[Issue 17] Aojsd's Garage Analysis

After Lham, Raphael, and Hog all published their garages in previous issues, it is now my turn.

I’ll just run through some of the important choices I made before the rebalance. When I was WO5, my favorite combo by far was Thunder and Viking M3 along with Emerald paint, which in retrospect was definitely not the best paint that I could’ve bought. I also commonly played with Hornet M3 back then. However later I had gone through some stuff in real life which forced me to quit playing tanki for an unknown amount of time, which brings me to the most important part of this analysis, what I bought after the rebalance.

Rank: Second Lieutenant

So I had gotten bored of whatever games I had been playing, which led me to the thought, “What if I started playing Tanki again?”, and so I did. I logged in to find that all of my crystals had been both refunded and multiplied by ten to come to a total sum of about a million crystals. I was a Second Lieutenant back then, and my first thoughts left me very excited. I would be able to get all of the good weapons and hulls I had back then, except that this time I’d get a much better paint and save crystals in the process! And so, being the young immature tanker I am, I immediately bought Thunder, Ricochet, Hornet, and Viking and upgraded them to the maximum possible while completely ignoring the new statistics of all of the weapons. I then used some of my extra crystals to buy and upgrade Freeze, Shaft, and Isida to the maximum possible, along with the paints Electra and Python. This left me with Freeze, Hornet, and Isida M2, and Viking, Ricochet, Thunder, and Shaft M1. For me, all this buying turned out to be a bad idea.

Freeze M2

Rating: 9/10

I started liking this weapon immediately once I started using it. It had a high DPS and decent range for a close range weapon, I could easily destroy isidas without taking any damage, and the freezing effect was invaluable for catching flag carriers.

Hornet M2

Rating: 9/10

Fast, small, easy to use, I loved this hull before the rebalance, and I loved it when I started using it again after. It’s a great tank for flag-capturing, it has decent stability, and it fits with almost every weapon. It soon became the main hull that I used.

Python

Rating: 8/10

This paint was very effective, its high Freeze protection was incredibly helpful whenever I tried to capture flags, and its Shaft protection was just enough to protect my Hornet from being destroyed by fully charged M1 Shaft. It receives a high rating from me, although its description is a bit disturbing…

Thunder M1:

Rating: 7.5/10

I loved this gun before the rebalance, and I also enjoyed it after. I found thunder pretty effective, but not quite as effective as my Freeze. At first I wasn't too skilled at using it, and it was annoying to fight against higher ranked players who were using Thunder M2, which is much better than Thunder M1. Also, I wasn't skilled enough to be able to force Railguns to miss their shots. But Thunder was still a fun weapon to use, and upgrading it in the future was definitely something I was planning.

Isida m2:

Rating: 6.5/10

This gun was relatively fun and very useful for gaining large amounts of experience, however it just didn’t fit my playing style. I quickly got bored of healing people. Also, I really enjoyed being on the front lines of the attack, but without using supplies, I would either be stuck defending the base or healing those that were attacking and often sacrificing myself to let them get away and take full credit for the captured flag.

Viking M1:

Rating: 5.5/10

A decent hull, but for the most part it didn’t fit with my favorite playing style, attacking. Also, looking at its stats in the future, I was disappointed in the fact that it was no longer the incredible hull I had been using before. It was no longer arguably the best hull that could fit with any gun in any situation.

Electra:

Rating: 5/10

Yes, this paint was rather effective against other Isidas, but that was it, and I often didn’t find myself being attacked by other Isidas compared to Freezes and Shafts. It looked pretty nice, but for the most part, that was all it had. If I could go back in time, I would not have bought this paint.

Shaft M1:

Rating: 4/10

For a bit, shaft was fun, however the large drop in damage in proportion to the health of all of the hulls made it somewhat disappointing in my opinion. It wasn’t fun to have to wait for one of my teammates to attack a medium or heavier hull before I could steal the kill, and the turning speed was agonizing. I used it for a while, but after multiple bad performances, I dropped this weapon.

Ricochet M1:

Rating: 3.5/10

Immediately when I started using it, something felt wrong. It was as if I was it was taking much longer for me to destroy medium and heavy tanks. After doing some research, I found that my suspicions were correct, the amount of shots it could make on a full charge had been largely reduced. Discouraged because of ricochet no longer being the overpowered weapon I loved before the rebalance, I stopped using this. I was too lazy to try to learn how to use it properly.

Rank: First Lieutenant

Before reaching this rank, I had not planned on buying any new equipment. Most of the time I was just using my Hornet M2/Freeze M2 combo on any map in battles that fit my rank well. Occasionally I would use Viking whenever I decided that I felt more inclined to playing defense than attacking.

Railgun M2:

Rating: 9/10

What led me to make this decision was a battle on Kungur. I was playing with my trusty Hornet M2/Freeze M2 combo when I found that I kept on getting picked off by enemy Railguns on the bridge that my team seemed to be unable to get rid of. After getting destroyed many more times, I left the battle, annoyed. My extreme hatred of the weapon then led me to think of how good it could be if I decided to buy it. And so I did, and I was most definitely impressed. The ability to snipe like shaft while still having a wide range of view was ultimately what I loved most about it. I still use this amazing weapon now.

Ricochet M2:

Rating: 5.5/10

After being disappointed in its performance at M1, I took pity on it and decided to upgrade it and give it another chance. Obviously it was much better, however I still despised its shortened charge life. Also, it simply didn't fit my playing style. My style at the time involved going around the sides of maps to stealthily pick off defenders before running off with the flag. With weapons like Thunder and Freeze I could do that. Freeze had a great DPS and Thunder's splash damage could take out multiple defenders at once. However when using Ricochet, the charge life only lasted long enough to destroy 1-2 defenders before I started shooting very slowly. The bouncing effect was useful sometimes, but in the maps I played, and in many maps, There weren't many areas to bounce the plasma balls to hit enemies when I was in the enemy base. Finally, Ricochet was not really the best weapon with Hornet. It could be very hard to control my tank at times due to Ricochet's recoil, and I did not have the motivation nor the commitment to slowly try to get more skilled using a weapon I did not enjoy.

Rank: Captain

Ranking to captain came with the unlocking of some very useful upgrades and paints. Most notably, Thunder M2.

Thunder M2:

Rating: 10/10

Finally, after being forced to only watch the awesomeness of Thunder M2, I was able to upgrade my Thunder M1. To put it simply, this was absolutely amazing! The increased damage and firing rate was great, as well as the increased splash range. Also, now I could destroy M1 and M2 Hornets in only two shots, depending on their paints, at a medium-small distance instead of the three shots it took before. I started using this much more often, and I like to say that I got much more skilled with it as well. Overall, it was a much improved version of a weapon that I already enjoyed using very much. In fact, I still use it now.

Sandstone:

Rating: 8.5/10

This paint was very effective when I first used it. It had a tiny bit more Shaft protection than Python, almost as much Thunder protection as corrosion, a very good amount of protection from Railgun, and a small amount of protection from Twins. It wasn’t the best in its looks, but as a protective paint, it did its job.

Rank: Major

At this point I had only been using light hulls, and I wasn’t too excited to get a new one. However, the increasing amount of pestering advice from some friends lead me to buy another hull, as well as a paint that I had been wanting to buy since a few ranks earlier.

Mammoth M2
Rating: 9/10

My friend was correct, Mammoth did go excellently with Thunder. It was great in defense, and the extra health certainly brought up my D/L. When drugging, it was and is nearly unstoppable. In later ranks, its drug war capability was worth it, as I started playing in battles with a friend who used supplies very often, and I was also able to do well in those battles due to this hull. I still use this hull today sometimes.

Firebird M2

Rating: 9/10

This thing is awesome, it has high DPS, the burning effect is great, and it works extremely well in attacking, including thawing a frozen flag carrier. Believe it or not, I had started to get bored of using Thunder and Railgun, mainly because I wasn't skilled enough to use more of their potential. When I started using Firebird, it took some experience to be able to calculate how much fuel to use on different tanks, but after that the performance was great. Combined with my relatively fast Hornet, I could attack very well, destroying defenders before they could process where I was going and then taking the flag and running back to my base. The only downsides of it would be that it takes a while to reload, although that can be dealt with, it doesn’t work very well in drug wars, and in maps where there isn’t much room for being stealthy, such as Silence, it isn’t as effective.

Rustle

Rating: 9/10

This paint rocks! It has the same amount of Thunder protection as Cedar, which is very useful considering the fact that thunder is my main weapon, as well as some very useful protection against Freeze and Isida. The main problem was that I had been only using Sandstone up until this point, and the lack of protection from both Railgun and Shaft was a little discouraging at first. However in the long run, this lack of protection may have benefited how I played. I no longer recklessly drove out into the open knowing I would survive at least one shot. I had to be more careful. I was forced to learn how to fake out Railguns and play mind games with Shafts. It taught me to be more patient, and after I learned that, the extra protection against Thunder, Freeze, and Isida was very useful.

Rank: Lieutenant Colonel

At last, a rank in which I did not buy anything. During this rank I just spent time increasing my skills and earning crystals, nothing happened garage-wise. I spent a large majority of my time during this rank using either Firebird or Railgun with Hornet. I didn't start using Thunder again until the last fourth of the rank, when I bought a few supplies kits and started playing in more drug wars. Firebird didn't have a long enough charge for these, and Railgun wasn't very effective due to its low damage per minute, so the other choice was Thunder. Thunder performed exceptionally well in these drug wars, its splash damage was invaluable many times. It was then that I started using Thunder more often in normal battles on Hornet, which caused me to wonder how I ever felt bored with this weapon before. Against players without protective paints it was very deadly, and even against those with paints it was still quite effective. My improvements on shooting the sides of tanks to force Railguns and some other weapons to miss helped get me interested in Thunder again as well. I ranked up to Colonel with Thunder and Hornet as my favorite combo when not using large quantities of supplies.

Rank: Colonel

I had been very excited to reach this rank, it came with the unlocking of one of my favorite garage items. I proceeded to buy it immediately after my ranking party—which was awesome by the way, it was a double rank party, you should’ve been there :P.

Wasp M2:

Rating: 10/10

This hull is awesome in so many ways. First and foremost, it’s amazing speed. Sacrificing less than 5 health compared to Hornet M2 in return for a speed increase of more than 2, Wasp M2’s speed is intoxicating. The stability is only a minor downside, and can be quickly taken care of after some practice, as well as the use of a recoil weapon such as Thunder. One of Wasp’s truly amazing aspects is its ability to bounce when driving and then decelerating very quickly, allowing a user to increase or decrease their firing angle by a large amount. This is currently my favorite hull, and I don't see this judgment changing in the near future.

M3s for the Future

Thunder M3

Light M3 Kit

Viking M3

Railgun M3

Firebird M3

Mammoth M3

Currently I have quite a few M2 weapons and three M2 hulls, but it is pretty clear though that I’m lacking a decent medium hull. Therefore after I buy Thunder M3 and the Light M3 kit, I’ll focus on upgrading my Viking. From there, I’ll start saving up for another good paint other than Zeus. Depending on what I need, it could range from Inferno, Prodigi, Rock, or even Picasso, although the latter ones could take a considerable amount of time. After that, it becomes a simple matter of saving up to upgrade all of my favorite weapons, such as Railgun and Firebird, to M3.

And so ends the garage analysis of a rising colonel. I thank you very much for reading, and I wish you luck in your future garage choices. If you have any feedback, please tell me, I would be more than willing to consider your opinions. With these last words, I bid you farewell.

Pfft. Isida M2 deals enough damage to be an awesome attacker without drugs, and Electra is just beautiful - who cares what protections it has? :P

Good job, a well-written analysis.

Intresting for my future, I still like rico and I don't think it's that bad.

If you use the walls and learn other skills, it's not that bad.

Anyway, nice article!

...

Is Rico that bad? Because I was thinking of purchasing it. Seems decent at M2 above as is and it'll be better after the new physics.

Just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's bad ;) Also rico will be improved in the new physics.

I know that ok

Just that you've given Rico a low rating so when I said "Is Rico that bad?" I meant "Is Rico that bad in your eyes"
