Winning and losing the battle

 Share

Recommended Posts

In CTF, if you go on the defensive and stay on the defensive you will never win the battle nor win the war. You will fight until you reach the point of exhaustion and get high kill points, but it will be wasted if your end score is zero. On a small team battle, the top three with the highest kill points will get a small portion of the pot. But if you are in it for the XP only, then you are achieving your goal.

It never ceases to amaze me seeing a team on the defensive the entire battle. It's as if they are fighting for their right to earn a zero for their efforts. Several times, I have tried to capture the flag, in an effort of trying to give my team something so not all of them will go home empty handed. But died trying because my teammates didn't have my back. When I respawned I saw my teammates milling around acting completely bored. Many times the winners of a battle is decided before the first shot is ever fired. The team who is on the offense or aggressive from the beginning will win the battle.

The best CTF I have ever played on any of my accounts are the ones with the ending score of 0-0. Both teams are on the offensive and the battle ground is somewhere in the middle between the two flags, not at the base. In this case, the ones with the highest kill points on both teams will get the coveted crystals.

Remember, as you rank up better weapons, hulls and paint become available. XP is easy to obtain, it's the crystals that are hard to get. The initial cost of a hull or weapon is relatively cheap, it's the upgrades that cost. As you rank up but you don't have the upgrades to go along with it, you become an easy target for the other team. Everyone loves a "one shot wonder" (someone who can be killed with one shot). They are easy to spot and will be hunted down for that easy kill point.

So, go ahead, play on the defensive and when the other team grabs you flag, sure let them score, don't bother trying to prevent it. (Ohhh! Look at that tank with the blue bar and red flag. Isn't that prettty! Oh and he just took a nose dive over the side. Did he make it? He sure did. Wow such a feat of daredevil. I wonder how he did that. I think I will sit here and watch him do it again and again and again). And you will lose every time.

Okey, I'm off my soapbox. Comment if you want. Flame me, defame me, agree with me or not, it doesn't matter. I have said my peace (piece).

I been there and felt the same way. When you go up in rank that will go away. I would go into it but you covered it. :)

Nice quality rave there :) If you're committed to the game, you will noticed that there will be fewer and fewer noobs as you rank higher, people who are there not so much for xp or crystals, as much as a good game.

It's always the isida's. They need to play both offensive and defensive. Too often I see a low ranked isida-hornet combo just sit in one place and heal a defensive camper like a mammoth-shaft. That's one reason I prefer higher ranked games.

I had the same problem today. I joined a Silence CTF when the score was 11:9, so pretty even. Rank range was up to WO2. I used a M1 Smoky/M1 Mammoth combo. The problem was, the people on my team were playing more of a TDM rather than trying to get the flag. There were two M0 twins players, who were not doing much. Way to many Isidas - two M1 Isidas and two M0 Isidas. And the other team? Two M1 Smoky/M1 Titans, and two M1 Shafts taking out all the wasps/hornets that went up the ramp. The Isidas couldn't do anything except heal. They kept going up the ramp and hiding behind the buildings, and after being sniped over and over again, they still kept doing it. It wasn't until I drugged and went into their territory that my teammates finally decided to do something to help. I left the game with 47 kills 30 deaths, and ended up playing a Noise CTF with higher ranking players who were actually playing the game right.

Nicely written and I agree. Its the same with CTP too. I've been in team where long range guns just don't bother coming up to capture while I get killed trying to get some points for the team. Sometimes I just wonder whether they forgot the game mode that they are playing since they seem to be playing TDM.

Yes, I have seen a Twins-Mammoth in a battle with a HOARD of drugs. He spent half the battle laying mines, but we were already losing 5-4. At the last few minutes, he only drugs once or twice, and we ended up losing.

Some people clearly choose to play in CTF mode for XP, not victory. You can kind of understand why - defensive/reactive playing in any game/sport is simply far, far easier than being offensive/proactive, and CTF is the only mode where you can play defensively in this way. I often join CTF games on the losing side and try to turn things around, but when the team turns out to be losing because they lack aggression and the desire to win I tend to bail pretty fast.
