Anti-Theft system.

Recommended Posts

Hello, tankers. Nowadays, too many players' accounts are getting stolen and unfortunately, not all of the victims can get them back. But what if there was an anti-theft system? Let me explain you how:

The computer tracks your IP address and saves it. Let's say your home IP is 00.000.0001 and you usually play at home. But suddenly, a hacker stole your account and started playing with it at his/her office and office's IP is 00.000.0002. But when he/she tries to open your account, the computer detects it's not usual IP address and enables protocol. It can ask seeral questions that were already chosen by the real owner of account before. If the hacker can't asnwer all the questions correctly, your account gets blocked and you receive an email that says your account is hacked.

That would be really helpful.

Despite the annoyance of having a dynamic ip I like this idea.  Might take some extra server side resources but the added security would be worth it.  Could have a secondary password to type in from an unusual ip, could have e-mail verification, could have phone verification.  Any additional level of security would help tremendously.

That said triggering an automated e-mail or phone verification every time you log in from a new ip is cumbersome.  Not to mention the players that for privacy reasons won't ever add a phone number and will use a disposable e-mail service.  It might be better to allow players to set a secondary password, one that can not have too many similar characters to their primary password, that will also be used for account retrieval, changing passwords, or changing e-mails.

This would probably save resources since there would be less effort dedicated to the recovery of stolen accounts or bans issued to hackers using stolen accounts.

This idea has good intention, but needs a bit more thought. No one uses the same computer forever, so how would this "Anti-Theft System" know that you had switched computers, or that your previous computer is out of commission? Would you be forced to answer the three questions every time you ever entered Tanki from that point out?

Thanks,

Not every time, you go through the verification every time you sign in from a new ip.  Each verified ip would then be put on the safelist for that account.  For some people this would be almost never, for people with a dynamic ip it would be pretty often.  Nonetheless I think it is definitely worth the effort.  Lots of places use a similar security system.
