Pythagoras Theorem is used.

ok i know it

 hypotenuse = base square + height square

5 square + 4 square = 25+16 = 41

root of 41 = 7 

therefore 7 km

Your right however displacement is a vector (something which can only be described by stating its direction aswell as its magnitude) so you need a direction. The direction could be found by using trigonometry and then using the 'compass' to state the direction. You have scored 1 point out of 2. Well done!
