Staff Interviews: Forum Moderators

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Forum moderators watch over the forum day and night taking care of off-topic messages and trolls, removing the irrelevant information and focusing our attention on important things. So if someone suddenly decides to make a mess in the forum just call a forum moderator, he or she will explain that there are rules to be followed in the forum. In this Interview, you will get to know them, and their life as a Forum Moderator.

I have asked all of them the same questions and I hope you enjoy the interview! Yellow is for the questions and Grey for the replies. Let's begin!

It's great to be able to talk to you guys today. Please tell me about yourselves and who you are.

@FederalBureauFBISame here, nice to meet you by the way :P

Most know me as FBI or simply Fed, my real name is Vasil and I live in a small, cozy town in Bulgaria. Cycling and playing football are things Ilove doing, also, I'm kind of a tech-enthusiast, I enjoy working with and trying out different kinds of devices, software, aswell as playing games - this is one of the things that brought me here, while the other is my friend who, fortunately, told me about "that game he plays in which he drives a tank, fights with other tanks and already has 500 crystals and a 1-cube rank!!"

My gaming nickname is iCarefree, formerly Peace-Keeper-99 although I get called by my real name sometimes by a few who I know quite well and play with regularly. I am 18 years old and live in England. I have many hobbies which include chess, playing the church organ, piano and of course, Tanki. I'm not a huge fan of sport but I enjoy playing table tennis and some football.

Well ... my username is Void-Walker; previously known as crashyoyoyo, many people still know me by 'crash'. My real name is Muhammad, I live somewhere in England. I enjoy sport a lot, especially football and cricket, before I knew about tanki, that's what I did. I also like deigning; map-making   and gaming on console, tanki is the only PC game I play to be honest.

I was born in Moscow, Russia and spent my first 11 years there. After that I moved to Dubai and lived here for another 8 years, studying in a British secondary school. This is how I ended up learning English. Other than that, I'm not much of an active or sporty person, but I like to travel, which is something I plan to do a lot of when I get settled in life after University. At the moment I'm finishing year 13 of school and should hopefully be doing a course in Architecture at Edinburgh University.

@falcosenna1 My in-game name is falcosenna1, but most of my friends in TO call me falco. Few of them even call me by my real name, Lorenzo. I'm a 17 years old student and I'm in my last year of secondary school. If everything goes as planned, I'll move on to the university next year to study medicine. Besides TO as a hobby, I go about 3 times a week to the gym. I simply can't live without practicing sports. The northern part of Belgium is where I live, near the border with the Netherlands, so my native language is Dutch.

Pleasure to meet you guys! Why did you apply for such a job like this?

@FederalBureauFBIThe second thing I noticed after I joined the game back in 2011 was the forum and its great community, I just loved it from the beginning, spent months in interacting with the community, found out many things I didn't know about the game, made many friends and so on. Later, I was invited to become a consultant, and after a long time working as one, at one point I decided that I want to help the game a bit more, especially on the forum, and knowing well all the members of the team and how they work, I decided to apply for a forum moderator. I got accepted as a candidate several days later (this is 2013) and started working, and here I am now :)

I loved the game so much and I wanted to get involved more with the community. When I realised what sort of work the moderators did, I thought I would give it a go and apply.

I had played this game for a very long time and I felt it was time to help the community, so I had ,originally  applied as a consultant, become a candidate, unfortunately they decided to remove them so I had later was moved to a forum moderator, which either way, I enjoy.

I felt like the English community lacked experts in gameplay and the moderation group generally wasn't big enough to manage the game effectively. I applied for chat moderation first, because I felt like my knowledge of two biggest languages in Tanki would be useful, but Ostrica told be to go to the forum, so I did.

@falcosenna1 I was helping players in the game itself and on the Forum before I became a forum moderator and I decided that I wanted to to something more. I was inspired by the professionalism and helpfulness of the forum moderators and that's why I applied. I wanted to become a part of that amazing team that keeps our forum an amusing place.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Alrighty! What do you guys like about your present job?

@FederalBureauFBI As I currently am a forum administrator, my work style and tasks have slightly changed, I'm not as active on topics as I used to be, most of the things I do now remain in the "background". But this doesn't change my opinion - the forum moderator job is an awesome experience. The feeling that you're helpful to someone, be it a newbie that doesn't know how to post screenshots, or a guy who is lazy to read a whole guide and wants a short answer directly from you, is great. So is the ability to keep things in order and clean from violators - which is our other important task.

One of the best things is working together and helping out players who need guidance on how the game works and to make their Tanki experience as fun and enjoyable as possible.

Well, I would have to say, meeting new players, now obviously you're going to meet players but as a Forum moderator I meet players that have just started the game, or players who have been playing for a very long time. Of course helping and answering questions is great.

The fact that my opinion is respected more than others', so people trust me more and I don't have to go through too much effort to prove someone wrong. Although it does become a big problem when I accidentally make a mistake or give false/outdated info. I also generally enjoy helping people solve their issues in the game.

@falcosenna1 First of all I like having responsibilities, and forum moderators have huge responsibilities. For me, it's enjoyable knowing that I'm one of the forum moderators that are responsible for the forum of a worldwide game. I also love helping people with their questions and problems. It always gives me a warm feeling when I see they're happy and thankful because I helped them. And I just like speaking with players from the English community, with players from all over the world. I had never thought that I'd learn so much about other people, about their culture, their country, their thoughts and interests. It's wonderful!

Interesting! What is life like a Forum Moderator? Do you enjoy it?

@FederalBureauFBI:  Yes, definitely. What is it like - the main things we do are answering players' questions asked in the forum, in PM, managing topics and posts (this includes editing/removal of inappropriate posts, topic titles or whole topics, which makes the forum more ordered and easier for players to use without getting confused by things like having the same topic in several places, random posts that don't contain any human-readable words, etc.) and keep the forum clean from violators - a thing I always repeat is, when you guys came here, you read and agreed to things called EULA and Game Rules, which state that if you don't follow them (95% of which are simple real-life ethics by the way), then you can't stay in the game. We're always trying to make players follow those rules, and not simply because we say so - we need to educate them, explain them what those rules exactly mean and why following them is so important.

: I know some of you may have read my topic about my Forum Moderator Life but I really enjoy this job, it's great fun. It takes up a bit of time which you need to be prepared to give up but if you get the right balance between real life and the forum then there's no problem. It's great to know that you can make a difference in such a thriving community.

: Definitely hard work, but I also enjoy it. As Forum moderators we do a various amount of work. answering

questions, PMs, Closing topics that are flooding or already exist. We do a lot of work around the Forum to make it a better place for the community.

:  I definitely enjoy it. I like reading new topics, seeing what ideas people can come up with and what discussions are going on. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I finally finish sorting through the 50-100 new topics and posts I get every day in my notification log, because I can go to sleep knowing that I leave the forum clean and pleasant to use for all members.

@falcosenna1: I really enjoy the job of forum moderator, because I like hanging out on the forum and checking the various topics. In my opinion the forum moderators really form a cozy, professional group of enthusiastic, hardworking volunteers. It's always fun talking with my colleagues. Checking the forum is a daily activity for me and I really love it. I don't only go to the forum because it's my job, but ,most of all ,because it's a fun place to spend some of my spare time. I indeed can't play as many battles as I did before I got accepted, but the forum is equally pleasant for me.

Great! Have any last words for the audience?

@FederalBureauFBI: I'll be short here. As the other guys said - if you have dreams, do everything it takes to complete them. There will of course be fails and problems on the way, but you mustn't stop fighting. Good luck!

: I hear some younger players have parents that are against computer games, I have to say they're wrong. Games like Tanki are fun, they give players something to talk about with their friends, they're totally worth it. Just get the right balance between Tanki and real life but most importantly, enjoy yourself! :)

:  *waves* Have fun playing the game, follow your dreams; what you want most in life, live up to it.

: Have fun, be safe and try to avoid breaking rules   ;)

@falcosenna1: As final words I'd like to say two things. The first one is that you should never give up. It's like you get two choices every day. You can stay in your bed and keep dreaming, or you can get up and chase your dreams. As an optimistic type of person, I believe that all of your dreams are reachable. The second thing is more addressed to the younger players. Having fun is important of course, but building up a beautiful future is even more important. First focus on school and play games afterwards.
