I know this is way over 500 words, but since this is the end of the story, I had to take it long k. It's 1025 words btw.

A brother till death

I ran without stopping or halting at all as I dragged Boris with me, even though he did not hesitate running with me. Our heavy army wear was making us slow and made it harder for us to run. Trying to move as agile as I could; I swiftly turned into a narrow alley which led out to our rendezvous point, as my instantaneous thought began to take shape. I ran with all of my strength and breath, through streets which could not be distinguished, as I lost my way in this labyrinth of Berlin. After running through countless streets, and taking several turns I lost track of, I halted, Boris having halted with me.

‘Seriously Boris, couldn’t you have thought of an easier way to get that disk?!’ I scolded him. ‘Anyway, where are your associates? The insiders? Can they tell us a way out? I really have no idea where to go now, and we mustn’t stay here, we’re being followed by German soldiers!’

‘I understand, but they can no longer help us, as I had only paid them nuff’ to fake my identity.’ He replied, exalting his heavy breath from our relentless chase.

‘How’s your arm?’ I asked as I examined his wound.

‘I’ve been shot… but I’m fine, for now.’ He calmly replied.

I produced a modern tracking device from my bag, and I fiddled around with it trying to track our position. It tracked our exact position in under half a minute, which I considered a good omen for our further journey.

‘Our rendezvous is about two blocks east after which we meet Commander Nikolai. Travel light, ditch what you can, and move quickly, we only have two hours to reach the chopper. Our buddy Schmidt has plotted us a safe route through the German patrols. We’ll have a five minute window between each patrol, our resources confirm. Hopefully, we won’t be needing any weapons, but just keep a silenced handgun in case we need it.’

We removed most of our possessions, and ditched them into a garbage can in an alley, as we travelled with our GPS, a handgun, and lightened our armor, to increase maneuverability. We sprinted through the alleys, which formed an indistinctive maze, yet provided us with perfect composure, as to our silent escape.

My attention diverted towards my receiver, which indicated a message from Commander Nikolai. ‘Warehouse #106, a quarter mile east of your location, stocked supplies, light weapons and armour.’ The message read.

‘Looks like it’s our lucky day’ I told Boris.

‘I hope we could bet on it’ He answered instantly.

We continued our tiring trek, as we ran across streets and through the buildings. The scenario displayed ruin, dismay, and death, which contrived to an unquestionable fact that war was not a step towards peace. How many lives were lost? How many people driven out of their homes? Who was responsible? Is this invasion justified? As these thoughts bugged my mind, I decided to share them with my companion, Boris, who I could trust all my secrets with.

‘Boris, is this war justified? Is this our fight?’ I questioned him, in a curious manner.

‘Why be all philosophical, mate?’ he replied as he broke up into a chortle of laughter. ‘We fight for the name of our country, we fight to defend it, and to claim its honour’

I gave no reply for this, and we continued silently. It took us at least half an hour to reach the warehouse, and the journey was utmost tiring. The warehouse was old, made of wood and had a foul stench as soon as I opened its gates.

‘Not a great disguise, y’ know?’ commented Boris.

‘Talk later, savor the supplies and get ready to move on. Patrols arrivin’ any minute now.’ I replied as I packed our supplies with haste. I collected our light handguns and dumped them onto the table. I emptied my bag onto the floor and collected one which was already packed for us. I picked up a silenced assault rifle and passed it on to Boris, and kept a short machine gun for myself.

‘Now that’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout!’  cried Boris.

We now had our required possessions for the rest of our journey, and Boris had wrapped his arm in some sort of a cloth. I demanded the condition of his arm, apparently, he was still able to shoot accurately with it, which was certainly a relief.  We walked out of the warehouse from the back of the building. I looked towards my watch. We had just over 10 minutes to reach our rendezvous point.

I looked towards the buildings that surrounded us. Architecture worth remark and strict alignment of buildings in diverging patterns; Solid German work. The roads and streets seemed crimson from the dust and blood that reigned the surface.

We continued our journey for another five minutes before we came to a halt. Finally, we reached the chopper. It had landed on the ground, which was a daring decision to counter with the regular patrols. We approached the chopper with utmost relief, but just when I was a few metres away from the chopper, we see a tank shooting towards us. I took cover behind a building, as Boris followed.

Our escape had gone to ruin. We were doomed to die in this country. As the certainty of our death approached my mind, I could only think of one thing. My family. I remembered how we savored and cherished our great moments together. The memories which flushed through my mind in a moment. It took a while for the thought to settle in, during which my senses had died. My heart, my emotion had now taken over my moral though. For the second time in war, I was at loss of what to do.

I got up, passed an assault rifle to Boris, picked one for myself and said to him.

‘One last gunfight.’

‘Our last gunfight.’ He replied with certainty.

We came out of our hiding and shot straight at the army of soldiers that had to deal with us – the lone Russian survivors in Berlin.

Final Chapter [iV]-Never Too Late

“After running a couple of meters, I heard a gunshot. Blood splattered across the stains and ashes made from the fires that were still burning ceaselessly. I turned around, while still running. Boris was still with me. Where did the blood come from then? Boris was holding my pistol with his intact left hand, and a german soldier was lying dead behind us. The other germans were terrified, they didn’t know what to do at first. We continued running, while their screams faded away in the distance. Shots from their carbines bounced off the walls. We quickly turned around the corner and continued running down. After endless running I decided that it was time to take a rest.

-Boris! We can’t keep running like that. My lungs are burning and probably yours are the same way. We need to take a rest.

-Sure, sure. But damn, my hand hurts from that shot of yours… The wound will get infected, god knows what chemicals float in the air now.

-Hey, look at that dead soldier. We can loot his backpack.-and I pointed at a dead soldier that was next to the wrecks of a Panzer IV.

But when we came close to him, I realized it was a child. Hitler announced that Berlin should be defended at any cost. For that every citizen, from 10-year old children to 70-year old men were handed guns to fight. War was war, I didn’t have time to feel anything. We found some medical stuff, bandages and etc. I quickly bandaged Boris’ wounded hand. What now?

-How are we gonna get out of this hell?-asked Boris. Before answering, the roar of a tank was coming closer and closer towards us. The sound was coming from the opposite direction.

We quickly hid behind a wall surrounded by ruins. For whatever reason, there was a Panzerfaust showing up from the wrecks. The idea of using it against the tank quickly struck me. But Boris realized: “Are you out of your mind? They will hear it and come.” By “they” he meant the germans. He was right, we could only hide…

Night came quite fast. It was time. Although the city was infested with enemy forces, we knew a way out.

-The river in Northeast Berlin. We can follow it all the way to where the Red Army is located.

-Ok, but if there are boats, we can use one.

            -Nice suggestion Boris.-I answered.”

-But grandpa, he is a traitor! Why did you act so nice with him?

-Although he was a traitor, Boris seemed to be ashamed of what he had done. But it wasn’t the time to act harsh with him, we were in it together. This is why I embraced his suggestion. Now, my child, let’s continue the story…

“…The fires were still flickering in the pitch black night. We were walking like a carnivore stalking its prey. There it was, the salvation… Boris was right, there were boats!

-Come on, we need to go. The freedom is awaiting us.-I uttered silently.

But we both heard steps. It was a german soldier guarding the boats for some reason. We had no choice, I sneaked up behind him and started choking him. His resistance was equal to that of a trapped beast, I had no choice. I had to gun him down, the shot echoed into the darkness. Now was the time to untie a boat and go. I kept on struggling to untie one, while Boris was on guard. Not much time passed after the death of that soldier and we heard screams in the distance. They were closing in.

-You take care of the boat, I will take care of them.

            -Ok.

Boris grabbed the dead soldier’s MP40, the german troops were coming closer and closer. He couldn’t wait more, he pulled the trigger and started pummeling them with lead. One by one they fell. Boris screamed in pain, he couldn’t go on more. I turned and saw a puddle of blood next to him.

-BORIS! Come on, COME HERE! I untied the boat, freedom is at hand.

-Go on, leave me here. I am a traitor.

-Don’t moan like that. This isn’t the place for sweet talk and stuff. Listen to me, obey my order!

-Please don’t waste your time, you deserve to live more than I do.

No option was left. I went into the boat. The thought that I was a coward hit my heart, but I couldn’t do anything. I once more shouted at Boris: “COME ON, BROTHER! I WON’T TELL THE STAFF FOR YOUR BETREYAL! WE NEED TO GO!”

He turned around to say something, but a bullet pierced through his chest right before my eyes. Dropped his rifle and fell in the puddle of blood. Boris was no more… I started paddling as fast as I could with the power that was left in me. The troops’ screams started to slice through the silence again.

            -Halt! Halt! Halt!

Bullets were sweeping pass me. Suddenly I felt pain in my stomach. I looked down and saw a stream of blood coming out of it. My eyesight started to blur, I fell down unconscious. I don’t know what happened next, but I woke up at a Russian hospital. I was lying in bed, next to some other patients. I was awarded the title “Hero of the Soviet Union” after recovering.”

-Grandpa, this is an awesome story! We can’t believe so many things happened to you!-his grandchildren cheered. He himself had tears in his eyes from the memories. He continued:

-Boris was a traitor, but I owe him my life. Thanks to him I am now standing in front of you. I saw him die in front of my eyes and couldn’t do anything. After those long 72 years, I still remember Boris. I still want to thank him for what he did, even though he is dead.-the old man’s eyes were calm and he looked sad. But his face had the expression of a calm and nice person. He was sitting on his coach, and his chest was covered in thousands of medals. He was surrounded by his family.-Eh, Boris…”

There was a knock on the door, his son opened it. At first, the old man couldn’t see who it was, but when the covered with snow stranger came in, he immediately smiled and hugged him.

-W-who are you?-asked the stunned veteran.

            -Boris!-answered the stranger.

It was really Boris. The mark on his arm from that shot is how the veteran later recognized him. The 2 old friends, with tears in their eyes, sat down in the cozy warm room and started to speak about the old times.

-Sorry Boris, that I left you over there. I want to thank you and say that I am sorry, but It’s too late.

            -It’s never too late...

Chapter 4 Escape

I dash through the corridors the germans quickly pursuing me. A quick shot from a handgun reverberates around me. Boris the man who I thought was my friend was losing blood fast and even though he had betrayed me he had always been there. Every battle, every bullet, every tank he was there. It was either shoot him and triple my speed or drag his wounded body with me and get caught by the german soldiers. I made my decision with haste and thinking about how boris had been a double agent for who knows long I decided he might be a valuable specimen to interrogate. I quickly rounded a corner and found myself face to face with a wall.

Trapped. I could hear the german soldiers footsteps getting closer and closer. I could only think this was the end. NO it could not end this way, I shoved boris against the wall and thought “How will I ever get out of here” I looked around helplessly, then I noticed a little crawl space under a cracked desk that was just small enough for my body to squeeze through. My fate before me. I saw out of the corner of my eye the germans who had been running for a while opened fire. I grabbed boris and pushed him toward the tunnel  and just as we were no further than two feet away his chest exploded. Riddled with bullets his body twitched and turned as blood sprayed out of him. The Irony taste of blood found my mouth and I found myself spitting and gagging to try to relieve myself of the horror that was illuminated before me. I throw Boris's bloodied body behind me and make a run for the pipe. A bullet whizzed past my ear as another hit me in my leg. I stumbled and bashed my head against the wall. My survival instincts kick in and i pull out my Heckler and Koch USP and fired back spraying bullets in all directions . With have of my body inside the shaft I spray  my bullets at the germans. 2,3,4 germans down I could already tell that there were too many to match so i pushed off and fell down… down.... down.

Darkness… Thats all I remember. Then a light, the only happy thing in the world. Seeing my comrades pull my out of that disgusting bloody pipe. I was heaved onto one of our trucks and some of our medics began working on my leg. They bandaged and stitched my bullet wound.

As we drove away the building where I had almost perished in exploded. Shrapnel and other debris flew up and cascaded all over the bloody ground where all those men had perished. That last vision. The one that will be burned into my memory forever.  Of the bright pink and blue sky reverberated with the bloody street that will remind me off all the wars ahead of me and all of those before. This battle will never leave my mind. Never.

Part 4: Heroes

We are sprinting down the road, with Boris clutching his arm. We turn the corner, trying to find the right path.

“How could you betray our homeland like that, Boris?” I say to him angrily.

“I just wanted freedom.”

“What do you mean, freedom? How can you not love the excitement of war?”

“You don’t understand, I just—”

I wait for him to finish, when he just stops. I look up and see a wall. I realize that we’re trapped!

“Boris, what should we do? I know you have betrayed me, but please, do something.”

“I…I…I don’t know.”

I was about to draw my sidearm, when I hear the cry of “Stopp” and I turn around with dread.

“Legen Sie Ihre Hände!”

I do what they say, when Boris suddenly acts, and tries to take my sidearm and shoot them, only to be shot down.

“Bewegen Sie sich nicht, oder du bist nächsten.”

Boris is crying in pain, and I want to help him, but I know they will shoot me. The 6 Germans surround me and I drop my sidearm. They escort me, guns drawn, back to where we were, leaving Boris behind. I bow my head in defeat, shame, and most of all, fury. I can’t believe Boris would betray me. I am such a fool for going in to save him. I should have left him to die. I can’t believe I even considered him a brother. Well, I guess I’ll just have to see what my fate is. I see where we will stop, when suddenly; shots rang out from behind us. I see a German fall, and I look behind to see Boris!

The Germans are caught off guard and more shots rang out, two more fall. There are still three more Germans, and I realize that Boris might run out of ammo, so I quickly act and pick up a gun of a German. The 3 Germans alive try to stop me, but I am too fast and I shoot one of them. Suddenly, I hear Boris cry out in pain. I turn around and use the butt end of my gun to knock 1 German down. The other German jumps on me and we start wrestling.

He is on top of me, but I quickly flip him around. However, he is too strong and flips me over again, this time, pinning me to the ground. He pulls out a pocket knife and I look at his eyes, seeing the hatred in them. I realize, with sadness, that this is how it’s going to end for me. I close my eyes and wait for my death, when I hear a shot ring out. I open my eyes and see the last German collapse. I look up and see Boris on his knees, and then, collapsing.

I spring up and run over to him. Blood is everywhere, and I realize there isn’t enough time.

“Boris, why did you come? You could have ran off and be free. Why, Boris?”

“Nikolai, you were like a brother to me. I couldn’t leave you behind. I wanted to show you that I really didn’t betray you.

“But Boris—”

“No, listen to me Nikolai, promise me one thing.”

“What?”

“When you go back, promise me you take care of other soldiers like me. There are more of them. Please help them before they end up like me.”

“But, I…I…I don’t know Boris.”

“You must Nikolai, you must.”

“Boris? Wake up! You can’t die Boris, you can’t. Nooooo!”

“Why!!!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Epilogue:

I am cheering with joy as we have won the war. The Germans have given up.

“Boris, I wish you were here, so many great things happened. I did what you asked Boris; I saved the ones you said needed help.”

And with that, I finally relax.

four hours of terror

I thought I had it all until I met the man, drunken-looking, side-whiskered with an inflamed face who I figured was probably the German unit commander. He looked old, maybe in his late 40’s.

I had three bullets left in my magazine. I counted about seven to eight Germans behind me. For a reason they were not shooting me, maybe they wanted me alive. I got this feeling that they were not going to show any pity on Boris too and I felt that Boris pretty much knew his death was not far. Drops of perspiration appeared on our faces.  He was holding his right hand which was soaked in blood with his left hand. I had an idea and which probably was my only chance to escape. I had to take a shot. Boris was a few inches before me. I grabbed his shoulder and pointed my gun at his neck. ‘Stop, stay where you are. ’I said coldly. ‘If you move an inch forward then I shall…well, you know what will happen to Boris. Put down your weapons.’ And it seemed to work, I could get away with the help of Boris. I inched forward slowly. I thought of going back to building they took me to. I had seen arms in there.

It was a few steps before I reached the building. My gun was still pressing against Boris’ neck. I went In. I had a few minutes before they would get to me. The deal was I had forgotten which room they had taken me to. As I walked in the depths of the building I heard some voices coming deep from inside. I decided to follow the voices. It lead me up a stair case. The voices became louder as I kept walking deeper inside the building. Finally it lead me to a room, I leant against the wall that was right next to the door of the room which the voices seemed to originate from. I snatched a glimpse inside the room to discover a man. He had a swollen looking face and looked drunken who I figured was probably the commander of the German troupes. He was talking to a young man with serious looking black eyes and a French beard who may have been a young soldier. “It is not over…plant bomb…Russia…T minus-4-hours.” I figured they were talking about bombing Russia. I knew that moment I had to escape from this completely destroyed city and report my seniors about this matter. Before I knew it, it was too late, I could hear the heavy footsteps of the German armies. The next second I was surrounded by the German troupes. I knew I had to somehow escape from there but I also knew that they were not falling for the same trick again. One of them shot a bullet right on my gun and it slipped from my hand. I could see some kind of weird looking weapon in one of their hands. Before I even could duck to pick up my gun I was shot by the weird looking weapon which I then realized was some sort of a human tranquillizer.

My eyes awoke by a familiar smell but I could not remember what the smell was of. I was lying on the hard ground of some kind of a prison. I needed to get out of there. I needed to somehow inform anybody I could about the Germans plan. I needed to know how much time had passed since I was unconscious. Where was Boris? I had all questions in my mind and was at loss of answers. Though this isn't the first time I have been caught by my rivals but this was different.

I felt a sudden hoped of something good. I then recognized the smell, it belonged to your very own Russian tanks. I rose in joy. Finally in was over, victory filled the air. But I was still not aware of what was coming. Minutes later I was greeted by a comrade of my dear motherland. I told him everything but it seemed as they were not aware of the bomb. There was hardly 30 minutes left. I rushed outside and climbed into our fitter jet and sped away towards Russia. I spotted their plane. I had one missile in it but it was enough to crush them to death. When I was about 500 meters away I fired it and closed my eyes, praying that it hits the target. Seconds later my eyes were blinded with a bright explosion. We had saved Russia. I may thank Boris for that.

Part 4: The Escape

I threatened to kill Boris. I asked Germans “isn't he important to you”. They said” No, we don’t need him, he is a total waste of our time all we needed is just you”. Boris asked me “Hey guys aren't you with me how could you say that”. I replied “OMG!  Boris, it seems like you made same very good friends. Now, I asked him are you with me?” He said yes. Then we discuss to find a way to escape from these Germans.  He asked me to give me what I have. He gave him a smoke bomb. He said to me to pass the bomb.  “I've got a plan”. A plan …. to throw the bomb near to the vault. And move to the underground tunnel and we should run as fast we could” I said. He said “But I thought that...” No, Boris I am not that kind of man. I didn't expect that kind of thoughts from you.  Finally he said that I'm sorry and I doubted him. He said its okay.  I asked him  to come on. He said” No, I just feel like bursting into tears.” I replied that was the shortest way to the airport. He amused and asked” What? Airport I can’t believe”. I said everywhere is raided by the Germans. But” What exactly do they want from me”. I told them you would be a good help. Since you were in a high official. I think they want to capture our territory too.

“It was already evening Boris. We could stay here till dawn. “” We must be vigilant at the same time” I said and I stayed for the night without sleep. Boris fell asleep. In middle of the night same Germans passed that way. I got up and pulled Boris to the corner.  Boris said” We survived till dawn, thanks for you’re dozing off””Oh, I am sorry”. He said that we should be in disguise. I said “It’s not a problem we can go like this, but we must be careful” After some minutes we headed to the airport, and then we hit two German cops and took their uniforms and ID’s. We went near to the ticket centre of the port. And they asked us our ID. We said that “We are Lieutenant Alexander and Russell”. They said” Oh, Sirs you are welcome aboard”. Then some officials saw us but our heads were down. “Hey lieutenants” we heard a voice of an officer. “It’s like you are about to go aboard”. “Yes we are” we replied. He asked any objections. No sir we said. He asked why that our voices are strange. We said that “We are practising for Russian accent” He said “OK, Sirs have a good day”. We were entering the plane, and then suddenly two people ran towards us “Stop them, they are culprits.” I tried to avoid the scene but a man took my gun and shot them.  We were highly shocked. And that officer thanked me for the gun. I had a smile outside but inside deeply feared.  My friend asked me to relax. I took a deep breath and sated myself on the seat. I thought everything was over. While we are boarded. I said” Thank God. You are great”. Then pilot made an announcement” We are sorry for inconvenience, but due to certain problem we are going to turn back the plane”

Boris: OMG!! Here we go again…

Chapter 4

The begging of the worst

I wondered if the German or Russian Soldier as he said was lying. My mind Glazed of crazy Ideas. The Early morning breeze filled the background of terror! fear! and destruction. I was not paying attention to the conversation boris and the Russian Soldier were having.

Suddenly the Soldier walked away calmly and then I wondered what the conversation was about. "What is going on?!!"I asked boris.

"We are leaving this place" He said. "Really!! Wait how,it's a long walk and it will take us time" I thought how we were going to leave. It was imposible!! "Boris, please tell me!!" I shouted to him. "Please calm down, you want to know how we are getting out of here? then look whats hidden after those bushes" I did not say a word. I just walked toward the bushes. I crept into the bushes and.... "Howley Cow!!"

"A tank!!" I said shocked. "Yes,you will have your tank and I will ave mine and we will communicate by these walkie talkie's" He said softly as he crept thru the bushes with me. He handed me the Radios. "Ok,you might be scared but we will creep thru the side borded of all these building and pass the German unit, after that we are safe and we will camp in a place called....hmm Silence!!" He said. I thought the plan was risky but I could do it. "Okay,I got it. Lets start" I said bravely as a Hopped into my tank. I put the switch on.

The engine roared. The tank shaked. I reached for the controls. I could feel the power. I hit the pedal as my tank spit out pebbles out the side. "Are you after me" I asked on the radio. "Yeah, by the way the commander is protecting us from long Range with a tank he found with a sniper turret called "Shaft". He has our backs so concetrate on the front ok" He explaned. "Got it don't worry" I replied as I hung the Radio Back in place. "Germans!!!!!" I shouted from the Radio. "Fire,it's a order" Said the commander on the radio. I reached at the red button. It's soft feeling. I pressed it. As soon as I pressed it mud flew everywhere and explosions filled the buildings. Had our End came? I rushed thru the German units, blasting with my machine guns.

To Be continued.

Tanki Story by benjiblob part 4

this is Boris’ POV

Part 4: The Escape

I led Nikolai very far from the battlegrounds. I led him past the dead bodies, the burning and burnt buildings. I hope all our spies escaped from them.

Anyways, right in the middle of God-knows-where Berlin, I ceased to put one foot in front of the other. I mean, we did have to stop at some point, and we were certainly quite under cover here in this alleyway. The building on the right was built so that the middle was dented, sort of. We would be out of view from both ends of the block.

We lingered in the area, trying to figure out if it was a good choice of a place to pick for staying overnight. We concluded that the place was as good as any other. “I’ll take the first watch.” Nikolai pronounced to me. That obviously implied that he was nowhere near the point where he would trust me again. But I was much too fatigued to argue.

I stayed awake for virtually the whole night. Well, maybe not, but it certainly seemed so. I reflected on what I had done in the past few hours. Why had I lost my mind? I was so gullible. I was being a coward, not standing up to those evil Germans. It was the total opposite of Nikolai. I betrayed him in the worst time possible-- when he had already fought so hard, so valiantly for us. And I turned against him! But somehow, he is trying to help me again, helping me to be like him. The kind of guy who will never panic, who thinks things through. I would have no right to blame him if he never forgives me.

*  *  *

11:44 pm

I woke, shivering. It was nearly pitch-black. I tried to see through the darkness, looking for Nikolai. My first attempt at it was successful: There he was, fast asleep, about 4 feet to the left. I moved myself being oh so cautious, listening for any movement other than me. In what seemed to be about 2 years, I completed the task of crawling over to him.

There was a note under his head. It was folded up into perfect eighths. Now, oblivious to anything but this mysterious note, I opened it up as a little child would a present.

It was in Morse code. Fortunately, I was able to interpret it since all of us are required to memorize the Morse code system. In normal english, it offered this message to us:

I am getting you at noon to take you out of here. Stay exactly in your current location.

Those were probably the easiest instructions anyone would ever have to follow. There was no secret message you would see when holding under a light at a certain angle. It seemed too good to be true.

* * *

Morning eventually came, and so I woke up Nikolai. I told him of my shenanigans from the past night, and asked if he could recall anything.

“Well, I remember closing my eyes because I was so dreary all of a sudden. But if someone put me to sleep using some medicine, he couldn’t have been bad because he didn’t physically hurt us.”

“What about poison?” I inquired.

“Well, do you remember what he did to you?”

“I was already asleep.”

“Then I guess we’ll have to find out.”

I smiled. It was quite clear that he was able to trust me again, hopefully once-and-for-all.

So, we sat there until the sun was at it’s peak in the sky. For some reason, we were completely isolated. No one came near us. We know that because we heard nothing break the dead silence except for ourselves. That is, until noon.

A tall, frightening man with huge feet slowly turned into the alley from the left. We started scooting backward, suddenly afraid. His image was menacing.

“Stop,” he said in a very deep voice. “Do not be afraid of me.” He showed us an ID card that read Karl Hoffman: German Spy and flashed a picture placed that was under those words.

I gulped and stood up. Nikolai’s eyes widened. “That’s a fake!!” He proclaimed. I have no idea how he figures these things out.

“Oh sorry.” the man said. “Wrong one!” Then he chuckled. He pulled out a second ID card.

This one is not a fake, is it, Nikolai?”

“N-no. It is not.” he stammered. We blanked on how this man knew Nikolai’s name. This ID card read: Aleksey Volkov: Proud Spy of Russia! and also presented a  picture identical to the previous one at the bottom.

Aleksey spoke again. “I am the one who put Nikolai to sleep. And in case you were wondering exactly why nobody came for you, it is because my team has set up a blockade.”

Our mouths fell open as the truth came hurtling towards us.”And you should be capable of figuring out by now that I did leave the Morse code note.”

I squinted. I could swear I had seen this man before, I just forget where.

“Ah yes, I see you recognize me from Koingsburg.”

Yeah, that was it!

“Anyway, that is beside the point. My task right now is to get you out of here safely and discreetly. I have found a secret path that barely avoids the German Base. They assume no one else knows about it, so it is unguarded. If we leave at 8 pm, we should be fine, because it will be moderately dark, and the Germans have no need to use the path at that time.”

That seemed as good of a plan as any, so we agreed. “Nikolai, we’re saved!!” I yelled as loud as possible.

Boom. Then a scream. People were heading this way! We  took our chances and ran 2 blocks down the road to the left. The 1 guy on the opposite side did not glance over to us. We turned into the first unlocked door we could find, then sprinted to the 5th floor. From there, we could still effortlessly make out the gunshots raging outside. But to our amazement, no one came in. I had no idea of what this building was used for anyway.

Aleksey took us to the elevator, and directed us to jump in. He pressed a complex combination of buttons, and I only saw him touch floors 3, 5, and 6. His hands went much too fast for me. Nikolai would've been able to explain exactly what the man was doing, but there was no time now. The elevator took us all the way underground, into the passageway. We jogged down it passing 5 forks and always being told to turn left. It felt like a whole lifetime’s worth of running. But in what felt like minutes, I saw bright light that we realized was the sun’s. We were okay....for now.

THE END
