Promotions for Underused Maps

How about promoting underused maps by running a periodic double crystal (or 50% more crystals) special for a day on the least used map since the last promotion?

 

Tanki has a lot of variety built into it already in its catalog of available maps, but it is hard to get games going outside of the eight or so most popular maps.

Great idea!!

This would help cut down on topics trying to get new maps, and help tankers learn more about the game. :)

I have seen the topic of underused maps come up frequently lately and this seems like an interesting idea.  One of the things that I noticed is that certain maps are popular and therefore have more game choices so I actively seek them out first.  Another issue, less obvious, is that large maps have a lot of lag and low frame rates for some players, making them unplayable and that certain configurations leave certain hull and turret combinations at a disadvantage.  (Larger, open maps favor snipers and small hull long range weapons.  Closed spaces with lots of flat walls favor ricochet.)  Few maps are good for all hulls and turrets and these are not coincidentally the most popular maps.

I've noticed the same thing.

But if there is 50% more crystals to be had, well....they would play on maps like Scope again.  :)

It would be nice to have promotions for rare maps. I'm a fan of diversity and I explored every single map there is. Some of my favourite maps (like Deathtrack) are the rarest, so it would be nice to see a lot of battles there every once in a while. Although do keep in mind that the "double funds on a different map every day" technique wouldn't work as every day 99% of the maps on all servers would be filled with that one map, which is no good.

 

In my opinion, instead of saving rare maps, the issue should be prevented in the first place by informing newbies about new unlocked maps. Otherwise they have the 4-5 maps unlocked and they play on those maps, unaware that new maps are being unlocked as they rank up. A really simple way to solve this issue is to add the new unlocked maps at the end of the list of things you unlock when you get a new rank, seen in the window which appears after you exit the battle where you got the rank. Such a small addition will make a huge difference as people will actually know that they unlocked new maps and they will want to try them out.

Totally agree! I want short bridge back in the game.

Yeah, that was a popular map when I was recruit, and I loved it...until Moon Silence came out, then I had a new favorite. (along with everyone else)

My favorite "new" old map is Gubakha.  I have entered a couple of very high rank games in which half the players are trying to figure out where the flags are.  :)

How about Tanki just having one of each map in each list every day when the servers restarts?

I wasn't thinking of this as an every day thing.  I was thinking of seeing this a couple times a month or maybe in sync with new vlog releases.

 

I disagree that it would result in an overload of whatever map is being promoted based on the popularity of the Halloween and New Year special maps and when Rio was first released.  Those got a lot of play, but they did not completely crowd out the most popular maps.

 

Edit to add:  Duh!  I failed to realize how much the extra battle funds would affect things when I made the comparison to holiday maps.  Sorry.

it doesn't have to be a daily or even a weekly thing? Wouldn't this work if they did it maybe once a month or once every few months?

This is a great idea! Yesterday, I was playing on my second account, and I realised that I could play on Red Alert when I decided to create a battle. However, even on this account, I always though that I had a few more ranks to go before I could play on it! This idea would make more maps realised!!!

Maybe when badges/achievements come out, this will be easier to do?

Perhaps there could be an achievement, say, if you achieved a certain number of losses/victories in a certain map?

That's a good idea, too. Or something like getting a certain score on every map. Or maybe even catching a gold box on every map! Oh my god, think of how much more so many maps would be played then!!!

Maybe not one, but a certain number of maps would have 50% more crystals, and as a result, enabling more Gold Boxes. (by the way, I'm sick of hearing "gold plz" or "admin drop gold please" or "gold please admin".) I think that Tanki Online should tell everyone that Gold Boxes do NOT work that way.

I don't know how well this will work because the popular maps are popular because they are functionally better maps to play.  I've played a lot of different maps and most of them are just irritating because of different problems:

 

1.  Too open:  It's all shafts and rail guns.

2.  Too easy to be ambushed by freeze, fire and shotgun

3.  Too far between the flags

4.  Too enclosed.

 

Balance is hard and most maps don't achieve it.
