Tanki Online - general gameplay issues/feedback

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm fairly new to Tanki Online and enjoying it a lot - I've noticed a couple technical issues which annoyed me and could use some improvent, so I'll just share my two cents here:

---

*In a regular deathmatch mode (free for all), the players will often respawn near each other. This is fine in team modes, but is annoying in regular deathmatch because it means players may respawn in a bad place where they (or another player) have no fair chance to avoid being killed.

*In deathmatch modes, if a player commits suicide (hits DEL, or drives off the map) then there's no penalty. This leads to players who are near death purposely driving off the edge of the map just to avoid giving their opponent(s) a kill. The game should be tweaked so that if a player commits suicide they lose 1 kill. (I'm not sure about implementing this in a team match though - because it could lead to trolls joining a team, and purposely suiciding themselves over and over to bring down the team's score).

*Some of the maps (ex. Iran) don't have actual cliffs or ledge texture at the edge of the map, the map graphics just cut off into a void, which looks really sloppy. All of the maps should either have cliffs at the edge of the map, or walls that block the edge of the map so that it looks aesthetically proper. Also, when you fall off the edge of certain maps, if you look up underneath the map area, you won't see any texture - just empty space - the underside of the maps should also be filled in with texture.

*One thing I dislike is that once a player is ranked high enough, they're ineligible to play matches against lower ranked players. This could mean that the higher your rank goes, the fewer players you have to play against. I thin there should be an option to create a match open to all ranks. In addition, I think you should be able to use lower marked-versions of the weapons/hulls even after you've purchased the upgraded ones. This would allow more experienced players who have a hard time finding many similar-ranked players. to play a fair match against lower-ranked players using lower ranked weapons/hulls.

*One odd thing I noticed - on the "Moon Silence" map, there's an ambient background music. As far as I know it's the only map which has any music, and it's a little too loud and annoying to me. If there was a way to turn off background music in maps without turning off all the sound, or adjust the sound/music volume, that would be great.

Deathmatch mode. They don't have to have a penalty mode, since why thunder self destructs?

Iran Map. Why care about the graphics out of the map? you are playing inside.

Rank Requirements. There are battles, Generallissimo to Recruit, only made by chat moderators.

Background Music. Go on settings, you find a button called Enable Background Music. Turn that off, you should be able to hear only tank sounds.

Hope this answers your question.

The Iran map is made with no walls so that it looks like it goes out into eternity, like a desert. I don't know how your monitor displays it, but on mine it really does look like the desert never ends. Multiple times I fell off just because I didn't see the edge.

I don't know which servers you play on, but S1 and S2 are full of high rankers. And I mean full. If you check the poll on the front page, you are right - there are a lot more small ranks than high, but there are still plenty to play against. The rank differences have been adjusted over the years, being tweaked to relative perfection. The reason Gns don't play against Pvts is because that is a sort of power leveling. You kidding? With M3 weapons you will OK every rank below WO1. At times there is exception, like FS said.

Settings and mute, which you know:

Well Iran wasn't the best example actually. Maps like Brest and Red Alert are probably much better examples.

Here's what I mean - the maps just cut off into space w/o any texture. there should be a cliff/wall texture on the outside (and on the bottom too).

PS. Thanks for the tip about the background music btw

Tbh, I'm concentrating more on winning, than what the outside of the map looks like..

The problem is that it's blatantly visible throughout the game, not just on the rare event that you fall over the edge.gPolish and presentation is very important, and I don't see any technical limitations that'd prevent simply filling in the edges with texture.

Sure gameplay may be a bigger issue in the long run, but hypothetically if the gameplay was the same, but the graphics were just stick figures drawn in MS paint, this would rightfully be an annoyance. A game doesn't have to have state of the art graphics to be fun (I still enjoy a lot of early-mid 90s games), but presentation is part of what makes the game enjoyable (even if the graphics aren't technically the best) - if it looks amateurish or full of graphical bugs or sloppiness then it does hurt the fun factor and reminds you that you're just playing a slightly-unfinished game, rather than commanding a tank.

That's not what I meant sorry. What I suggesting is to allow players to use lower-mark weapons/hulls even after they've purchased better ones, and allow matches that are divided by weapon/hull class instead of rank (ex. matches which allow M0-M1 weapons/hulls only)

This'd mean that if a Generalissimo wanted to play against a rookie, they could do it as long as they were playing a match which only allowed M0 or M1 weapons/hulls, so it wouldn't be statistically unbalanced. In addition to that, another interesting idea would be to give players more xp if they're using lower-ranked weapons/hulls (Ex. If a player could choose to use a M1 Armor/hull, and destroys a player with an M2 armor/hull, then he gets more experience from the kill than if he was using an M2 armor/hull).

I totally agree with that, it's awesome. Suggest in feedback?
