I like the Viking and use it, but it has some disadvantages that are going to outweigh the advantages for most people.  It's understandable.

The Viking is one of the heavy tanks.  The maps do not accommodate it well.  Ramps and alleys are generally too narrow for easy movement leading to precious seconds lost correcting for running into things or even turning around.  The narrow ramps make it every bit as easy to flip as a wasp without the advantage of being able to turn itself back over.

It is slow and big, meaning that it is practically impossible to dodge incoming fire.

It does not have much torque and can barely push a wasp around.

It has no firepower advantage over smaller, faster tanks to offset the lack of speed or maneuverability, which gives smaller tanks a large advantage in battles with room to maneuver.    (speed + maneuverability = armor)  It can be one shotted by a drugged rail gun or thunder on a wasp which completely negates the armor advantage.

For a heavy tank, it sure gets knocked around a lot by incoming fire.

It is pretty useless on large maps where it must traverse long distances as a large slow target under enemy fire to get to the fight.  It is also useless on small maps where small fast tanks can close quickly.

These problems mean that it is not an all around tank adaptable to every situation.  I generally do well with it by loosely doing the following:

1.  Stay away from the middle of the action.  It's horrible in the middle of a scrum where you can't turn and maneuver fast enough to keep up with things.

2.  Stay away from large maps and very small ones.  The Viking is only good at middle distance and will get creamed otherwise.

3.  Play the edges  and other positions where you'll survive pot shots long enough to take out shafts and get opportunity hits on other unwary tanks and  be able to use your armor to your advantage in one on one battles.

4.  In CTF it can effectively delay several tanks from pursuit of a flag bearer.

5.  Focus on shafts.  If they're too far away, don't play that map.  If it's not sitting still you probably aren't going to kill it.  The Viking isn't all that great tracking moving targets and it can't really pursue.

6.  It is Ok, but not great at camping with the flag to protect it.  It is easily flanked and doesn't have the armor or firepower to fend off multiple tanks.

7.  Take opportunity shots whenever possible.  You never know when you'll get the kill shot and in team games, you're weakening the enemy for someone else to kill.

You are talking about Viking M1.

You are talking about Viking M1.

So true. :D

For the record para_cw, viking is a medium tank. Not a heavy tank. It is an all-purpose platform that pairs fairly well with any turret. I also find that going into the fray guns-a-blazin' with viking can be effective. If you have a strong gun, you don't need speed, and the extra health means you're alive longer to deal more damage. Speed does not always = armor. Take noise for example. If I jump from the red side into the blue base for a flag, my speed is instantly cut down. If there are a lot of enemies, you're going to take a ton of damage. That's why I prefer my viking over my hornet.

i am thinking what to buy on the sale hornet or viking? i normaly use shaft but i want to try freeze so which should i buy ? can it help me when it is m3?

Personally, I would take viking. I used shaft viking exclusively from the time I got them at M0 till lieutenant colonel. I have found it to be a phenomenal combo. Vikings speed and health allows you to change sniping positions in a reasonable time, while still being able to take a few hits. Combined with Vikings low profile, you will be a menace to the enemy team.

I have also heard that freeze-viking was a very good combo. Indeed, I have seen it used several times. It is not a combo to mess with. Vikings health combined with freezes stopping power is lethal. If you get caught by it, it doesn't even matter that the freeze is on viking. Plus, Vikings extra health allows it to tank a few more hits than hornet. This combo would make you a killer base defender. If that isn't your style, this combo also has applications in mid-field, and offensive roles.

Underrated hulls (no particular order):

Wasp- M2 Wasps are very rare.

Hunter- M1 and M2 Hunters are rare.

Dictator-M1 Dictators are rare, M2 Dictators are somewhat rare.

Titan- I've seen VERY few M2 Titans.

eh.

Not Dictator.

Hunter is not that rare.

Slightly overrated; I defeat M3-M3 with M2-M2 Smoky Viking most of the time, but I have Rustle :)

I go toe-to-toe with M2-M2 Thunder Viking and its always really close. I have slightly Mu'ed Corrosion.

Should I get M1 Viking or M1 Hornet? If I get M1 Viking, I can use it with M1 Smoky and maybe M1 Isida. If I get M1 Hornet, I can use it with Isida and Smoky, and M1 Hornet has good speed.

I agree, to Getting The hornet + it sound's like you want the hornet, but you're thinking That the hornet will be less defense.

But still i would take hornet and then viking... Simply Because hornet is my favorite Hull, it has speed. Agility, and force against other hulls.

at some points.. it does :)

Just traded my Wasp for the Viking, awesome hull has good defense and can move quick enough if you pick up a boost pack. I don't care much for the look of the Dictator.

Right now I am using fire m1 - if the holiday sale would hurry up I want to grab a few new turrets to expand my game play.

I am thinking isida, or freeze they are quickest to m2 from my current rank

Next year I will be fighting at least the whole of January with my alt. account @Smok-Ti-Thun

(want to rank faster that month so I 'll get a discounted SMP pass)

Let 's meet in a battle: would like to meet the "TankiIsGoingDown" guy!

I bring Viking M2 (easy kill for you) - Thunder M2 and let us both take a non-protective paint.

Send you already a friend request.

See you in January I hope! :)
