Dear Tankers,

 

We're fortunate to have many different maps to choose from in Tanki Online. They offer some variety, and hopefully as time goes on, even more unique maps will be implemented. One problem I find though is rank limit. I know that rank limits are placed on maps not only to give Tanki players something to look forward to, as a reward for ranking up... but sometimes it can be very frustrating when your favorite map isnt unlocked until Brigadier or later! Honestly I think that some of the unpopular maps would actually be greatly enjoyed by lower ranked players if the rank limits were lowered. Rift is one example of a map which I think should be unlocked a tad bit earlier. Valley is another. Its constructed pretty well, and is a bit different from most maps you come across. Both would provide enjoyable gameplay, if only it were unlocked earlier so as to allow them to be more popular maps.

 

A second reason for a map to unlock late, is so that a player can develop more skill before being thrown into a more difficult and advanced map layout. Yes, this is good, but if no one plays these late unlocked maps (for the most part) to start with, then the map is essentially useless! Maybe the last unlocked map could be at Colonel. Then as an incentive to reach Generalissimo ranking, there could be a map unlocked only at Generalissimo as a final reward.

 

I actually think that most maps should be unlocked alot earlier, now that the 'crystals for ranking up' bonus has been put into place. See, before when we didn't receive crystals for ranking up, the only reward we got to look forward to was the unlocking of new maps, and equipment. Now that we get crystals to look forward to, I think it would be a bit safer to let some maps unlock earlier.

 

Clearly, the majority of maps that people play are really unlocked before Major. Anything past this (of course with a few exceptions) are for the most part left untouched. One reason for this could possibly be due to people in general liking what they are already accustom to. They like to play maps that they know their way around... and playing a map which unlocks late which is foreign to them is somewhat of a turn off because they feel out of place. It takes time to learn a map and appreciate all of its possibilities, and when a maps rank limit is set so high up, it really decreases the chance of it becoming a popular map, even if it is constructed to perfection.

 

This is why I believe a few maps should lower their rank limits.

1)  unanswered:  its good to have maps unlocking at different ranks and even after brigadier until may be field marshal at most.  But a revision of the current plan is needed.  e.g. rift used to be a popular map, but since it was made available only to high ranks, the map lost out on its popularity a lot.  Many high ranks don't play that map, many don't even know about it, so I think it'd be good to have such maps brought back to unlocking at mid level ranks like Lt. Colonel - Brigadier

 

2) Hells no !!!!  but not for the same reason as stated.  A few gissmos are good, great decent players, but most of them out there are total noobs, and if you're counting on them to fill in that map and make some real play, its not gonna happen with more than 60% of gissmos being noobs.

 

3) unanswered:  Quantity is good, its already here anyway, lets do with it.  On the other hand though, what we need is a few really good maps, newly designed from scratch with the latest props and new physics in mind and mostly cybersports in mind.  real PRO maps with interesting features, hideouts, flag escape routes, strategic location of certain buildings and drops, and spawn points far away from flag points and most of all,  if its gonna be a PRO map, please no more of that all flat surface nonesense ,, its a tank game, it should be rough (cough, yeah I like rough :p ) kinda like Massacre terrain in Osa .  Its a tank game after all

In reply to each point...

1) I like the idea of maps unlocking late... but the fact is that even if its a good map, again theres a very strong chance that it won't be played regardless of how perfect it is, because again people like playing maps they are familiar with. Maybe if the late late unlocked maps were small sized, rather than these huge unfamiliar territories, they would still be used sometimes. Field Marshal is a bit late though, currently there arent any maps that take that long to unlock. Courage is the last one, at General as of now. So maybe I would agree with 1-3 maps unlocking around Major/Lt. General, but not past that.

 

2) I agree, high rank does not equal high skill. Still, for some it would be enjoyable as a reward, and it wouldnt necessarily be a 'regular' map. It would be something special, like Madness... maybe with low gravity mode, or some other special effect. It would be a 'play' map, to do neat things in, as a reward for reaching Generalissimo.

 

3) EXCELLENT point. The part I've highlighted in green is the true core of my thoughts in regards to maps. THAT is how a map should be made. Elevation changes, rugged terrain requiring more skill to aim with bumps and uneven land (like in real life.) And yes, any map that is added should be centered around being useful for Cybersport, yes, PRO maps. Skill should be the main focus here, with the potential to gain more of it as maps become more demanding with more depth for mastery.

Some maps, when they are unlocked at your rank, don't get plaed on because people want to stick to the original maps they played on in their lower rank days, so they don't get played until they get to an even higher rank, so that people would realize how good a map is and actually make battles in them.

Awesome stuff, I like the work you've been doing in regards to discussing maps ;) I voted Colonel, yes to the Generalissimo map, and quality - Colonel seems about the right rank to unlock the last map, the Generalissimo map would be a great incentive as you said (but it'd have to be unique in a good way), and I tend to stick to the same few maps depending on the quality of gameplay they offer.

No because of its unlocked earlier noobs will come and mult and just mess around in them not play and battle like courage

Just don't make Madness full of really high ranks when ranks like me battle there...

I can much more easily see low ranks enjoying that map, playing it a lot more often than high ranks. Its obviously much less of a 'serious map.' Can you imagine how silly it would be if Cybersport was played there?

 

What's wrong with high ranks though? It allows you to improve your skill and become a better player far better than fighting low rankers who haven't a clue what they're doing... not to say that all high rankers know what they're doing - trust me, a huge percentage of them are clueless.... <_<

 

Personally though, I'm not hastily awaiting the arrival of Madness, when according to the most recent test server map testing, there are far better maps with much more potential coming soon! One of those being Gravity... and Short Bridge if they add CTF mode is just going to be awesome. I'm sure I'll occasionally drop by Madness with friends just to mess around and do something different, but I certainly won't be playing there regularly, that's for sure. :)

By looking at the numbers, heres my conclusion at this point...

 

Question 1: 89% of players want the last map unlock to be earlier or much earlier. (32/36 votes)

Question 2: By far - 83% of you want a special map as a reward for making it to the rank of Generalissimo. The other 17% of you don't expect to reach the last rank any time soon.

Question 3: Combining the majority and the minority, it seems that Tanki players are far more concerned over a maps QUALITY, than how many we have to choose from, yet we still want to have a nice selection of options to fit everyones tastes.

 

Hopefully the developers will respond to this by listening to your votes, and doing their best to cater to everyones wishes by lowering the rank limits on maps overall, devoting some time to creating a special map for reaching the highest rank, and greatly improving the quality maps to make each one unique and enjoyable for all.

hey this a useless topic now that after maps update, maps unlock at warrant officer 4

It was a very useful topic up until this point. I believe it had a very real influence on their decision of doing so. It served its purpose. :)
