If Gold dropped right after the siren, then only the players nearest the drop point would get it, having a 20 second timer makes it fair for everyone and cuts down on Gold Box campers.

The 20 seconds waiting time allows you to prepare for the gold box drop and take up a strategic position. It builds up tension, brings out excitement and adrenaline in tankers - that's why people love it so much. The instant drop of the gold box makes it really random and not as interesting. IMHO it's perfect the way it is now.
