Railguns are listed as doing a variable amount of damage, e.g. 93-139 for M2. Someone told me that the damage of a railgun that you actually get depends on where on the enemy tank you hit. They claimed hitting the tracks does more damage. Another post in a different forum says you get more if you hit from above.

But a post elsewhere in this thread says it is random.

Anyone know for definite what controls the damage?

It's random. I thought range defined the damage, but that is false. Railgun has infinite range, therefore the damage inflicted each shot is random. One shot you can one shot an m1 hornet (with m2 rail) and the next shot you might not. That has been like that for me for a while.

If you dont know hot to use it- you hate it, you go 5 and 50 with it

If you know how to use it- (me) you go 30 and 5, with the added benefit of being able to knock people all over the place and off the map.

Started MUs.. Damage's getting expensive. Will do a few steps reload and rotation speed probably :)

I would MU the reload to full. I did that for my M2 rail, then started the other MU's. It makes a huge difference when you need that shot a fraction a second before that other Railer.
