Is English your first language?

Surprising how many respected forumers don't speak English as a first language. I should have presumed so, but I never really think about it, considering how fluent the majority of such forumers are. Which brings me back to the first post...

Title.

When you look at general grammar of the forum, for a lot of people, it can't be.

I refuse to accept that English being a second language for someone means that the person would be worse at it in terms of grammar and so on than a native speaker. Just take a look at Raph and Val, who've posted here; Val's just about one of the awesomest (is that a word?) story writer the newspaper has ever seen, and story writing's definitely got to be one of the hardest things to do successfully in any language. Raph utilises his fluency in both French and English to produce some top-notch work. Heck, even most people debating in that evolution topic from a short while back ( for example) have first languages other than English, and there was some seriously higher-level posts made by these players. Take a look at our CM, too; he's pretty eloquent in phrasing points and giving important information to players. There are definitely native speakers of English here who wouldn't be able to debate or write to such a high standard as some of the non-native English forumers here can. It's all about how adept one is at languages in general.

Er, strictly speaking, no, since I started speaking a different language when I was younger, then switched to English. But I can't speak this "first" language very well (and no, it's not baby language).

Considering you purposely left this fact out, it's probably pointless asking but I'm curious anyway so... Could you reveal what that first language was?

Yes.... English is my first language (USA born 'n raised)

Grammar is quite an issue here. You really can't blame them. For the length of time some of them have been learning English, it's pretty impressive what they know.

But I'm still pretty annoying with mistakes. But then again, most will learn from them and will be grateful for corrections.

Yes, it's pointless asking. I won't say.
