida and a Firebird/Freeze. Let the person with the flag go back on their trail, and through the middle, where a Mammoth Freeze (Symbol X in diagram) can slow down your opponent while you break for your home base. This will allow you to capture flags at a faster rate, and allow backup if one player drops the flag.

Being that you've seen both of the strategic plans that these small maps have to offer, it can be noticed that the weapon Freeze is very effective in smaller maps, for they can help slow down and diminish your enemy's health, and hopefully return the flag. This strategy works in other smaller maps as well, and may these tips help you to build your team and come out of a Capture the Flag match victorious!

Great article! I personally think that Railgun's pretty good as a sniper in Combe, as it's not as vulnerable as Shaft :)
