Your schools National curriculum or something more?

Hello Tankers :)

I thought about this topic for a while & decided to write it at last as it`s a subject that i feel needs greater attention in schools & at the education authorities.

Whilst of course it`s vital that the national curriculum is followed

& subjects like english, maths, history, geography, the sciences are taught i feel that some subjects are not going to benefit the students for the future or maybe that the students don`t have the choices thye really would like & feel

what is the point as they have no real interest in the current choices available & possibly that`s the reason why many fail or simple cant be bothered as what they really would like to do is not on the curriculum.

Obviously the basic subjects are fundamentally important like maths/english but are the rest really going to prepare you for your future & pave the way for the rest of your life?

So tell me what are the subjects in your school?  could the choices be more widespread to cater for the growing number of different students that require something better? & if so which subjects would of given you more interest in school apart from the standard ones?

Also do you agree that education should be left just for the schools or should parents help prepare their children for when the time comes to enter mainstream education?

Finally Do you think that morals & values, good manners, politeness etc. should be a part of learning in school for for when the student leaves to enter the big wide world or is that the job for the parents to teach only as obviously teachers cant be be responsible for the way some children are when they start school.

PS do you think homework should be a necessity after being at school all day or should learning be left at the gates when you leave?

Lots to digest i know but do you best & lets see how this develops :)

Have a great day & weekend tankers what ever you may do ^_^

Did i forget to mention

PLEASE KEEP THE CHAT FRIENDLY AT ALL TIMES NO INSULTS ;)

I just hate that mentality - "Don't study the subjects you don't need". All subjects should be taught at schools and students shouldn't be able to choose them. And yes, homework is important. You have to work on yourself to learn.

I can't really say… I'm in a special school at the moment, where I'm completing 2 years in one. There, my teachers just teach me all subjects that will be needed to pass the last level diploma.

That's what exercises are for, I believe. School takes already a lot of time, and students shouldn't be given homeworks, in my honest opinion. Look, 80% of children's typical day is like this- Wake up, go to school, go back home, work for school, sleep, wake up… During weekend, teachers give bigger homeworks, and during holidays too. Is that normal? Should a child's life be devoted entirely to school? No. There are other things a child should learn, that can not be taught at school. Children need time for them, which they don't have. School start early, and teachers yell at students because they are too tired. A simple solution to that- Make school start at 10:00 am, remove homeworks, and make school end at 17:30-18:00. That way, they will be able to sleep more, and by removing the homework, let them time during the weekend to devote some of their time to other activities.

the next time i meet you IRL you wont be alive :D

seriously, study in my country and you will understand...

having to read really tough subjects such as sanskrit (not now, but it used to), hindi and history/civics till 10th and then also a hell of competetion among millions is just too much. if we had to study all subjects till graduating competeting millions i would just suicide. however it doesnt imply for some countries. in india you cant study less than 15 hours to get a job as engineer. hundreds of people get over 85% marks in engineering but only people with over 93-95% get any job. thats just the basic requirement for any company out here. so u can think that there are only 3 subjects, need to study at least 15-18 hours and even then theres only a slight chance to get a good job. if we need to study all the subjects instead of 3 then it will be nearly impossible and people wont invest time and money in education at all and the country wont progress.

i agree with sirogo. these days children (like me) hardly do other activities. either they are busy doing homework or they keep playing video games. there shouldnt be any homework. instead they could simply adjust and increase a bit of school timings.

plus its even worse in india as according to latest education policy. it is that every month there are unit tests and half yearly and annual exams. each month we need to give 2 useless projects per subject (that is 12) + 1 exam in which the course is 1/3 of half yearly and yearly exams. and we must submit them by time as thier marks are added to main results.

now see my routine (as of 9th grade) --> 7.5 hours of school+2 hours extra study (mostly maths)+ 1-3 hours homework and completing notes etc+ 1-2 hours for project almost everyday+ 1-2 hours for revisions for unit tests= no time for play. (i need to study that much cause i am not much good in studies)

Wow, I disagree. In the UK, during your third year you decide which subjects you'd like to drop for next year (aside from the compulsory Maths, English and Science). The rules vary by school, however generally no matter what you pick in some way you'll still be doing a language, some non academic subject and History/Geography/Religion/Philosophy. You further refine your subjects two years later. Honestly, I think this is good as it means you don't waste your time with subjects you don't care about, or those you don't think you'll need. If you don't pay attention in these subjects already, you're not going to learn; being forced to do subjects you hate for too long will also affect your general mentality towards school. The time you would've spent learning those other subjects is spent more effectively on what you do enjoy, allowing you to delve into better detail and discover your strengths. By the time you reach age 16, you'll know what works for you, potential careers, even - whereas learning everything may leave you quite confused, although more knowledgeable generally. In addition, I feel choosing your subjects really illustrates you have a passion for them - you'll no longer be bothered by subjects you don't like, so you can excel even further.

This^.

There are no subjects you won't need. What if your child asks you a question or needs your help with his/her homework and you fail to help?

- Dad, what's a mole?

- Ugh no idea. I studied Literature and threw away everything I didn't need.

I agree with Meliora. As a farmer that has only ever been to 3 different countries and only has intentions on travelling between 3 different countries, how is French going to help me?
