You probably using m0 wasp? M0 railgun can blow m0 wasp at your rank. Railgun should have powerful shot but have longer reload time, in other word, currently it is fine as it is.

IMO, M3 smokey is great and powerful. I'm using m2 mammoth and m2 smokey at the moment..

Railgun is too powerful and needs nerfing or Smoky crits need increasing. Smoky needs so much more skill then an over powered Railgun.

Yes smoky m2 to 3 upgrade is barely noticeable except for the more numerous crits... And they also look pretty similar as well

Similar - but different! The key thing with Smokey is usually that you need to get a critical plus a few other hits to get a kill; how many "a few" is depends on those two numbers; just a few HP can be the difference between a kill at (say) the third shot, or the forth, depending on hull and paint. And that in turn may allow the enemy to kill you...

Yeah, the difference between Smoky m2 and m3 is pretty small. The average damage per min of m3 (also considering critical hits) is only 15% higher than m2.

 

Given the high price of m3 I'd recommend to upgrade Smoky to m3 only if you *really* like the gun.

 

Still, m3 does make a difference in average. In 1-1 vs. Smoky m2, the higher firing rate and the higher damage of critical hit can help you get ahead of your opponent - sure, if he lands a critical hit and you don't, you're most likely dead. That's the risk you take when going against a Smoky..

I can tell you from experience testing them both on the test server extensively that there IS a huge difference between m2 and m3.  I played with m2 for days in no supplies battles then upgraded to the m3 just to see if there was a difference and there was a HUGE difference in the amount of kills and criticals I got.  My dl went from 2 to about 4 on average after going from m2 to m3. The stats in the game aren't correct.

In 8 seconds of shooting:

 

- M2 Smokey gets off 4 rounds getting a 25% chance of at least one critical

- M3 Smokey gets off 5 rounds getting a 35% chance of at least one critical

 

So - from a one-in-four chance to a better than a one-in-three, which should be very noticeable.

The deal is, M3 And M2's are not made to have a huge amount of difference in attack between them, but just that touch of extra damage makes a lot of difference in the long term. 

 

@JamesM10: M2 Smoky is the most boring weapon you could play with :P You just shoot people, and hope for critical. Close-range weapons and Thunders and even Railguns and Twins (Dread the thought) are more fun. I would never ever ever use M2 Smoky over my M3 Isida. I despise it. Thats why Ive switched my aimed next weapon to M3 Thunder.

It gets pretty good when M2. I have used it on test server, it is pretty powerful.

Not twins, I eat isidas up all the time while they sit there and try to take me out buzzing away... Good luck getting close enough when I'm armed with twins though, its hilarious watching them try. Also if I get a critical with a smoky its over unless your using a mammoth or very heavy hull. Many times I've killed a isida with the smoky while it was latched on "sucking" my life out when the critical comes.
