Tanki's "Mip-Mapping" Option

 Share

Recommended Posts

Tanki has a little option in the options panel to turn off something called "Mip Mapping".  To my knowledge, mip-mapping is the decreasing of textures resolutions as distance increases, to help increase FPS. But as this option is turned off, everything becomes pixelated.

I think Tanki may have the terms Mip-Mapping and Anti-Aliasing confused. Anti-Aliasing is what is used to make stuff look less pixelized, which does generally  slow down graphics. Does Tanki actually have Mip-Mapping or is that option simply just a mis-named Anti-Aliasing option?

Anti aliasing is the removal of jagged edges

Mip-Maping main purpose is to make objects work with  perspective

So while mip-maping does help with anti=aliasing, its main purpose is perspective

Ahh, so the Mip-mapping is having an Antialiasing effect on distant texures.

What's the antialiasing doing though, nothing seems to change when I toggle it. (I know what it's supposed to do, but I don't see any jagged edges change.)

Graphics are slightly less detailed, and things look less smooth when turned off (edges of your tank seems to be the most obvious one)

Though, there's no big difference to me either, because I mainly play with mip-mapping on only.

With Dynamic shadows enabled, antialiasing becomes a more important difference in graphics.

I Don't see the difference either? ^

Look at the bottom edges of the hornet. When disabled, it's a little jagged.

I always turn Mip-mapping off. I like it jagged, not smooth. If it's smooth, it's uncomfortable. :P

:P :D
