In-Chat Translator

Recommended Posts

i had the idea of having an in-chat translator. there is nothing worse than playing a game and trying to communicate with people in a different language... you could have a flag icon next to the message to tell you the previous language before translation. for example if i say 'hey there my name is Hunter' on there screen they would see 'эй меня зовут Хантер' (the Russian translation with a little English flag after my name). benefits of this would be a wider community and a wider use of the chat and a larger understanding of the game you are playing. as of yet i have not come up with any problems that could happen so feel free to post below. if people like this idea then post below. if it is not possible its no problem just a cool idea  :)

It would be cool If they could merge google translator with the game. By the way some players do understand english, but their keyboards are not always letting them write in Latin alphabet. That is the main problem

This is what I'm thinking, I see so many players who cannot communicate with there teams due to language barriers, this game is played by a HUGE variety of players... most being Russian, English, Arabian, Spanish. (With a few others in there..) Now nothing is more annoying than not being able to understand or speak to a teammate. It sortve removes the sense of teamwork. Now atm I use translate.google.com ALOT, as I can speak in Russian, Spanish, etc.. When really I only speak English :) Okay so the other day I started talking around mostly in Russian explaining my idea, and basically everyone agreed with me and said they liked it! Now I cannot make a visual idea of how it would work but the basic thing is it would change my English to whatever output language I chose. So If I was changing the language to Russian to speak with a Russian, he could change to English to speak with me :)

Like I said I'm not quite sure how it would work but I think the idea would help immensely!! :D

Please give it some thought Dev's :)

I started a forum, didn't see this was here. He has a fantastic Idea and I don't understand why it wasn't pursued.  This guy has some great details ^^.

The main problem would be actually getting the translator to work. It is an extremely complicated thing to develop. Even Google, a multi-BILLION dollar company, has a hard time making translations accurate to be understandable. But integrating the Google translate or Babel fish with the game would be the easiest solution rather than build one from scratch. I think this would all have to wait until the Unity version though.

50 / 50 on this. I'd love to see me meeting some new Russians, and maybe get better, but then again some people speak 2 languages just like me with my native Mexican Spanish, even though many of my freinds speak english...

If you don't understand what your teammates are saying, it's your fault for not

understanding their language, and their fault for not realizing it. Most team

players type in clear English so everybody can understand them, let's just

face it, there isn't a single person playing online who is unable to understand

English at least to some degree, broken English or not you will be able to

communicate. Those who refuse to learn English are simply too lazy or blind

to see that they will be left behind soon enough...

I'm not going to delve into the matter of which language is more privileged and

which one isn't, I'm not here to flame the thread, but the simple fact is that English

is the most commonly used language for one very simple reason: it is by far the

easiest language to learn compared to any other... It isn't my native tongue, but

you don't see me ranting all over the game in any "Yugoslavian" language unless

I run across somebody and I specificly want to talk to them without concerning

myself about anybody else. When I want to talk with the community, I use English

just because everybody else does, and you should too...

Including translators into any game is clunky as all hell, I know in Warcraft when

players actually started working on translators so you can understand what the

enemy faction is talking about during combat, and it was just a mess. That is the

reason why working as a translator is a highly-paid profession, because no machine

in the world can replace you, no machine in the world can understand the concept of

a single sentance better than a human being, and that is most likely never going to

change, unless maybe in the far future we develop self-aware AI with genuine

humanlike behavior...

But honestly, when you break this subject down gameplaywise, texting is irrelevant

the higher the player ranks up, because after you join a clan/guild, you will all stop

using textchat alltogether and switch to voicechat, which is definitely more needed in

this game a broken translator... Because if Google couldn't get the translator right,

how can anyone absolutely inferior to them do any better?

=== Edit, damned typos...

A translator of the most common used words like attack , defend , hi , how are u , my name is .. , would be nice

Those would be more appropriate for audio signals, like that recognizable

signalling for charge. Adding them into the chat won't help much, mostly

because most players don't even bother reading it, I've seen countless

cases where I typed in "Sniper coming on the beach" while playing Rio

and nobody bothered to check that side so the sniper end's up temporarily

closing off that line of approach...

It's a good idea, but I don't think it's going to happen, just don't know why. Maybe because there all already designated servers to separate English players, from Russian or any other players.

Good idea in general though.
