Members should be allowed to delete their own posts on the forum

I'm posting this on Feedback but first, I want controversial opinions on it.

Here's the Feedback link, by the way: http://feedback.tankionline.com/topic/211856-/

I posted an idea regarding members being allowed to post on the Complaints section of the forum on my alt but I thought of a more reasonable idea; members should be allowed to delete their own posts on the forum.

It would be great for when you accidentally post something you originally wanted to post in another thread. What currently happens now is that, when said situation happens, it's usually irrelevant which can make threads go off-topic and even start petty pathetic arguments. If we were able to delete our own posts, this problem would vanish. I acknowledge that's there already the option of modifying posts but at some points, people may not really know about a particular topic which means they won't be able to edit the post with something relevant. That's another problem that would vanish. It can't be abused due to the fact that if a troll deletes his own post in, he can't get it back. That therefore puts said thread back to normal. FBI has confirmed JForum will have this option so when a post is deleted, anyone who quotes will still have said post there.

You lose the ability to post when you're banned; no one will be able to hide the fact that they're banned that way.

Having this can actually help for contests too; on some contests, if you make an irrelevant post, you get disqualified immediately. So, with this idea in place, then you can delete your post before trouble arises.

Let's summarise what I've just said here:

Pros:

  • Will be able to delete self-made posts that are irrelevant.
  • Will be able to delete self-made posts without thinking of a modification.
  • Prevents off-topic posts.
  • Prevents petty pathetic arguments.
  • Cannot be abused properly.

Cons:

I actually can't think of any! If there is any I've missed then I'l add them here; even so, the pros should outweigh the cons.

What do you think of this idea? What can you do to help make this idea better? Give it a +1 if you like it! Vote it up on the Feedback link too!

I think we should be allowed to delete our posts because I usually see people posting things by accident and they have to write: "deleted." into their posts.
Idea liked.

Hopefully JForum will have this option

That was the old forum. The current one is IPS. Yes, it has this option, but that doesn't mean it'll get implemented for sure.

Cons:

I actually can't think of any!

Well I will.

  • Trolling - you say something, someone answers, then you delete it and the first person looks bad
  • Many people will decide to delete ALL their posts, then change their name and that way act as another person.
  • That way when you get banned and a mod edits the post, you'll be able to delete it and hide the fact you've been banned.
  • etc

But then you can limit it.

Make rules saying u cannot delete mod edits

Yeah, of course.

If a person deletes a post, a shadow post should leave left in its tracks saying "blablabla has deleted his post," which therefore makes the other person NOT look like an ***** as you thought.

Also, what makes you think many people will delete every single one of their posts and then fork over 100 000 crystals to change their name; that's just idiotic and out of the ordinary.

And when you're banned, the ability to delete your post gets disabled; it's possible since they're in a different usergroup.

I'm gonna extend the original post now; thanks for the potential cons, FBI.

If that happens then deleting posts gets pointless. From what I understood, you want this option mostly to stop posts saying 'deleted'. Well, if you see a topic full of 'shadows' saying post was deleted, wouldn't it be the same?

What makes me think this is that many people have requested it. Last guy was a month ago, he wanted all his posts removed. And since Mods' job isn't to respond to stupid requests, they created this

Smart.

However, I'm not talking for the time you're banned. You get banned today for a week. Next week you come and delete your post which says you've been banned. That was my point.

You're welcome.

Good point.

But remember that it's only the last 50 posts and you have to be a good forumer in order to do so and there has to be a good reason for it; mods will use their strict discretion on that. And besides, tell me what's wrong with acting as another person again? (Providing it's a good forumer-type-of-person) Especially if they were bad before; I don't see the issue with turning over a new leaf.

Aren't all bans recorded in the ban log? If it's not like that now, it should be. And also, can't mods see the "karma," thing on members so staff will be able to know if a person is banned.

Thanks again, FBI.

Yep so...?

Someone with 1 - 2k posts, deletes them all, changes his name and comes back. Noone knows who he is. In my opinion that's not fair to players.

It's not about Staff, it's easy for them. One of the effects of the bans is other people see what they must not do. It's good to stay like that, if players start deleting the proof they were banned, then others won't see people are getting banned at all and will start breaking rules themselves

They're not exactly going to say yes to deleting 50 posts at a time unless there's a good reason. The staff aren't the most lenient guys in the world.

I don't really see that to be valid; if he wants to be elusive, that's his problem, not ours.

That way, they get banned and then they learn their lesson accordingly. Not to mention, most of the stuff that's not allowed is obvious. Plus, you Staff tell us to check the rules very often so there's no excuse for them to be thinking "oh, this is allowed,"

Now, you've posted mostly valid cons, some of which can be counteracted, some which can't.

Because of this, I think that the option should be open for a week, gather some results and take it from there (regarding whether it should be permanent) like with the reputation thing. I don't think we can assume that people will definitely use it in the wrong way; most people thought that with the reputation but look what happened!

We'll need several months till all the people get used to this rule. Meanwhile, mods will have much work with banning people that do that.

Dude suppose you can only erase your last 50 posts. Don't you mods have a hard time being asked to delete it?

P.S. Congrats on your 10k post

Well. You do? No? Then leave it.

I couldn't leave it because it is pointless to brag in general; especially for something so stupid..
