Not sure what you mean by the "all on 1 path", but if it's a choice between micro upgrading an item and getting the next modification free or waiting and buying the next modification for a full price, then both are good in some ways.

Micro-upgrading:

  • You get some early upgrades, which is an advantage in battles.
  • You pay as much for the 10 MU steps as you do for the whole next modification.
  • You can't really take advantage of sales all that much.
  • You have to wait for each upgrade to finish and start the next one, which can be inconvenient.
  • Or you can speed them up, which is a lot more expensive than just buying the next modification.

Buying modification:

  • You don't need to bother with having to log in every day to check if the upgrade step finished.
  • You buy the whole thing at once.
  • You can save a lot of crystals if you wait for a 50% sale during a holiday event and buy the modification then.
  • You may find it hard to play on the last few ranks before M2 unlocks because your default M1 will be weak compared to other players' upgraded M1s and M2s.

Overall, I recommend that you do use upgrades, but never speed them up. Also take advantage of holiday MU sales and buy a micro upgrade with a discount.

Well, as of a recent update a month or so back, Micro upgrades were made to add up to the same cost as the next modification of the item you want to upgrade. Say you want Shaft M2. The cost for this turret is 103,000 crystals. This means that if you have Shaft M1 and you do all 10 upgrades, you pay a total of 103,000.

So, it is a good idea to Micro upgrade as you will most likely be able to finish then before the next modification unlocks. A 10/10 item will have the same stats as the next modification. Moreover, when you do fully upgrade an item, you get the next modification for free. The price will become a green 0.

The only possible draw back I see from this is that you can get a product kit for usually little more than the turret alone.

However, it is also veryyyy expensive to MU one by one. I tried to MU my Viking (which was already 17/20) yesterday, and it cost me like 70k to MU it to 19/20 (well, it's currently 18... will be 19/20 by next week..) the waiting times are quite huge, and with sales it's a problem due to that :/ For low ranks, I'd totally recommend it tho... the higher you go... depends on your crystal income :D

What is the best of these turrets to be upgraded to M4:

Smoky

Ricochet

Twins ?

Twins seems to be the most popular of them, and for a good reason.

The main advantages of Twins are that this turret has the highest DPM (Damage Per Minute) in the game, and that it can keep shooting forever without the need to reload. Smoky also has a very short reload time so it feels pretty much like Twins in terms of being able to shoot forever without having to take a short break from destroying enemies in order to reload, which is a big problem for Ricochet users.

Of course each turret has it's own unique properties which can give you some advantages. Smoky got a pretty good impact force that you can use to set the enemy's aim off, and Ricochet allows you to hit enemies without getting into their line of sight.

If you just want to go for pure power, definitely go for Twins, but if you prefer other type of strategy and gameplay, choose the turret that suits your preferences.

I also prefer twins, but m4 does not has that difference from m3, just +20 in the damage. On the other hand smoky m4 is far much stronger than m3.

I have 36% smoky protection, but when i play against m4 smokys they still do high damage

Yes Smoky gets a lot stronger when being upgraded to M4, but Twins remains the strongest. You'd be surprized to find out just by how much Twins is actually stronger:

Turret Min damage Max damage Reload time (seconds) Min DPM Max DPM

Smoky4206501.51680026000

Twins1902200.2654301849811

Smoky also has these random critical hits, so it's actual DPM is a bit higher. I didn't play with Smoky lately so I'm not 100% sure about this, but based on the tanki wiki it seems that the average rate of critical hits should be about 4.5 shots, which means +1066 max DPM and +3111 min DPM, which doesn't get Smoky much closer to the DPM of Twins.

One big thing to take into consideration is how popular are Twins protection modules compared to Smoky protection modules, I have no idea about that one so you'll have to check it yourself or wait until someone who knows better than me will reply.

Most of this info is based on the Tanki Wiki, you can find tables of all the turrets' characteristics Here.

Is that 190/220 dmg for twins both barrels combined or for each barrel?

That's what's worry me too.

I'm MU'ing my M2 Isida to M3 and I'm currently at step 6, about to go step 7 at Lt Colonel.  By the time I do steps 8 an 9 I should get the final modification for free.

BUT I won't have reached the unlock rank by that point (Marshall), yet I can BUY the M3 product kit at Lt General.

Is MU'ing it any further a waste of crystals, considering it's quicker just to buy the product kit early?

So you ranked since Dec 9?  what steps are you at now for isida?

Overall if still need to decide, you will have two ranks between buying kit and cashing in 10/10 to m3 for free.

MU-ing and buying Kit with that item is a general waste of crystals unless you have plenty to spare.

Plus - you benefit now, and can also start upgrading 2 ranks sooner.

Minus - you will be spending crystals now that could go toward something else later - more MUs or Protection Modules.

If you don't have unlimited funds you need to...

Weigh the value of MU-ing now and waiting two extra ranks to start upgrade on the M3 vs...

Stop MU-ing and go with current (7/10?) for 4 more ranks until Kit unlocks.  Do want the hull+turret+module?  If you don't want all 3 it's a waste. Paint is just a throw-in for extra cost...

Yes I ranked up to Colonel since my post.

I'm at Step 7 with Isida with Step 8 in progress.

But also MUing Twins, should have Step 8 by the end of the month.

I just think making MUers wait two extra ranks for upgrade is confusing, especially if one is a buyer too.

I have all my m2 gear mu'ed to 10. I can play with Gizmos and above now.. I am sure I will be able to play through two ranks between kit and free trade-in. My m3 gear is therefor already paid for and I have been using it for months. Months ... months of using the advantages and building up funds to MU the stuff when I can trade it in.

(I guess I will learn soon since i am less than 1,000 exp from LtGen and kit-buying rank. heh.)

When and if I want to get a 2nd hull and turret... that's what m3 kits are for IMO.

Thank god we've got the New Year sale in a few weeks, so I should end up with Isida at M2 step 9 and Twins at M2 step 8.

Made my Smoky M1 into M2 through the sales. Also made Twins M0 fully MUed. On another account I fully MUed my Railgun and MUed my Hornet to 8/10. Thanks Tanki!

MU every step once in sales without using the speed-up is great tho

Yeah right... It would only take 7513 years to M4 but that's fine.

Respect man, just Smoky and Viking M2 there in your garage. How many crystals did you save up already?

Thank you Splatterpoint.

I had just under 300k on LW going into the holiday. I bought an m3 module to give me Vulcan protection and put 5 MU into it. I had some protection against everything else so i filed that gap. I put 1 MU into 4 owned m2 modules.  One was already at 10.

Which I am starting to realize I need. 90% of the games open to me are against Marshals and up (but not Legends yet). They are intense but I carry my share. :)

I was left with about 100k. Between now LtGen and Marshal I just need to MU my modules everything else is gravy.

Today I played on my smaller account and noticed my 5/10 M1 Viking was getting consistently one-shotted by a Railgun. So I found the guy killing me. He was a Third Lieutenant (one diamond) with the Voltage kit, the one with M2 Railgun and M2 Dictator. Both of which were fully upgraded to 10/10. Meaning this guy was playing with M3 Railgun and M3 Dictator...at Third Lieutenant! In another battle I also found a Simoom kit (Thunder M2 + Dic M2), again fully maxed, dominating Warrant Officers.

Now I can remember when you used to be able to have every M3 by Second Lieutenant...but this is just a bit crazy!

MUs really need to be limited, or else it severely hurts the balance in the mid ranks. At least lock it at the halfway point until a certain rank. I have nothing against kits giving items a few ranks early, but what you're doing here is pitting people who just barely unlocked their first M1s, against people who already have full M3s combos.

Yeah - it used to be much more expensive to MU items after you bought the kit. many did it slowly because of the cost.

I don't think they've really considered what happens now with the components in kits after they are unlocked.

If someone upgrades smoky from their Keeper or Striker kit to m1 10/10 - that's theoretically 14 to 16 ranks early. :o   Yikes!
