I just had to post the original to clear my auditory palate.  This is one of those songs that just doesn't cover very well because of the singer's powerful and unique voice.   ...anyone else think she has kind of an unusually large mouth?

Deep Forest was a kind of period phenomon that sort of morphed out of the pelothora of insipid and mostly vapid New Age Music.  Sadly their the unique sound became dated very quickly.  I always thought of it as ambient new age electronic tribal music...uhh, yeah.  Anyway, this collaboration with Peter Gabriel, a champion of world and ethnic music, pretty much kicks butt.

While the World Sleeps (this song's title) is from the end credits and is actually an intergral part of the story.  The movie was very good and this song on the end credits topped it off nicely.  The actual soundtrack ends at about 2:20, but some bozo dj dork appearantly decided to extend the soundtrack with his remix skills.

Deep Forest's biggie hit compressed into audio hell, but it's vaguely listenable..it's much less repetitive and more interesting with good fidelity.

Peter Gabriel is so diverse and has so many great tunes, it's hard to pick, but here is some da funk.

Robbie Robertson, another giant of rock that runs under the mainstream.  He has so many great songs, it's hard to choose.  I thought of this one because of Peter Gabriel on keyboard and singing in the background.

There is an ambient intro to about 0:50...then a subtle statement of the main theme to about 1:25 where the verse rolls to the beautiful refrain at 2:05.  From this point the song is in full swing.

Did Robbie Robertson write this song for me?  Probably not, but it does strike a chord here and there.  ;)

what an amazing singer and song this is

carly simon was just one of the best

Dude!  ...Dude!   I totally forgot about this song from C.S.  I really like it too!   I had a major celebrity crush on Carly Simon when I was a little whipper-snapper...it may have been the No Secrets album cover.  Anyway, you missed a golden opportunity to post Ms Simon dancing and fooling around to this song...I just found this on YT after your post (thank you so much!).  It looks like it may have been from a TV show...maybe it was the video released with the song....dunno...but it's cool to see Carly being the beautiful young woman she once was.

Can you explain those first two sentences? Anyway, HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA is a legendary internet-meme. I love it.

I wish I grew up in 90's to experience rudiments and popularizations of all the legendary titles. I feel just like the guy in that linked thread. I am not into this decade, I don't like 95% music of it.  -_-

most likely she either smiled a lot, or she's a direct descendant of Mick Jagger :D

:)

That's a very nice track.. but somehow the volume of the electronic main theme and the meldoic part feel like they try to kick each other out of the song. Maybe because of compression or I have would have to connect the laptop to the hifi in order to get out most of it. Still I like that one :)

I think I posted that one already once, but as Epica shouted about Silence, I remembered this one:

Sure..."I just had to post the original to clear my auditory palate."  This He-Man meme kind of grates on my ears and every time I hear it I need to go back to the original recording of the song to get the He-Man version out of my head.  I posted it here just in case anyone needed to do the same thing or might not have been familiar with the original.  ...How could anyone not know the original you ask?  My own daughter played the He-Man meme for me not long ago and was shocked to hear that it was based on an early 90's tune.

"This is one of those songs that just doesn't cover very well because of the singer's powerful and unique voice."   This is harder to explain since it is just my own opinion. But I'll try.  Linda Perry, the singer for 4 Non Blondes, has a very strong voice.  The timbre of her voice is also rather unique and unusual.  These two qualities combined make What's Up have a very specific sound.  This vocal sound in conjunction with the...........gosh...too much....It's a very catchy song that becomes an earworm very easily.  Because it's hard to get the original out of your head, the song doesn't lend itself to covers because the cover makes you hear the original regardless of the cover version.  Almost any cover version is doomed from the beginning to be "less than" the original...the covers tend to be relegated to "imitations" rather than a new treatment of the original song. Anyway, this is just my pretty much worthless opinion and somebody might come up with a great cover version...I just haven't heard one yet.

I guess that what I'm trying to say is sometimes a vocal quality becomes synonymous with a particular song in our collective minds...kind of unfunny memes in a way.  This makes those particular songs hard to cover.

I hope I didn't offend you...that was no where near my intention.  Music is music and we like what we like exactly for the reason we like it.

And as far as the time frame goes for music, I think history will show the 10s and coming 20's as one of the most innovative and prolific times in pop music's history.  Just the tonnage of music being produced now and in the near future almost mandates that there will be absolutely great memorable tunes being generated...way more than any other decade.  Why?  Because any musician can be heard now via the internet venues...it is also easier to realize your own idea of music because of innovations in computer programs related to music.  Look at Garage Band from Apple...OMG!  It's an orchestra or rock band in your pocket.  Synthesia for the keyboard inclined, transcription software, drum machines, samplers, vocaloids, sound editors, and bunches of other computer doo-dads that never existed before...even in the 90s.   Right now you can go online and lay down great trax in literally seconds on dozens of sites. Here is one: JamStudio  And another type: BassButton

This is a very very exciting time in pop music....there will be incredible music that comes from this period in time, retrospect will help sift the chaff that clutters up every era in pop music and will leave lots of memorable great tunes.

Incidentally, click this awesome meme.
