The average person types between 38 and 40 words per minute -- between 190 and 200 characters per minute.

Many people type using only some fingers, some even looking at the keyboard.

 

Other people type using the professional way called 'Touch Typing', where one uses all their fingers on the keyboard and usually doesn't look at the screen. Some good training and practice is needed to type with all your fingers though!
