On-Screen controls for touch screen PCs and Windows Tablets.

Recommended Posts

So, I am using a Surface RT, which is a 2-in-1 laptop. It has touch screen feature, like most of other PCs. So, I was thinking why not to use the screen to control a tank? Many modern PCs have touch screens and it would be fun to play with them. Also, Windows tablets have built-in flash players that lets you play Tanki smoothly without having to download any special program or browser, so on-screen controls would fit them the best. I am talking about something like this:

It's not a bad idea, but touch screens don't have as much functionality as a keyboard does. You can't add as many controls through a touch screen as is needed by this game. I know you can add virtual buttons, but that will clutter up the screen and make it hard to control the tank. Also, the performance by tablets is not as good as that of laptops and PC's. I would think that the lighter version of the game which is planned as an app for mobile devices is a better option. There is a reason behind the scarcity of games like tanki on mobile devices.

Nope, you are wrong. Windows tablets have an amazing performance. For example, I play tanki on my Surface RT tablet using its connectable keyboard and I get 30-40 FPS with some graphic options.

And, an 10" screen is big enough for it. In this tablet, I have FIFA 15, which also has that kind of controls and it's pretty comfortable to play. So, if it was implemented to Tanki as well, it wouldn't cause any issues at all.

Windows tablets may give a high FPS, but how many people do you think have windows tablets? Very few. Mostly, people prefer to get iPads or android tablets. So, this would help only a very small chunk of the player base. All that developmental work for very few players. It would be better for the developers to concentrate on the app version of the game. Also, the game is going to switch to unity from flash soon. So, it would be redundant adding this feature in flash now and having to rework it in unity again.

Yes, it would not be very appealing to introduce touch screen for that side of market, its very sparse and it would not be fun, strategy games suit touch screens best

High chances are that this feature will be implemented into the Unity version of Tanki, which is still yet to come.
