It depends if you want to use smoky exclusively. I played smoky M2 with 1 microupgrade (1/50) all the way up to marshal and then I got smoky M3. If you only want to use smoky then microupgrade all the way as you get M3 for free, I think. I used a variety a weapons mainly on the smaller maps.

Smoky and viking are the best combination for me atleast because:

. It's aim cannot not be knocked off .

. Vikings speed and armour are perfect for killing.

.A smoky with doube damage can 2 shot hornet m2 or wasp.

.It reloads so quickly and has alot of critical hits.

                           I LOVE SMOKY! ^_^

Like hell the aim cannot be knocked off. You can't be serious. I use the same combo and the New! Lightweight! Viking gets knoocked off aim quite easily.

Since the viking re-make, the new Hunter is the better choice for smoky. It is much more stable and has more power than the Viking. It is a hair slower, but it is worth it for the added stability.

I am a player who recently started using Smoky.  However, I use an M1 hunter M1 smoky combo at the Major rank, so I'm starting to feel like equipment disadvantage is holding me back (I consistently see almost all of the M2 turrets, and I sometimes see an M3 isida/hornet combo).  I can usually manage a D/L of 1.2-1.5, and I place at the top of the scoreboard on most games that do not allow supplies, but M2 Firebirds, Twins, and Smokys can kill me pretty easily.  I have 127K crystals, and I am deciding if I should save for Northener kit, buy an M2 turret by itself, or buy the Minotaur kit instead.  Can anyone offer advice?

Northerner comes with Viking and you may not like that if you are used to Hunter (which basically has "old" Vikings stats).

Not sure if there are M2 kits with Smoky-Hunter, so maybe keep saving until possible June sale, and if you can get ~ 50% off then maybe buy smoky M2 and Hunter separately.  OR.... MU smoky periodically toward M2 (new MU prices make this affordable?) and buy Hunter on a sale.

Just buy thunder / twins + hunter / viking in June sale individually.

That is the surest way to make sure you are dead, because of the long reload.

Only way for rail to beat smoky, rico or twins is to shoot and immediately hide.

You are right. The only thing that keeps Smoky looking like it is a good weapon is the fact that Railgun is such a popular weapon and Railgunners tend to use light hulls. This common foe allows Smoky to kill enough tanks to obscure how much its been nerfed. Without a lot of light hulls to target Smoky is pretty feeble.  12 Smoky shots to kill a heavy shaft... shaft takes one shot to kill Smoky. Less than a 1 second of exposure to Fire means at least 50% loss of health.  Tanki's fallen in love with weapons that do massive damage ... meanwhile they make pop0gun Smoky weaker. SMH

Now I'm a full time smoky player, switched from rail coz I bought Paladin kit.

It gives me 35% from fire, freeze, twins.

I finish in top 3 always now without supplies, and first with supplies.

Yesterday I got 1012 score in a 15 minute non-pro battle, and got ~900 crystals for it.

Second best guy had below 500 score.

Smoky is absolutely trash at m0 and m1, but it makes a huge comeback from m2+.

It is super easy to kill titan shafts with smoky.

Just keep hitting the corner of their tanks. Impact force is massive.

Plus circle around them - shafts have the slowest turret rotation speed.

m3 smoky is extremely effective against other m3s. Its strength is its knock-back, which only a skilled player can make use of.

Medium hulls are better to knock off enemy's aim, its difficult with heavy hulls, as you can't move fast enough to find the optimum angle to shoot at the enemy.

Against rail, timing of your shot is everything. You need to wait for it to charge up, and shoot just before it is about release.

Works very well, even against medium hull rails.

I have two accounts that use Smoky and I do just fine with it. I use the +impact alteration more than half the time. But my point remains: overall Tanki has moved to more damage generated/second in a typical battle. They've boosted the damage of many weapons (fire/shaft/Isida) but mostly they have added massive splash damage to the game. in the same time period smoky has seen its sustained DPS chipped away at two or three times.

As you said to be good with a Smoky you not only have to aim at and hit the enemy tank with each shot, yo have to hit a specific spot on the enemy tank. And if you miss one of those you are likely to die. in contrast I have killed four enemy tanks with two successive Striker missiles and  not one of them was visible to me at the time they died. It's really hard to say Smoky has kept up in the damage department.

Splash damage = self damage.

I run up the face of thunders and strikers all the time and make them die from the self damage.

Smoky has much higher damage per second than splash damage weapons, so you can easily beat them one on one.

I wouldn't recommend the impact force alteration. It lowers your damage per second, which means it takes 1 more shot to kill an enemy - not worth it.

Use mines against fire/freeze/isida, it helps a lot.

Shafts are irritating, but very vulnerable when they are not camping.

They tend to stay back, so you can take the points with a DA.

Smoky is pretty good. It offers you a very attacking gameplay.

With splash damage weapons, there is always the risk of self damage.

It is easy now to win 1 vs 1 against twins if he doesn't have the splash removal alteration. Just run into their face, and they self destruct pretty fast.

If you watched the lord of points finals, I saw only 1 splash damage weapon in 1 game in 1 side only, out of 5 or 6 games.

And smoky was used in both sides in all the games.

They are pros - they know the self damage is not worth it.

There wasn't a single vulcan too btw, because overheating = self damage

Well, that's only if you know that the next shot will kill them

That's only because they can join battles against players that arent as well equipped as them. I dont think that's considered to be "professional"

Isn't that alteration more of a trolling device?
