Why Are Large Maps Unpopular?

Recommended Posts

So, if players still won't leave their old habits, then make it miserably inefficient for them to play on small maps by lowering the Complexity Coefficient to below 0.5 so that Polygon/Silence/Sandbox/etc

For laggers who complain about increased lags in large maps; don't play in large maps! Actually it's better for everyone else if you don't play there!

text in yellow is your,OP

so,propose solution for "laggers who complain about incresed lag in large maps"..how the heck do you think that "laggers" will earn if yours "brilliant idea" ever gets implemented?..before you propose selfish ideas like this, please, remember that not anyone can have means to play in every possible situation..beacuse you love/can play battles on big maps, everyone else should be forced too?..elaborate!

Yes, also crowded games are causing lags.

Big maps can't be crowded because of lots of area.

maybe they can't be crowded, but they still cause much more laggs then small/medium..maybe you have good computer, sadly,I don't..whenever I only try to eneter (and not just me),FPS drasticlly decrease from 3-8..my standard FPS is 25 with all effect and skybox turned off (medium maps)..I can't ever play big maps sadly..especially after "re-working"..before that,I played many CTF on kungur or red alert (no XP),now I can play red alert, but kungur almost impossible..I don't even need to say what happens to me on bigger maps

Again, an issue is born from Tanki's choise to make this game extremely money depended. That leads to increased need for crystals (that's why battles have become wilder in the last few months) and people started to pick maps and mode for a faster cry earning (Polygon CP) instead of playing a variety of maps just for fun.

a7x_Pedro48 wrote that he/she plays Polygon for crystals and Lost temple for fun. So true, so pathetic. That's the new Tanki. A petty pay-to-win or play-for-crystals-only game.

@swede1 - I've always been here, I don't post a lot but I've started complaining much recently! :(

And yes, as said before there are other reasons that cause players to play small maps and they will still remain popular, but at least why give players more incentive to stick to small maps by making fund growth more efficient there? This isn't the whole problem, but it's at least a significant part of it.

And for small map lovers, the idea is not to force everyone to play on large maps as much as it's about encouraging diversity for everyone, including small-medium map players. So, even certain small maps can have relatively high CC making them more profitable than other small maps.

For example, why don't you play CP on Arena, Boombox, Combe, Pass, Short Bridge, Station, Valley, etc.? There are many other fun-to-play small-medium maps than just Island, Polygon and Sandbox.

Most players just go for the maps they're familiar with without even trying most maps. This is not healthy!

Have you ever played an active battle on Gubakha or Tribute? Most players just enter to check out the map, say "I don't like it" and go search for a Silence battle. If they actually play on Gubakha or Tribute they may find out it works better for them than Silence or Polygon, but they won't even give it a chance!

Another thing, how come all those XP "pros" mostly play on childish maps like Sandbox? You call yourself a pro? Come play on Gubakha and let's see your skills!

I used to make "Join for cookies XP/BP" in all kind of maps that are unpopular, like Gubakha and Magistral,we got 10 players each team mostly,20 flags limit, and in Magistral always over 40K fund

Well, the reason I don't like large maps is simply because my FPS becomes about 1/4 as it is in medium maps. If it were not for this, I would play the big maps. Your reasoning that large maps get less fund because of the size is wrong. There are more players, so more deaths are happening all the time, which means bigger funds. The reason that large maps get lower funds is usually because they aren't full. So, the low fund happens from less players, not the other way around. If it were not for that one fact, this would be a great idea.

Large Maps are unpopular barbecue it takes a long time until the teams are full. Where as in sandbox xp or ploygon xp players join quickly. Large maps are also unpopular barbecue they last a very long time. Most players are unable to play for 2 hours straight. Therefore it is much more convenient to play fast paced small maps with a relatively small amount of players.

Why not? Why do you consider it not healthy?

I don't mean to "prove" that this idea is not good, I only wonder why do you think that playing a small amount of maps (mostly) is unhealthy.

Maybe they're unpopular because players find Tanki is about ranking up quickly to unlock m2's etc. xo by being in a big map they're getting less kills because they could be chasing them around for a while. Where with little maps they dont have much cover, you can attack easily, you kill quicker.

Simple, players on the same group of maps for days/months/years at a time is a detriment to the variety of the game. Only variable that changes in their perspective account is their equipment. When the variety of the game decreases to the point of dulling nothingness, then the more likely the player is to decrease playing of the game, thus the developers lose out eventually. You yourself prefer as much variety as possible, why does this not click?

@RustyNail - Vikingsrall gave an adequate explanation above.

I'm a living example of it, I used to spend long hours daily playing this game, but nowadays I rarely do. It just sickens me to look at the battle list and see all those dried out maps.

There are other reasons for frustration in this game, but the lack of variety is a major killer of interest, leading to early quitting.

Yes, there are more players to kill, but then there are more players to share the funds with.

Also, more players in the battle doesn't automatiocally mean more kills; in an 8x8 Polygon CP battle the total number of kills within a specific period of time can be way higher than the number of kills in a 16x16 Lost Temple within the same period of time, even though Lost Temple has double the number of players!

I really don't understand any of you.

In my mind Tanki should worry about how much, players like to play Tanki, not how many maps do they enjoy or worry why certain maps are not played much... If people don't like maps, they will complain and ask for more maps. If people don't complain about maps why Tanki bothers?

I myself like many maps. To be exact (and using a scale from 1 to 10), I like a little 12 maps (they get a 4-5), I like quite 16 maps (they get a 6-8) and I like alot 4 maps (they get 9-10), among them Serpuhov (10) and Kungur, Rio and Skyscrapers  (9). Do you know how many maps I usually play? Two. Serpuhov and whichever of the other 9s I find available. It's not that I wouldn't play maps of 6-8, it's I always prefer Serpuhov over them. That means I never get tired of Serpuhov, or almost never.

I would be the last man complaining for maps. Disliking some maps or wanting other, new maps. I have enough maps to last a couple of years. It's not maps or variety of maps I worry about, it's other issues (but let's not talk about it here).

So, why should all maps have an "equal" share of playing when players don't complain about it? If a player gets bored in a map, they will try another. Maybe months pass before one tries certain maps. What's wrong with that?

Of course I don't say that everybody thinks the way I do. But shouldn't Tanki use as a basic rule players' opinion? If players don't have an issue with that why should Tanki have?

(I am sorry for the way I write, as I often said, english is not my mother language and in my mother language I would be more coherent and precise)

EDIT: There are some factors that determine which map I play. Maybe this explains things to you.

Well, these factors are the following, in order of higher to lower importance.

1. The likeness of map. (first I search for Serpuhov, if I don't find any or if while searching the specific server I find a 9, I go there)

2. The number of players. If I find a favorit map but with only 1 or 2 players' teams, I don't enter. I want more players.

3. The duration of battle. This is a severe restriction. I mean, if I know or suspect I don't have much time, a 15 minutes is a must. Otherwise, 30 minutes (or 15 minutes, it dosn't matter) and only seldom a 60 minutes battle. (that means, if I don't have time and 10 or 9s maps are only in 30 minutes and above battles, I may go to one of 6-8s maps, if one is available)

2 and 3 are of the same importance.

4. battle mode. I mean, I always go for a CTF, but if I don't find any, I may settle for a TDM. Never a DM though.

5. If I still don't find a suitable battle, I GHANGE SERVER. I don't create a battle, almost never.

In that manner, it's most probable for me to end in a Serpuhov, or one of the 9s maps than in any of the others. And only seldom, I see a 4-6 map and I feel I missed it and go there straight.

I'm pretty good with this and it suits me just fine. And if my other (known) issues with Tanki where solved, the bigger problem would be that 24 hours wouldn't be enough to play all those maps I like.

I hope I made clear for you how some players deal with maps.

@RustyNail;

Wait until you attain the rank of Generalissimo, and then let us know how much fun it is for you! (You're gonna love all the drug clans/raiders and their fixed battles, by the way!)

You may have more motives to play the same map(s) day in, day out. Namely, you're looking forward to ranking up, unlocking new items in the garage and making enough crystals to purchase/upgrade equipment. None of these are relevant to me and many other players at my rank.

I also used to play only a few number of maps, and it was quite fun for me, until I reached the Gen. rank.

This game may be good at attracting new players, but it sucks at keeping them after they achieve the highest rank.

I would be more interested in this game if I could play Lost Temple (CTF) one day, Kolhoz (CP) another day, Opposition (CP) another, Red Alert (CTF) another, Berlin (CP) another, etc.

It's not about what I like or what you like. There should be a good variety of choices for all tastes. I also enjoy playing on some small-medium maps, but not every single day!

So, what's your point? Isn't there a good variety of maps to play? Or, do you mean that there aren't many players that play different maps and so you are "doomed" to play only a small variety, is that what you mean?

In my honest opinion, larger maps require more tactics, teamwork and strategy than smaller maps (with some people playing defence, some attacking etc.), which is really difficult to have with the basic chat that is provided by the game, and with players who you have just met on the battlefield (and might not even speak the same language). On the other hand, it is easy to take up any spot with almost any combination on smaller maps (to capture a flag in Silence or a point in Polygon, you can use any hull from Wasp to Mammoth, while you wouldn't see a Mammoth going all the way to take a flag and come back in Serpuhov).

I think this is a bigger reason why larger maps aren't played as often. They're great, it's difficult to have the tactics going.

Edit:
I also wanted to add that I think one of the main reasons that larger maps aren't played, is because as maps are hard to find, rare, and easily forgotten. We should be able to see all the battles on the servers more easily, as currently if there for example 30 battles with large maps across the 54 servers, then finding them will be difficult, and some servers will have none. All of them added together, however could make finding the battles easier, as 30 battles to choose from is a lot easier. Looking through each of the servers individually makes it impossible to keep rare maps alive. There should be one place where all the battles would be displayed. Implemented with filters, to help finding the battles more easily!

dont blame poloygon .

polygon is my favourite map

We don't blame you or the map for there being unpopular maps. Polygon is convenient in terms of fighting opponents. However, a broader area to fight can also be enjoyable.

Use this CC thing to give more XP in large maps rather than more crystals. That will attract people too.

You go talking about giving out more crystals for anything/anyway, remember those ideas are forbidden and will not be considered. It has been stated many times, in many topics.

NO CRYSTAL IDEAS.
