[Issue 19] YouTube Lesson: Basics

Recommended Posts

It is already 2014! You may want to make some good resolutions. What about sharing your games, skills and ideas to the rest of the world? YouTube is the place to do that. You can quickly upload videos and show them to your friends, on the world's second biggest search engine. But what you have no clue on how to do this? After almost two years uploading videos, I'll give you some tips until you become fully satisfied with what you can do.

So, first of all, you need a YouTube channel. For that, you need a Google account, so create an account or log in. I would use an account only for Tanki, so you don't mix up real life and Tanki Online. Now that you have an account, you are ready to publish your first video! Well it is not made yet... Let's now see how to make a video!

You need an idea. What kind of video do you want to make?
You can choose several types of videos to have an entertaining and large channel. Just choose what fits you best! You can do some gameplay videos (example), or if you are fond of parkouring you can upload your most epic parkour (example), you can also choose to record the game each time there is a gold box notification, so you can do a montage! (example) If you prefer to give advice

to others you can also review parts of your garage in order to convince people! (example)

In each case, you need to record your screen. How to do that? Well, firstly, you should try out a free recorder which doesn't require any download, screencast-o-matic. I've used this one between 2012 and November 2013, and it is incredibly effective. Just go to screencast-o-matic.com and click "Start Recording"! It will open a new window, you will be able to crop the recording zone and select if you want to record sound coming from your mic or not. It is quicker to use if you download it, you don't have to go to the site each time you want to record a video. You can also use better quality programs, but you'll need to pay them. I recommend Fraps which I actually use, as it has a perfect recording quality and it can record sounds from your computer, unlike screencast-o-matic. (Check out)

I'm sure that you don't need help to record the video itself - it is easy.
After recording, you have the video stored somewhere on your computer. Now you need to upload it on YouTube.
Make sure you're signed into your account. To the left of your username, you'll find a link called "Upload." Click on that.
A new window will pop up and will let you select a file from your computer. Select your video and click the "Choose" button.
The video will start to upload and you'll see its progress as well as a bunch of other options. Make sure you do not close this page until the video has finished uploading or it will not finish.

While the video is uploading, you can change the name, add a description, enter tags, and fill out other relevant information.
You should add a catchy title, containing "Tanki Online". My layout for Tanki videos is "Tanki Online - title of the video". Make sure to have a title which gives a good preview of what the viewers will see, or they won't want to watch your video. For example, instead of "tanki gameplay", you should write "Tanki Online - Ricochet M3/Viking M3 Gameplay in Silence CTF + Gold Box!". The description is not as important, but it should contain important keywords, so your video is easily promoted by YouTube. Often, you won't have an idea when you'll have to fill in the description. Make it more personal than the title! Here is an example by @Valletta, whose channel is here:

"While re-doing my videos I still spend some time playing, duh! :D
In this video I... am not quite sure what the heck I'm doing. Co-starring Raphael2 - subscribe to him here!

♦ Comment, rate and subscribe - it is much appreciated!
♦ Stalk me on twitter:

♦ Be a fellow tankman: http://zti.me/mwJ
♦ Stalk me on facebook: http://zti.me/stA
♦ YouTubers' Forum! - http://youtube.prophpbb.com"

As you see, he has included Calls to Action. That's vital, most people won't like, subscribe or comment if they are not asked to.
Once it reaches 100%, you'll see a link at the top of the screen that you can click to view your video. Congratulations, you've just uploaded your first Tanki video! Now that you know how it works, you should have no trouble doing it again and again.

Okay, you've uploaded a video. I'm already hearing you saying "But... Why don't I have any views after 10 hours? :(". Let me answer: nothing is given easily. You'll have to share it. It is a Tanki video, right? Then, share it to the source! First, how to publish a video on the Forum? Check out this guide by @FederalBureauFBI: How to post a video.

A list of topics in which you can share your video without being flooding the forum:
Your Recent Gameplay!
Discussion of turrets and hulls (in the appropriate topic)
Creativity
Gold Boxes! (if it is a gold box video)
English Community Parkour  (if it is a parkour video)

If the upload time is too long, more than 45 minutes, I recommend you to use Handbrake, in order to reduce the size of your video. It is free and can be downloaded here (handbrake.fr). When you'll first launch the program, you might be scared by the complex interface. DON'T RUN AWAY. I'll support you. So, firstly, you need to click on "Source", then select "Video File" and choose your video. Now, select the destination file by clicking "Browse". Open the "Video" tab in order to select a quality factor, I use values between 18 and 24 (lower = higher quality = larger size)

We're done! You now know how to upload a video on YouTube! I hope that you are satisfied with yourself. In the next lesson, I'll teach you how to perfectly customize your channel and more!

Nice article and thanks for the link to the awesome screen recorder!

But I do have one question: in parkour videos and Question of the Week videos, they seem to have the camera unattached from a tank, so that they can move it anywhere. How do they do that?

Making videos is simple.. Editing is the most hard and complicated part, music and effects and etc..

However, well done on this thread.

Could you teach how to edit a video with the most suggested program in your opinion? Instead of customizing your channel, it's boring actually. Editing videos is what starters are looking for.

screencast only records sounds from your mic. So if you have earphones, unplug them so the mic records the music too :)

Can it be a program on that computer for music? Or it has to be outside the computer?

What I do is use Sony Vegas to add sound in the videos, but movie maker can do this aswell.

I've Bandicam as screen recorder, which records sound from your computer, I've you've set the volume to stereo mix; in audio options.

All you have to do is to add music, the battle sounds are from the video itself.

Render it, and you'll have music, both battle sound in your videos.

Unedited with those two audio types, is how I like videos, but this is just my opinion.
