Notifications not where they're supposed to be

Usually we get notifications in that icon with a person's face on it (next to messages button) but whenever I subscribe to a topic, I get the notifications in my email, not the notifications bar, where I want it to be. How do I rectify this?

Go to "My settings" in your profile menu and to to notification setting.On right side you will see notifications by email. Uncheck

 

 

every item that you don't like.
