Is Friendly Fire Expected

It happened me even today as somebody on my team was firing at me and blocking my shot while I was fighting it out with another tank at short range. We all were in the open, so there were no corners or trees that would make my team mate think I was an enemy tank.

 

I understand this happening from a recruit or occasionally happening when someone rounds a corner or something like that, but what about this crazy behavior?
