What do English people think of the word "soccer"

Rugby--> Change a couple of rules---> American football

Cool story bro. Tell it again.

Seriously. At least do some research before you come up with a crude statement like that. American Football is as similar to Rugby as Rugby is to Football (Or "Soaccah" as you over the ocean say it). You hear me? Do I need to drill my point in?

AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS, LIKE, WAAAAY DIFFERENT FROM RUGBY.

Apart from the fact that American Football is aimed at getting the ball behind the enemy posts, that's where it pretty much ends. In American Football, you just dodge all the opponents using whatever means possible (including your team-mates grabbing them and knocking them out of your way) and get the ball by throwing to a team-mate or running into the enemy zone without being floored. In comparison, Rugby to American Football is like The Cosine Rule to Decimal Places. Like, waaaaaay more complex.

So, please. Don't say that.  It's just a very closed-minded way to think of two entirely different sports.

It just doesn't makes sense to me...since European football is played with feet, it should be called "football" everywhere...but yeah, Americans have already a another popular sport with the same name in their country...so they came up with 'Soccer" instead. But at the end of the day, if you think about it...WHO CARES how's it's called!!!

P.S: American Football ROCKS btw....if i wasn't a "Soccer" player, i would definitely go for American Football...be the best QuarterBack in NFL history....AMEN!!! :p

Americans usually want to change what it is, and make it their own, some examples are-

Football

Right side driving

Farehneit vs Celcius

Metric system

and more.

The United States' "soccer" is the rest of the world's football, while its "football" is, well, American Football. It's just how the American vs. general international cultures deviated from each other. I personally enjoying watching American Football a good deal more than 'Soccer', though I think the latter should adopt the former's name, as it has a lot more to do with footwork than the former.

Guys, the OP was just asking for opinions on the word- this isn't the place to be discussing which is 'better' or more 'complex' and thusly interesting. They have different rules and objectives, and can't fairly be compared.
