Open testing of the mouse controls!

Tankers!

Today we invite you to take part in the first open testing of the mouse controls!

Two control options are available for testing:

  • In windowed mode, the camera follows the hull, while the aiming cursor on the screen determines the direction you are firing at. To switch to the usual mouse cursor for using the menu, press and hold the right mouse button.
  • In fullscreen mode, the turret turns in the direction where the camera is pointed, which is closer to the traditional keyboard controls. Holding the right mouse button blocks the turret’s turning and gives you an ability to look around without turning the turret. To switch to the usual mouse cursor for using the menu, press and hold the TAB key.

In both modes, you shoot by clicking the left mouse button, and use the mouse wheel to adjust the camera view. You can only turn your turret left and right in the new control modes. Vertical aim has remained automatic.

Switching between mouse and keyboards controls is possible anytime, with a right click or pressing turret control keys on a keyboard.

You can join the open testing here. Make sure you return to this thread to share your impressions!

what is the Invite code?

Well, for my first go at testing, that was a bit of a shock to the system - but I won't go into that here!

Issues I have found that are a problem for me:

In full-screen mode the camera zoom is controlled by moving the mouse backwards and forwards AND by the mouse scroll wheel. This is a problem as moving the mouse causes angle of view changes when I don't want them, and I have to keep re-adjusting it. I think the camera zoom should only be controlled by the scroll wheel - as in windowed mode.

When exiting 'full-screen mouse control' via the ESC key to go back to 'windowed mouse control', I can no longer turn the turret with the mouse and there is no 'circle' pointer on the screen - but I can still fire with the mouse. I can only reactivate the mouse turret 'turning' ability by pressing a keyboard turret control key first. I think you should be able to switch from using mouse control in full-screen to mouse control in windowed mode without using the keyboard controls in between.

In windowed mode there is a couple of big problems IMO regarding gameplay:

Because the front of the hull is your camera view, you cannot hide behind a wall by having the hull parallel to it whilst turning turret at right angles to face the enemy. The hull has to face the same direction - so you can't peep around corners.

Also, you have to turn the hull around to see the enemy who's firing behind you so you can target them whilst continuing to drive away, which is much slower than just quickly turning the turret and firing whilst driving in the same direction as you was before. You will probably die before you get a chance to shoot back.

--------

I think there will be pros and cons to using the mouse instead of the keyboard - which will depend upon personal preferences.

Tanki is the first game I've played using just a keyboard - I've played FPS for many years using mouse and arrow keys.  I didn't think I would ever get the hang of using full keyboard controls, but I'm not doing too badly now.

It doesn't feel quite right using a mouse with this game after getting used to the keyboard - but no doubt many will learn to use the mouse and will then find that keyboard only controls won't seem right or natural to them. If the mouse had been an option when I first joined, I would not have even attempted to learn the keyboard only controls.

At the moment I feel more 'at one' with the tank after getting used to the keyboard, so I don't want to mess that up by using the mouse too much.

I am still a 'noob', and not really in your typical type of demographic, but I hope some of this makes sense!

It still feels kinda weird to me to aim to a direction other than the screen view :P I'd rather stick to the familiar keys. Though it's very fun- first time in my test server! ^_^

You know, i'd like to have the ability to switch from keyboard to mouse without shooting immediately- this way you can toggle the mouse-key aiming and kill an enemy around the corner with no need to shoot for no reason and then reload. Maybe if you keep holding space/lmb? well idk, but i'd still love to see something like that before it's officially released to the game. This way it ill make life for you easy and give a hard time to your enemies!

I was in the test server this morning and I test the mouse control. It's really easy to aim and shoot, but it's harder to control the tank, because the camera is turning to fast with the turret. I'll continue to play with keyboard controlls.
