Nothing goes better with a tuxedo that a bowtie...To wear a strait (necktie) with a tux, would be like wearing patent leather shoes mountain hiking. This should clear up a lot of misconceptions surounding the greatly overlooked "bow", which has for the most part been viewed upon as not being masculine enough. To answer your question? On a formal scale from 1 to 10? Any thing over 8, I’d go with the bowtie. Now there's an exception to this unwritten rule. For instance, if you want to dress casual in a professional environment; then the bowtie can take up the slack, as far as formality is concerned.

 

P.S.  I can't help but ponder, as to why this sudden interest in tie preference.... B)  :P
