i play 30 mins day!

Just FYI, if you want to add something to your post after you post it, just use the Edit button instead of making multiple posts in a row.

I've neglected my M2 Railgun for the better part of a year now, ever since I got M2 Shaft. I'm using it more frequently now, and while it's a fun weapon to use, there are a lot of Railgun protection paints around, so I often find myself switching to something else.

A good weapon, but reloads too slow, and if against a skilled player, can knock off your aim. I personally prefer hammer, and when a person is charging a railgun at me (you know, the part when the barrel glows) I usually shoot the edge of their tank which throws off their aim most of the time, and most people do use either wasp or hornet with railguns, so... effective, but hard to use at short range (damage disadvantage) and limited fire rate.

I have a question about railgun and I could not find a definite answer anywhere so ill just post a question here:

How does railguns shot lose damage?

I know that it doesn't lose damage over distance, so how does it lose damage?

Also, how do you make your shot have the maximum damage?

Thank you

Guys, the angle or the place on the enemy tank that you hit has absolutely no effect on the amount of damage dealt. I hid all your posts as they will be misleading to anyone else that reads this topic.

The damage Railgun deals is random and fluctuates according to the rules of normal distribution. That means that in its potential damage range (133 to 199 for M3+) the more common damage values will be the ones closer to the middle value (166). The graph of damage distribution would look like this:

Normal_distribution_and_scales.PNG

So imagine that instead of the -4SD you have the minimum damage value (133). Then at 0SD you have the medium value (166), and at +4SD you have the maximum value (199). The percentages show how likely you are to get a value in that range every time you shoot. So getting the close-to-average value (around 125 to 139 damage) is will be almost 70% of your shots, while getting close to the minimum or maximum value will be only 0.2% of your shots, or 1 in 500.

Basically, the closer a value is to the maximum or minimum of the range, the less often is will come up. Therefore most of your shots will be around 133 damage and the high or low values will be a lot more rare.

Another aspect of reducing Railgun's damage is shooting through tanks. In this case we need to look at the penetration values of the gun. For M3 with full MU it's very simple - 100% penetration means that the second tank in line gets the same amount of power from the shot as the first one, as if the first tank wasn't even there. With lower grades it's more complicated, because not all damage from the shot goes through to the next tank.

I'll use Railgun M2 as an example, since that's what Pig.Mann has in his garage. Let's ignore all the damage distribution mess and assume that Rail M2 always deals 112 damage. This means that the first tank he shoots will get 112 damage, but the second tank in line will only get 61 damage from the same shot, because the penetrating power of Rail M2 is 55%. If there is a third tank in line, then the third one will get 34 damage. The fourth will get 18, fifth - 10, sixth - 6 and so on. That way you can only destroy about 6 or 7 tanks on very low health if you shoot them using Rail M2, but with M3+ you can shoot as many as you can fit in one line :)

I hope this answers your question.

P. S.

The angle at which you hit the tank doesn't affect the damage you deal, but it does affect the direction of the force with which your shot pushes the tank you hit. This has been well explained in V-logs and numerous guides, but basically if you hit the tank in the middle, they will most likely only get pushed back slightly, however if you hit the corner, then you can turn their tank and completely change the direction they are facing, or even flip them or force them to drive off a cliff, if they were moving or in the middle of a jump when you shot them. This is particularly useful for Railgun, since it has the highest knockback of all turrets and can be used to knock enemies aim off or disrupt their movement.

Yeah, thanks for the help. As i have said, this will work for other guns also, right?

My explanation - yes, true for all guns with a minimum damage and maximum damage range. The whole thing about damage being affected by which part of the tank you shoot does not apply to any gun.

From my expirience with rails (a lot) here is what i see.If rail hit me at left or right side (he does min dmg),but if he hit me in middle it does max dmd.I see it because i MU my viking m1,so when drugged double dmg rail m2 hit me at side of my tank,he does me 88*2=176 min dmg and dont kill me.But if he shoot me straight in the middle (135*2) he kill me.This is tested a lot in Monte Carlo :P

And look here http://tankionline.wikia.com/wiki/Railgun

  • High damage
  • Can penetrate multiple tanks
  • High impact force. Recoil can be used to achieve a soft land when jumping off high places
  • Good for parkour
  • Affordable (total price is almost exactly the average of all turrets' versions)
  • No damage drop off (infinite range)
  • Min damage only applies when hitting a target at a shallow angle
