These are just basic pointers towards playing a decent CTF match with your team. If you're reading this, chances are you already know everything listed below.

Observe and Communicate

The first and
most important step is to observe. Whether you are starting a battle from the very beginning, or joining a battle that's been going on for a while, take the time to see what's going on. We can't always properly communicate with the team we are on, seeing as 7 out of 10 players are Russian; but give it a shot either way, it's always worth it in the long run.

Here are some key things you want to be informed about in the battle:

  • Is the other team using supplies? If so, how many players? How often?
  • Does your team have players who are willing to use supplies in return? How many? How often?
  • What is the most powerful aspect of your opponents? The camper Shafts? The Isida that never stops using supplies?
  • What is your team's most powerful aspect? Do they have more of one weapon than others?
  • How many attackers does your team have? How many defenders?
  • Do you have Isidas who can support your defenders and/or attackers if need be?

The worst thing you can do is just throw yourself at your opponents as often as you can, and hope that sooner or later you'll get the flag. It works for some people, but then luck is the biggest factor, not your skill or coordination. If you want to win the battle, you need to have control.

Decide

Now that you've gathered some basic information, you are ready to make some decisions.

  • If you have lots of attackers, you are probably more needed at base where you can support them (with long range) and still watch your base. Granted, defense may not be everybody's play style, but it's more worth it than losing your flag. Otherwise see if someone else is willing to watch the base while you attack, if you firmly believe you're more skilled in attacking.

  • What weapons does your team lack? Maybe everyone is a freeze, and are constantly being picked of by the shafts and railguns. Maybe you only have long range, and getting to the flag is impossible with all the short-range fast-reload defenders. Yes, we all have our primary combination, or our highest upgrade. But some team combinations will do better with a M1 Mammoth Thunder, rather than an M2 Hornet Freeze, so choose accordingly.

  • What weapons are your opponents rich in? Use a paint that will keep you safer from that weapon. Maybe you like Forester, but Lava will be better if your opponents are abundant in freezes. Even if it makes the slightest of difference, you'll notice it in the long run.

Coordinate

Even if you can't communicate with your team, there are things you can do
on your own to coordinate with your team.

  • Which way do your attackers prefer? Usually each game has a certain "flow" to it. The attackers are used to attacking one way, and that's the way they always go. Learn to complement them with your game-play. Sometimes it's better to go the same way in one bunch to support each other. At other times it's better to come from different sides. For example, while your primary attacker is running with the flag, and being chased by all the defenders, you can sneak around from the other side. When they kill him and return the flag, you will be there, waiting to pick it up with no one to stop you, and ride to base. This happened to me more than once, but it requires observation and coordination.

  • Maybe there is a defending rail who is effectively decreasing the opponents health, but doesn't have enough reload time to finish them off, and dies much too often. Grab your freeze, and take turns killing your opponents. Some weapons paired up make amazing, almost unbeatable combinations.

  • Find your team's weak spot (yes, there always is one) and fill it. Learn to rely on your team - it's not a Death Match after all. If you can't play CTF with your team, don't it play at all.

Don't hog the flag

One of the worst things you can do (which annoys me very much) is hogging the flag. If you brought back a flag, and yours is stolen, don't just sit and wait. If you brought the flag, you are an effective attacker, so leave the flag with your defenders and go get your flag back. We all want the extra points and crystals, I get that, but you are risking losing a flag all together, which will only make things worse for you.

When people see that teamwork is on the forefront of your mind, and you aren't selfish, they will start trusting you and your team
will become more powerful. Next time they'll give you the flag in stead, knowing that you deserve it.

What's even worse is when your own teammates are
trying to stop you from bringing the flag to base. How insane is that? They'd rather you die so they get the flag, then score a flag for the team. It's absurd!

Of course at times
when your team is significantly ahead, and losing a flag or two isn't such a big deal, you can stand to hog a few flags to get extra points. But even then, why not give it to a younger member who is having a hard time keeping up with you?

Don't hog kills

Killing your opponents is a team effort and nobody likes (put lightly) the guy who steals kills. Share your bounty with your team, and they will likewise share with you.

It's even worse to see those people who will
wait for their teammates to die trying to kill an opponent, and then finishing them off just so they can get the kill. What kind of gameplay is that? If you finish off others' kills, then sometimes help them out and let them get their share.

Of course if you don't care about winning the game, or about winning the fund, then just go ahead, be rude, steal all the kills and flags, and level yourself with the noobs that do the same.

Good Job. Very well written. This should be put in the FAQ.

I do that very often, although I earn exp fast.
