Auto-Generating Maps

Recommended Posts

So I had an idea: WHY NOT MAKE A MAP THAT GENERATES DIFFERENTIALLY EVERY TIME? This would keep the element of surprise and make for some wild fun. Of course, the flags would stay generally in the same area, but the tunnels and passages and sniper positions would all change. What do you think?

It's a cool idea, but every time the battle ends you would see the loading screen. For players who have slow PCs, this would be frustrating, because once they finally load in, the battle is already 30-50 seconds in.

Hmm, good point deadtoyou, I hadn't thought about that. And yourdoomtoday, it would be some hard work, but tons of other online game sites already have that kind, and seen that Tanki Online is a pretty vast game, I don't think that would be the main issue.

It would be possible if the auto-generating maps are simple, flat arenas with stuff on them. The system would randomly choose a rectangular enclosed area like Desert and put a whole stuff on it like bridges, fences, bushes, houses... It wouldn't be as exciting as the more complicated multi-level maps, but the fun would be in having a new map in every game.

That might work....but in the Unity version of Tanki, everything will have a LOT more detail..meaning that this idea would cause even more lag, and would be harder for the Devs to create.

I don't see it being possible ever. Developing such a process (if its even possible) would take twice as long as the transition to Unity currently is taking (but what do I know about programing).  Although, I would love not having to play the same 15 maps over and over and have something that every player that joins the  battle has to adapt to. But this is not Minecraft.

There are way more than 15 maps in the game, so you can have all variety you like. However, in the case of randomly generating maps, then as I said - It would be fairly easy to make a code that randomly places a whole bunch of objects on a large, flat map. Obviously we can't expect three-dimensional maps with multiple levels generated randomly with no bugs.

I saw this feature in game Age of Empires 3 but of course it's not Tanki.AOE is a game which you have to download+it's made by Microsoft as far as I know.Still this would be an awesome feature :)

I'm pretty sure this isn't possible in Flash.

I think it would be possible. Though it would have to be a newly generated map like every hour, not every time it is created... The real issue would be making sure it doesn't fall into any sort of pattern, while remaining diverse, and providing dynamic gameplay.
