NBC anchor Brian Williams 'temporarily' steps down

US NBC anchor Brian Williams has said he is temporarily taking himself off air, days after apologising for wrongly saying he came under fire in Iraq.

Williams said it had become "painfully apparent" that he was too much a part of the news.

He repeatedly told a story about being shot down in a helicopter in Iraq but veterans disputed his account.

Williams, the most-watched network anchor in the US, blamed the "fog of memory" for the lapse.

In a statement, he said he would not be presenting his nightly show for several days while the network investigated his claims.

"Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us," he added.

Media analysts approved Williams's decision.

'I made a mistake'

On Wednesday, Williams made an apology on air over the Iraq story.

"I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago," he said. "I want to apologise. I said I was travelling in an aircraft that was hit by RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] fire. I was instead in a following aircraft."

His apology came after veterans who were on the helicopter that was hit challenged his version of events.

One of them, Flight engineer Lance Reynolds, wrote: "Sorry dude, I don't remember you being on my aircraft. I do remember you walking up about an hour after we had landed to ask me what had happened."

Some critics were not satisfied by Wiliiams's apology, calling for his resignation.

Questions have also been raised about his coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with one health official challenging a claim he contracted dysentery reporting on the event.

A 'good move'

Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies at New York City's Fordham University, called Williams's move a good idea for him and NBC News.

"It gives him a chance to catch his breath and, on a human level, it must be excruciating to get on the air and report the news and not say anything about this," he told AP News agency.

NBC News, Prof Levinson added, wanted to "be in the business of reporting on the news, and not have people thinking, `is he telling the truth?'''

Richard Hanley, director of the graduate programme in journalism at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, welcomed a "good move by Williams and the network".

"It would be difficult for the audience to pay attention to what he's reading in terms of the news when the perception is all about this scandal," he told Reuters news agency.

Become one of the people that makes unofficial newspapers and creates useless topics to get more attention? Nah, no thank you. I'll pass.

If you don't like writing, don't join. Only people who can know the real aim of this team are welcome. Thank you for your suggestion, even though it was harsh, but we'll not take that. ;)

without any prize why should we do this

According to bluelight the prize is that you'll be accepted in their team. That unofficial newspaper one.

I do like writing, but if you are talking about a prize, make it a good prize. Most people in Tanki want crystals and great tanks. So I recommend your team to get better prizes for winners than just being a member of an unofficial Tanki Team.

I rather be apart of the official Newspaper team then apply for this because the last time you guys did this it fell apart. These sort of topics will just spam the Off-Topic Discussion section. Posting it in Creativity would be easier.

Why do you need a prize for writing? Any good writer knows that you shouldn't have to get paid or rewarded for writing. Therefore if you are asking for a prize I don't think you are a very good writer at all.

If this was real life, I wouldn't even bother to ask for a prize.

But this is a game, and we all want a prize. What if you have defeated the best Clan in Starladder and you don't get a prize? That's the same thing everyone here feels.
