Your thoughts on today's sciences.

Dear friends, fellow players,

I have been around these forums for quite a while now. I have seen players come and go, as well as myself.
What kept me from leaving were friends I have made in the years, what made me leave was mostly the lack of a good conversation and understanding.
With this topic my goal is to achieve a slightly higher level of intellect, I hope many of you will be with me.
I'm hoping to obtain different views on these day's science accomplishments, discoveries and inventions. It is a thing I'm very interested in and I hope many other are too.

My intention is to review a new subject each week, which will be featured and summarized in this first post.
I will try to provide a personal question or statement with this information, so there will be something to discuss.

Let's see if this is something the community likes!

We will be discussing any science-related subject brought up by players from now on.

And, since this is a pilot thread:
Q: Do you like this concept? Why, or why not? What would you like to change?
Q: What subject would you like to see featured next? (provide links if possible)

Feel free to give feedback.

Hoverboards?!

Hoverboards as for example seen in movies such as "Back to the Future" are becoming reality. The idea of a hoverboard is a flying skateboard without wheels, which seems to still be quite broad of an understanding.
The current record for the longest hoverboard-travel has been registred by the Guiness Book of World Records, a Canadian inventor has traveled a distance of 275.9 meters by hoverboard on a lake. The Canadian's hoverboard was based upon a dronelike propellor-design.
Recently, Lexus has revealed a hoverboard creation (check out the video) that is much sleeker in design than that of the Canadian. Embedded into the levitating board are liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, which means the hoverboard can only be used on surfaces with a metal veneer.
Unfortunately, none of the hoverboards are yet commercially available.

-----

It seems awesome to me to be able to 'fly' above a surface, almost unreal actually. Although I'm not a skater myself, if either one of the hoverboards were commercially available for a decent price, I think that I would buy one. However, since using the hoverboard is probably unlike any other 'vehicle', if that's what you can call it, it would probably take me ages to learn how to. Also, I don't think the typical old lady would be able to handle a flying, rather bouncy, board.

Question: Do you think hoverboards will be replacing bicycles in the near future? Why, or why not?
(Statement: hoverboards will replace bicycles in the near future.)

Question: Would you buy a hoverboard yourself? Why, or why not?

(Statement: I would buy a hoverboard.)

yup if the hoverboard becomes available commercialy then it would not be replaced with only bicycles but motorbikes, skateboards, and who knows cars maybe and many people will travel to work by a hoverboard. :) pretty cool huh.

To be honest I just want technology to stay as it is right now when I reach 30 years of age. We don't need hoverboards. Legs muscles are there to be used. :D

I could never use a hoverboard, I'd be a liability to anyone on the road/sidewalk/general vicinity. And besides, Kev is right, these legs were made for walkin', and tat's just what they'll do...

However, anyone game for moon colonization?

^^^Although I don't really like hoverboards that much, the logic that legs were made for walking and not for using hoverboards is flawed. If that logic were to be applied, there would never be any progress. Man started out as a nomad. Technically, our arms and legs weren't meant to drive cars. Nor were they meant to operate any machinery or any piece of technology. Sure, the initial purpose of our legs was locomotion, but we can't stay limited to it. That's the unique thing about humans: we partially control the way we evolve; maybe not physically but in our lifestyle. Change is inevitable. I agree that there will be cons about hoverboards, but cons exist about just about everything in the world. It's just about making sure that the negative aspects of it don't outweigh the positive. When that happens, then it's time for change.

Yes! It seems quite weird to me that we are about to colonize Mars before the moon! O.O

Despite that, I'm a great fan of the idea, it'll be just like Star Trek. ;D

If I would want to be one of the colonists? Not yet, there's still much to learn and to be discovered.

So Kevred, I assume you are not in for moon colonization? And don't you think we will NEED the technology to supply the demands of billions of more people yet to come? This technology includes colonization of more 'space' IMO. :P

With the growing pop., more countries will follow the example of countries such as China, and establish a limit of # of babies per household. And moon colonization?! That'll never happen in a short 50 years.

and if that doesn't work, we always have bombs and big pew pews

Actually, you've got a point there. (not that you were trying to make a point :D )

Convo clubs do include discussion clubs :l

How about invisibility cloaks?

from research I gathered they are being developed.

As in Star Trek? ;D

Well in those series it has only proven to be used in bad ways. I don't think it will be good for society.

Less privacy etc.

I'm quite impressed that there is actually being worked on.

here are 6 things i think its scientifically impossible to do:

1.travelling at or faster than speed of light.

2. explain why does magnet attract/repel things. are its atoms special or what? (not sure if its explained or not)

3. explain how conciousness originate and works

4. explain why we feel pain.

5. explain how universe was created. how big bang was created (if that theory is 100% right)

6. proove or disprove if god exists or not

I don't think that you'll be able to answer those questions.

However, these are questions that occupy a great deal of scientists. I'd love to hear your suggestions BlitzPanzer12345.

Nice topic.

I'm hoping to obtain different views on these day's science accomplishments, discoveries and inventions. It is a thing I'm very interested in and I hope many other are too.

War is the most powerful force for the advancement of science and technology , i can't find any great achievement in science or technology in the past 70 yrs that was not a direct result of the R&D that happened during WW2.

Question: Do you think hoverboards will be replacing bicycles in the near future? Why, or why not?
(Statement: hoverboards will replace bicycles in the near future.)

For that to happen two things must occur first , small batteries with big storage capacity and cheap energy.

Scientists are having a hard time reducing battery size ,charge time and there sizes are not going to be reduced as

Long as we don't have a major war ,since reducing the size of batteries would require massive

Capital investments, something that is not available to the private sector in peace time. as for cheap

Energy , well we will have to wait for space solar stations and wireless electricity to reach that point.

Question: Would you buy a hoverboard yourself? Why, or why not?

(Statement: I would buy a hoverboard.)

No , motorcycles are dangerous enough , hover-boards look even more dangerous!

So you are impliying that we should have a war to fast-forward technological progress... interesting...

I can't deny that WW1 and WW2 delivered many new inventions, but I must point out the costs were high (millions of humans).
