[Issue 27] Continue the Story! [Chapter 2]

Just to clear up a few misconceptions some of you may have about part 1.

1. Im writing from a Russian perspective (Nikolai is definitely a Russian name, no?)

2 The T-34 tank is a Russian tank

3. The Russians attacked Berlin on Hitler's birthday

With careful reading, all this should be evident, however, some are still confused.

Hope this helps :) May the force be with you B)

CHAPTER 2

I stumbled down the stairs in shock. I needed to find someone. Something to comfort me. Comfort. It didn't look like one could find anything in the charred mass of artillery shells, broken bodies, and rubble. In my mind I tried to make sense of all that was going on around me. How was Boris doing? I knew Germans were notorious for their torture methods, but what about when the war was finished? I shuddered visibly. I felt cold griping fear for Boris, for if he was returned, it would be as a prisoner of war. Stalin never treated them well. In fact it is a hell hole to go to the work camps.

Still, I was a "good" soviet soldier only thinking about what to do for my country. At least, that is what I was supposed to do. Now I only felt like grieving for Boris. If he was alive, he would be tortured. If dead, he was gone, if returned, he would be worked to death. Action must be taken.

Who could take action better than captain Nikolai? He wouldn't understand one man's life, but would order an attack if I told him that the hated building was actually the center for sniping operations. I didn't mind lying. It was in every soviet's nature. Lie to eat, sleep, and survive. My mind made up, I raced down the street to find the captain. I was so concentrated on this task that I never noticed what lay right were I was about to place my foot.

Chapter 2 Entry

Captured

Oh no, oh no, oh no, this is not according to plan. Gosh, Boris is captured. Dang it, what am I gonna do? I thought that over and over in my head. As I exited the building, I heard 3 loud ticks then a... BOOM! I turned my head and saw a big fire, and about 1/4 of the building standing. Flaming bodies were everywhere.  And then I knew that my comrades were gone. I grabbed my rifle, ready to pull the trigger at any given moment.

Man, can it get any worse? Is what went on in my head. And you know what? That question was answered. Suddenly 10 men pointed their SMG's toward me. Once I saw their uniform, I knew it was the German squad. Then the one with the most badges on his uniform stood up. I'm guessing it's evil Hitler. He yelled at me from a safe distance, "Ooo, so you guys got Nikolai? Haha, this birthday keeps getting better and better! First, the T-34 with minor damage, that we can fix in about 3 minutes. And now, I have you!" I responded, "I already know you want to question me, you want to get me to give you the information. But, If you think I'm going to rat out on my team, you better think again." Everyone gave each other the same look. "Well guys, If he won't talk here, then I'll make him talk in the I.R." Each one of them nodded and came up to me. They put a bag over my head so I wouldn't see Berlin's layout and plan another attack if I escape.

They put me in the trunk of their German designed jeep and dashed away. In less than 5 minutes, I was standing in front of a 50 story skyscraper. Suddenly, I got pushed from behind with the pointy end of the gun. I felt this electric shock go through my body. I couldn't help but squeal. Since when did Germany have electric rifles? I thought in my head. They enjoyed having a laugh, but as soon as Hitler turned around, they acted as if nothing happened. Hitler had an evil smirk on his face. I started getting butterflies as I entered the room. It was probably the size of an average bedroom.

I sat in the chair and looked around. It only took me about 3 seconds to scan the whole room. Just seeing the set up, I knew that this was the interrogation room. So I guess that's what I.R means. I thought. And of course they had the little flippable table in between me and Hitler. He opened his mouth, but right before he could talk I saw horror in his face. He pointed silently to the door behind me. I slowly turned around to see...

then our tank rumbled through the bushes,he knew that the enemy were more than us,but suddenly the tank fell into a large hold dug by the enemy,we were now in trouble knowing that the enemy would come soon,we quickly ran away to safety, and now we could hear the enemy coming near to our tank, they searched our tanks throughly ,only one of our comrades were killed,we ran away till our barracks then we told all that happened there and then we marched back with reinforcement, but all to know that the enemy was gone.

I ran downstairs as fast as humanly possible. Half of our tanks were demolished, and 2 were heavily damaged. The air was thick with dust. The German soldiers were harsher than the prickling of desert cactuses. Most of our soldiers were feeling downcast. I myself was feeling battle- worn. But there was no time for feelings. The panzers were closing in and most of our missiles or heavy damage weapons were down. Our tankers were outnumbered 5-15 and each of theirs was heavier, stronger and more powerful. Wet with perspiration, i ran with my swiss knife in hand and took down one of their soldiers. I threw his body on the other soldiers and ran towards the tanks. I climbed on one of them and opened the turret's top from where the user would enter.

I was shocked. The drivers of the tanks were not human. They were...

"Androids!” I shouted out. One of the robots turned and saw me. "Target acquired. Annihilate." it said mechanically. It walked towards me with a deadly aura. My heart was thumping frantically against my ribs. Perhaps it wanted to complete a lifetime's beats before it stopped. Suddenly, someone pulled me out of the tank.

It was Boris. He was heavily bruised, and there were some scorch marks and a purple puffed eye. I opened my mouth to speak, but he shushed me and said in a low voice, "We have been betrayed. Our information on the German artillery and infantry was wrong. But there is a way to solve this. I saw that they were metal made."

"So what? Metal- made only makes them stronger," I retaliated in a panicky voice.

“But it creates certain weaknesses. Only brutal force won’t help us here. We need a strategy. And as it aspires, I’ve got one right now. Come on now, put this together, this shouldn’t be hard…..” he said. And the answer came to me in one glorious stroke…

“Magnetism!” I shouted out. “Exactly. We need a huge magnetic device. I don’t see we having it, though….”

“I know where it is! I saw a huge pendulum on the top of the town square clock. It works by magnetism. I bet you would find some magnets in the walls on the either side of the oscillation. We could get that.” I said gloriously. Boris was literally trumpeting with joy.

We took an abandoned Volkswagen. Boris was driving when we saw something that made us stop in our tracks. The town square clock had fallen.

“That makes our job easier! Let’s take the magnets and scarper!” said Boris joyfully. I ran out and started breaking the clock with a hand- pistol. I needed ammunition. A passing soldier was injured. I recognized him as on our side. I asked him for some ammunition and he gave me some. I took the magnets.

We started attaching the pieces to the car. Then we ran to the nearest radar. Boris was the man. He mumbled some scientific mumbo- jumbo and then broke the radar. He then used the electro- magnetic signals and powered the magnets.

We took the magnet to an isolated hill. Boris and I set off our magnet.

Tanks, pieces of metal, guns and what- not came towards us. A huge blast was made and that told us that the job was done. The battle was ours. And British air- support was on its way. An aroma of victory was in the air. Everyone was celebrating. Hitler had committed suicide in Poland. All was good.

Is the story told from Nikolai's perspective, or that of a soldier under his command? A bit hard to differentiate... so I continued the story from a German perspective. Here it is.

Chapter 2: Generalleutnant Helmuth Weidling1

A communications officer rushed into the command center. “Sir,” he said, “We’ve received an unexpected thrust from Russian forces of the 6th Belorussian Front, just east of Potsdam.” He continued, “Panzers2 from our III SS Panzer Corps have managed to drive them back to the outskirts of the city, where they seem to be holding at the moment.”

“At ease, Lieutenant. You are dismissed,” said Weidling. He had a daunting task at hand: defend Berlin with just the ragged remains of the once proud Wehrmacht. As if defending against the combined might of the 1st Belorussian, the 2nd Belorussian, and the 1st Ukrainian Front were not enough, now he had to contend with a flanking movement by the 6th Belorussian Front as well! How, Weidling thought, in heaven’s name, did our surveillance not detect the maneuver? He would need to have to get a word in with them, the arrogant bastards, even in the face of defeat.

‘Well’, a small voice in his head said, ‘you haven’t done any better’. Weidling cursed himself for being stupid. An attack on Hitler’s birthday! Why, how could Stalin have passed up that opportunity for propaganda? Capturing Berlin on the Führer’s birthday would be momentous indeed. He should have anticipated the attack.

Although the Russians’ flanking movement had failed, their mere existence caused complications. He had been planning to draw on the III SS Panzer Corps replace casualties of the forces defending strategically important Charlottenburg, which had suffered a severe artillery pounding by the 1st Belorussian Front, losing many panzers in the process. Now, they would receive no reinforcements, as the III SS Panzer Corps would have to be left in place to defend against further attacks by the 6th Belorussian Front. Then there was also the threat of the 1st Ukrainian Front linking with the 6th Belorussian Front, whereupon the Soviets would clearly launch a massive offensive that his forces had little hope of defending against.

Weidling’s musings were punctuated by a distant explosion. As the air raid sirens sounded, Weidling thought, it’s the goddamned Brits again. For weeks, RAF Mosquitos3 had been shuttling back and forth, delivering thousands of tons of ordnance onto the streets of Berlin, while meeting little resistance from German flak. But this time was different. The planes were in fact Ilyushin Il-2s4 of the Red Air Force, attempting to neutralize ground resistance to clear the way for the 6th Belorussian Front. Already, the distinctive staccato bursts of the German 2 cm Flak 385 were being heard, punctuated by the occasional explosion from a distressed aircraft hitting the ground. Adding to the cacophony, the Soviet artillery opened up, with German ones firing in reply. Although the artillery was not accurate enough at such extreme ranges to deal serious damage, Weidling worried about the bombers damaging his panzers, of which there were precious few left. After a discordant concert of ten minutes, the sounds of battle faded.

Another officer rushed in, this time a rugged captain, who commanded a company of anti-aircraft soldiers. “Sir,” he saluted, “Our anti-aircraft company has driven off the Soviet air attack. We managed to down 13 planes, out of a squadron of 20.”

“They were Soviets?” asked Weidling, concealing his surprised expression rapidly.

“Sir, we could see the Soviet insignia, a red star, on their wings.”

“Very good, Captain,” replied Weidling, not showing his inner turmoil, “We must kill as many of the bastards as we can. We must show that the Wehrmacht is still a force to be reckoned with! You are dismissed.”

With a smart salute, the officer turned and left, leaving Weidling in the morose consideration of his options. The fact that it was the Soviets, not the British that were now bombing Berlin meant only one thing: the Soviets were on the verge of entering the city. That meant that the 6th Belorussian Front must be trying to---.

Weidling’s thoughts were interrupted by a SS officer entering the room, who said, “Sir! We have captured a Russian soldier by the name of Boris. What shall we do with him?”

Weidling replied, “Take him to our best interrogators. We must discover the true objective of the Soviets here. When he proves to be of no further use, you may execute him.”

The SS man turned and left, leaving Weidling alone in the eerie silence that had descended on the city since the air raid. Weidling’s revelation of the 6th Belorussian Front’s probable objective pushed him into action. He summoned his best strategists, and set them to action with a single sentence.

“I intend to concentrate our forces on an attack on the 6th Belorussian Front.”6

With luck, he would succeed.

1Last commander of German forces in Berlin.

2Tanks.

3Famous fighter-bomber employed by the RAF.

4Ground attack aircraft used by the Red Air Force.

5Anti-aircraft gun that formed the mainstay of German air defences.

6A front is equivalent to an army group, about 3-5 field armies; the 6th Belorussian Front is fictional.
